This track is ace and excellent in billions of ways, and it is better than the dreaded track the mule on the album machine head and fireball. This track is so cool, and wicked in billions of ways. I also think this album is super and cool, in billions of ways and I will always listen to this track.
Great song! I had a very early Deep Purple 8-track in my old Pontiac LeMans years back, and this song always felt right here in Seattle where the rainy days were plenty. This song could have been more of a radio hit here in the States, but the lyrics may have been too soft. Ah well I still love it. LP
@soyounoat - Soft and out of tune vocals are the producer's fault - they apparently hadn't spent much time rehearsing this or it would have been immediately obvious that dropping the key would have allowed for the top vocal to sing it full-voice, thus adding strength to the harmonies. Too bad, because it's a great song.
Sorry - soft wasn't the right word... I didn't mean volume-soft.. Soft as in a bit syrupy - cliche. Since it was the mid-'60s, I suppose this wasn't unusual. I still love the song on a gut level, and I believe it could have been a hit if everything went just right...
@soyounoat - Hi! No, I meant 'soft' in the same context as you. Had it been sung full-voice, it would have been stronger overall, and that typically lends itself to being in tune. These guys weren't professional singers, and the producer should have found a way around that, in my opinion. That said, as with many groups and songs of the 60's, being out of tune wasn't enough to foul a good song, hey? You're right - in the right hands at the console, Rainy Day could have been a hit.
@soyounoat - Another example of this same kind of mistake with a FABULOUS song is "Anthem" off of 'Book of Taliesyn.' A stunningly haunting, beautiful song vocally compromised by the falsetto voice on top, completely out o context with the other vocals in the stack.
I've never gotten over how thick and kick ass of a bass sound Nick Simper always got out of his bass. Even with the Flowerpot Men, pre-Deep Purple. Killer cool!
One of the best songs off Shades of Deep Purple.

I love Mrk1 Purple . The test of time looks better for Mrk1 than Mrk2. What a great band!

What a stupid assed comment..only true Purple fans remember Mark 1..everyone knows Mark 2 if only for Smoke..and Black Night.

Seem fine to me. Except one line "new day, a day with you" should be "new world, a world with you"?
sudhavishwanath 3 years ago
.I agree with bluesishere should be...it looks like the world being born...not " the worlds been born "
Your correction..I agree with too.
