I know nothing about ice skating, so here is my question : Is the triple Axel a very special jump? Why is it so amazing? I would love for someone to explain :)

@mewantspocky The 3axel is considered the toughest jump in the triple jumps level. To this day many top men have trouble with it. For a lady from the early 90s to perform the triple axel consistently is an amazing feat in itself, but Midori owns the jump because as expert Sandra Bezic commented, "Watch how high she gets, the height, the flow, big speed etc..." The triple axel is a tough jump but Midori makes a tough jump look so easy and that's why it is so special and why Midori is so special.

@mewantspocky It is so amazing because she is the first woman in the history of figure skating to perform a 3A in a competition. Not in this one but in 1989. The triple Axel is different from any other triple jump because it is 3 and 1/2 rotations, not only 3, like the other triples. And she performs is better than many men. Amazing is the fact that she gets that high and she is only 4 foot 8.

Hey, regarding the song that we all seem to really love. Apparently, based on some internet browsing, I came upon an interview (in Japanese), and Ito said that she was a huge fan of Japan X, and had been "dying to do a skate with their music" for years. Not only is she a prodigal athlete, but she has damn good taste in music. Really avant guard compared to the typical classical numbers that (let's face it), we've seen skated a billion times.

I remember watching this at the time. As the commentator said, "It's just SO NICE to have her back."!!!! She had this incredibly shy, modest personality, and yet she got out there and just had this power; it was incredible. Such a great contrast; a sensitive soul with incredible athletic power. the last competition Midori competed under amateur rank was at the1992 Olympics in Albertvile in France where she finished 2nd to Kristi Yamaguchi.

Midori landed a 3axel after 3:00 mark in the free skate after missing the opening 3axel, beame the 1st female skater ever to land the 3axel in the Olympics.

Midori retired soon after.

this is the 1993 Pro Worlds Championship where Midori landed one of the Finest 3Axel Jump ever!!!

Yes, Midori was re-instated as an amateur status in June 1995 with very strong urging by JSF( NOT by Midor's choice as I understand). but a little over a year later, on Nov. 29th 1996, Midori announced her retirement.

In 15years we have not seen anyone like her yet. Mao'3Axel is light and quick while Midori's is powerful with lots of speed and huge coverage. I see a breathtaking beauty in both jumps just in a different way. Midori is a legend. Mao will be a legend.

I don't think Midori wanted to go through that kind of pressure again. It wasn't worth it, gold or no gold. Her time in Albertville was probably the hardest and most joyless time in her life and her performances reflected that. The Japanese media's constant attention was too much for a shy, sensitive soul like Midori. And the pressure to succeed from Japan itself was simply too much. Considering all this I can't say that I blame her.

What is even more amazing, all the jumps were landed perfectly, the free leg clearing the ice easily. The flow into the triple jumps, the triple axel was amazing, but the triple lutz was just a thing of beauty, perfectly rotated, no hesitation going into it, just a textbook performance.
