It depends what you're expecting. If mushroom clouds go off and you're still alive or if there's a horrible disease going around (but some bugs have an incubation period), sure there may be enough time to break out the mask and put the filter on. But if you're in a situation like living next to a Union Carbide plant (if you remember the Bhopal incident), then I'd have the filter already on. A surprise terrorist attack? Chances are you're already exposed unless you see people writhing outside.

Easier to put it on when the mask isn't on. But if there are hazards, you have no choice but to keep the mask on upon changing filters--you can also have a combat buddy do it for you avoid fumbling around. Get to a safe area if you can, hold your breath, the exhale valve will close, swap filter, and exhale.

In a battlefield, filter should already be on the mask. Same goes but not exactly necessary if you're expecting an attack or accident anytime (but filter's life will shorten). Seconds count.

I used this gas mask when I served in the Finnish Air Force. It's one of the best there is! Just one thing - DON'T LET THE FILTER TO GET WET! I remember our platoon was once wading across a creek (the enemy had supposedly blown the bridge). Couple of days after that we had our gas mask training in a tear gas tent and most of my platoon mates had to leave the tent because their filters had been ruined. Luckily I had a brand new filter that was still in its plastic bag when we crossed that creek!

Depending on the filter canister...the one shown in the video filtrates warfare gases and fallout particles. It will filtrate smoke...however, it will not scrub the carbon monoxide before entering your lungs. Most users will get the false sense of security that since the filter filtrates the smoke...that it will also filtrate the carbon monoxide. I can go on and on about the effectiveness and correct usage...but that would take up too much space.

Just a random tip i thought of, if you wear glasses and put these on, if you have a spair pair of glasses you could tape them to the inside or outside of the mask. Not ideal i know, but alot better than not being able to see at all.

The M40 is harder to clear than the M95...but with proper instruction it can be cleared and sealed proficiently. You should be fine with this mask. However, please DO NOT use any C2 canisters. You can use the C2A1 canisters safely if the expiration date has not passed. I recommend purchasing a NBC Rated canteen with NBC cap adapter...or even better...a CamelBak or Blackhawk hydration bladder. Hydration is CRITICAL! Another option is a P100 half-face respirator which would work perfectly.

It all depends on what type of challenge the filter has been exposed to. If it is a tear gas...the filter will filtrate until clogged. In other words...drawing air through the filter elements can no longer be achieved. Biological agents can be filtrated until filter is clogged as well. Chemical warfare and TIC agents depending on their concentration is from 15 minutes HIGH (BLOOD AGENT) to 8 hours low dosage mustard/nerve. It also depends on humidity levels and respiratory rates...

You should be able to find current lot dates for around $29.99 to $65.00 each. Older but still not expired filters run about $19.99 to $29.99 each. You have to spend more...to get more/better protection. Like I tell my students...If you use a $2.00 filter on a $300.00 mask...you just wasted $302.00!

The optical insert frames should run around $15.00...then you will need to take them to your eye doctor to have the optics inserted.

In regards to paint balling...the mask is tuff enough and the optical inserts go inside the mask and are fully adjustable forward and backward.

That looks exactly like the mask I has when I was in compulsory Finnish army service, as far as to the green parts inside, except the air-release valve over here has a half-dome over it, and the air filter is totally black (red is not good in war ^^). Someone said it's designed in Finland, which I'm not sure about at all. Oops I hope I haven't spread any army secrets hehe. We tested for leaks in a tent filled with tear gas... I know, this country is a bit weird =). Or then just my instructors...

Tear gas is standard in army training.

The uk uses a similar system.

I have never been in the army but herd a similar story from a uk sitisan who was in the reserve.

You are correct! This mask was made by the Finnish military prior to being bought out by SCOTT Oy. Last I knew it was still being manufactured in Finland at the same plant and shipped to America and else where.

The half dome was utilized during cold weather functions.  It directed the moist air being exhaled AWAY from the user and their clothing.

If there was a gas attack you'd have to put the mask really quickly before you were overcome by by it. There useless on there own without the protective clothing because nerve gas can penetrate ordinary clothing.

True but depends what kind of gas. For an irritant like teargas you'd obviously only need the mask, and even for heavierr stuff like mustard or chlorine gas,you would still only need the mask...but there are gases out there developed to corrode skin,eyes,even bone(eg VX gas,the effects of which were demonstrated and rather exaggerated in that film The Rock).

In the marine cadets we were taught a buddy-buddy system where 2 guys helped each other into NBC suits in 75 seconds or you were "dead".

Yes it would...the lens pieces are made of ballistic material and the Halo butyl rubber holds its shape and will actually absorb the impact of paint ball rounds. This mask is designed for use on a CBRN battlefield. Can you imagine the fear factor this mask presents?
