@alternatehistories I don't think it would be that big of a difference. Maybe if you put the entire newspaper over it, that would somewhat act like tamping it, and the crater would be a little bigger. Nevertheless, just a stick of dynamite on the ground with nothing over it would still make a crater.
that was a great test video and it does look like the vod is higher than annm. Maybe you are just getting a more complete detonation with the al and you need a booster to fully detonate the annm. You are probably right. The reason that velocity is so important in shaped charges is related to the kinetic energy equation k=(1/2)MV^2 so the velocity is exponential compared to the mass, this is why even a 20 percent change in vod can crate a 100% more effective charge.
In my opinion the problem was the cup, it is a conical cup and not cylindrical, you made a shaped charge with two cones. Try a PVC pipe with the glass and you will see it working. Anyway, nice detonation.
That's interesting. I couldn't tell, was there any cavitation spots at all? I also couldn't tell if the cone and standoff were the same as the other glass SC. I would have expected some type of cavitation if the setup was the same other than the confinement. A SC will work with minimal confinement with the right setup but the effect will be somewhat lessened. All though I have to admit that I have never used ANNMAL on any SC, so it's possible that the VOD just isn't high enough. Nice test anyway
Yes, there were cavitation spots, but not in the direct center underneath; kinda off to the side a little. Also, the standoff distance was more on this one because the diameter of the cone touching the explosive was greater. That's why I used the cup, to get a lager area of the cone covered by explosive. But your'e probably right about the VOD.
that should have worked. you really dont need a strong conical wall. try it with a faster vod explosive and it sould work fine. I have only experimented with thin paper or plastic tubes and they work fine but i use EGDN and PETN. They have about twice the vod of ANNMAI.
ok so i dont know the vod of ANNMAI but I estimated it by extrapolating data from similar explosives. For example ANAL ha a vod of 2700-3000 and ANFO has 3500-4000. Also ANNM has a vod of 6000, so i would expect, using the same proportions, the aluminum added to the ANNM would bring it back to the ANFO range (maby a little higher)

About the VOD that decrease the performace of conical shaped charge, maybe the ANNM+H2SO4 is perfect for good result without strong confinement...
however, are still skeptical is such the reason, I will convinced when I will make the test in person with ANFO+AL melted in a steel jar (very thin).
