The designers of Nicktoons Hoverzone and similar games must have played Quazzatron when they were kids. The design of the worlds and the hovering characters definitely show an influence.
This game was - and still is - brilliant. What I loved most about it was the freedom to go to whichever level and grapple whichever robot you wanted. The choice was yours. The game didn't push you in any particular direction. You could work your way up or take your chances with the scary low numbered robots from the outset. It was all up to you, right down to choosing which side you wanted when grappling. And the music was superb. Think I spent most of 86 playing this...time well spent!
Lovely game. I was envious of Paradroid, never knew before now there was a link with the development staff, between the two games. Use of game mechanics etc..
You never ever forget the Vritt~~ Vritt~~ and white screen flash of the Disruptor. A teeth clenching moment as you entered the higher levels..
@patongpanda The Disruptor is an 'off contact' weapon you encounter as you move deeper into the robot city. Basically, try and grapple a robot (any robot still standing..) on a Disruptor level as quick as you can, the fact that it is still alive means that it probably has a 'Disruptor Shield'.
Still amazed that all these great Spectrum games fitted into.. 48KB.
I absolutely loved this game. Upgrading your bot was really satisfying.
There was a 2d overhead game that used similar mechanics where you played a wizard that had been turned into a frog. You had magic battles with the enemies a bit like the grappling in quazatron. It was called ran-a-rama i think and it was great fun.
rikaitch , is lying BIGTIME.. he's good at that.. and sadly never learns.. I spoke to Steve Turner (from graftgold) about this, to contact him.. he found it rather amusing how he's such a delusional "walter mitty" quoting HIS words.. Rik was 13 apparently when he wrote this..lol... Matthew Smith was 17 when he wrote manic miner.. if Rik is SO good why are their no credits for other games on world of spectrum for "rick hughs" .. not "richard hughs"..lol.. I do hate people who lie so badly.
That's a pretty cool claim to fame. 13 years old?? I've just worked out how much you could have made! I really loved this game which is why i looked it up. Have you written anything since that we might have played? Is there a version I can download anywhere? I'll send you the 50p asking price??
I'm curious - your username is "rikaitch", suggesting your name is Richard H. ...this game was actually written by Andrew Braybrook (who went on to form the Graftgold software company).
he's what is commonly known as a liar John sadly.. I spoke to Steve Turner about it.. I think it's lame such an idiot takes credit for someone elses work.. notice how matty smith was 17 when he coded manic miner.. notice how Rik apparently was an amazing coder, yet no credits on W.O.S etc. (he's not the richard hughes from DI either) . he's only good at talking s*** and he seems to like the attention, which is even funnier.
This is a great spectrum game, & it's better than paradroid, because it's got isometric 3D graphics. I only ever completed it once & it took a long time. You need the disruptor shields for tghe lower levels & the desintigrator's the best weapon, but uses up tons of energy.
This was one of my favourite games on the Spectrum. I never completed it but it always kept me comng back for more. Particularly liked the jump to the grapple screen which gave it an interesting depth. Thanks for the post.
This game Quazatron I seriously recommend - it is fantastic - it has immense depth - i cant recommend it enough if you have a 48k spectrum or a spectrum emulator
I just gotta thank you for this upload nobody i've ever met has played it and i was totally addicted way back ('85 perhaps) the idea seems just as playable as ever . If i remember rightly the lower the number and lower the letter (a-1,x-24) the tougher the robot to beat in a grapple thats why the L-5 was way out of your league ,thanks again i feel 12 once more
This game was amazing. When I got the disruptor dudes I used to pwn!!!!

@TattiePeeler This has haunted me all my life. The Disruptor you say? Where is it and how do I defend against it?

There is an amazing PC version available from Retrospec. I just wish it had a save game feature because it's hard as hell. BTW it's free!

Lovely game. I only played Magnetron, but it's very similar to Quazatron, (scenery, isometric engine, monsters and the main character :))
