I used to live in the same building as the local arcade, and I used to stand and watch people play this awesome game for hours. At the time, as Slap Fight was new in the arcade, I thought ''There is no better game than this. It is fantastic!'' By then I had already seen Salamander/Nemesis, and others.
One big mystery though is the stairs leading down to the underground, right at the first stage. I've tried to bomb it, shoot it, but nothing seems to happen. What is this cellar right in the middle of the caslte's garden? I've always thought it would mean something.
Also, I'd like to mention some of the interesting bonuses you may discover as you play using different weapons.
Using the 'laser' you can make plants grow. There are occasional small weeds sticking out from the ground, shoot it with the laser and see what happens.
Using the bombs you can blow large holes in the ground. From some of these there will grow weeds.
Using missiles, at certain places they hit tiles in the ground that flip over and you can then shoot what is inside.
You don't actually need to dodge bullets to start over with max missiles. You can just leave the ship to die at the start, and you'll get the max missiles.
The most optimal way to play this game for score, is to never use 'wing' as these make your ship larger, thus you are an easier target. I always used to take maybe three 'speed', a 'side', and then 'missile', and keep it that way and only collect the 'shields' as you loop around the weapons array. I used to get a few million pts like this.
i rembemer one play cost 1 Schilling (in Austria) and i played hours with this 1 Coin... *hehehe* becouse if you finished it... it would start again from the beginning *hihihi*
Oh my God! Thank you God! I found the game that I once played 20 years ago on a ship cruise. I only remember the star, the wings and it's vertical scrolling. I found it by going through the game list of mame 0.76, which has 2000 games I guess? Fortunately it starts with an "A" as Alcon.
This is a good game. I played it in a movie theater and never forgot it.

The Genesis version of this goes for insane prices, well out of my pricing range (the gam goes for over $150 bucks).
