These are Mummers. The painted faces represent masks, meant to disguise. These days, Mummer dances and plays are a mash-up of Pagan rites, Medieval writings and 18th Century traditions. Morris dancing is often part of a Mummer Play or performed alongside, sometimes blurring the boundaries.
