I was at a guitar convention this year, and they had other instruments for sale and on display too...and although I'm a guitar player the highlight for me was a certified keyboard of Ray Manzarek's from the Doors period. It looked EXACTLY like the one he's playing here...and I just looked at it and thought..."man, if that thing could talk it would have some wild stories to tell." I wanted to whisper to it: "Tell me about Jim." Anyway, some fans of this might like "Rosetta West - Low."
Metcalf is a band formed and inspired by Providence, RI... they play hard and meaningful music, so unique it has no genre. Mesmerizing, seething, angry lyrics, bleeding blues riff, and original rhythms create a new urban poetry. They bill themselves not just as a band, but as an entity... known as "The Calf".
It can not be denied after watching the moshing crowd and band come to a screeching halt together mid song to share some of the band's more iconic lyrics. A high tolerance to whiskey, cigarettes, and a tell-it-like-it-is attitude seem to be the only requirements. I hope for the world's sake, its ready... Metcalf is here for a revolution.
A truely "deep" song or piece in work has meaning on many levels [obviously]. So it's probably about a number of things, but for me, it's about revolting against an insane system revovling around limitless greed. "Your ballroom days are numbered."
This song isn't about heroin or Vietnam. It's about the baby boom generation out numbering their parents generation and how they could take over if they wanted. We did not out number Vietcong soldiers and the heroin thing is false.
This song makes me wanna stand in a huge group of people and shout THEY GOT THE GUNS BUT WE GOT THE NUMBERS COME ON BABY WE ARE TAKING OVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim Morrison is dead...has been since 1970, or did you not read Danny Sugarman's book, NO ONE HERE GETS OUT ALIVE, a fairly well written expose on some of the man's antics, when he was with THE DOORS? If you have problems with the parallel nature of his existence I suggest some kind of PSYCHO THERAPY......GROW UP....WE DID...in PERRIS, CALIFORNIA
A song with many facets. 5 to 1 one in 5, the hand of Man, the body of Man, a reference to SATANISM, and WITCHCRAFT, the PENTAGRAM, the PENTAGON, the FLOWER CHILD caught up in the politics of the TIMES, WAR raging in body and soul, searching for a true release from the ENDLESS SAMSARA, the MAYA that keeps the ARTIST coming back, only to find the same things, the same angst, the same lovers, the same haters. the same obstacles.
This song is one of favorites of all the Doors songs.. I actually cover it when performing.. THe song is about the darker side of the sixties, having lived in that time > He talks about the flower children,, (You walk across the floor with your flower in your hand, tryin to tell me no one understands ) Your balroom days are over baby.. ( the beauty of the sixties is over and now the dark days are aheadY 0 Night is growing near, shadows of the eve. crawl across the years.Summer of love is over
@jmarshmellowman come on baby go on home and wait for me and i be home in just a little while. ; you see i got to go out in this car .to see this guy.. after that cant make it out too soft..the vocals.. But the song is an anti flower children song.. Their were two sides to the sixties there was the beautiful side of love and peace and the flower children but there was also the dark side /. the vietnam war which was one of the most senseles wars . lots of protests of war, and segregation,..
music actually seemed to mean something then - it had the power to scare governments and make people think and maybe challenge the powers that be, but in a positive way. Now the powers that be run the music industry
BUT I'LL BE BACK IN JUST A LITTLE WHILE! Hurry Lizard King, we need you! Get a move on and shake those pickled bones out of the grave. Walk up to the Teaparty and say "No."
@ADent96 Just like real life, the idiots. Not only do they not like Jim Morrison, they're trying to kill us all with their heretical Libertarianism. I wish Jim would rise from the dead and sweep them all to Hell with a broom.
When comparing the generic pop music of our generation to the rock n'roll of the 1960s, just keep one thing in mind. One cannot lead a revolution singing "Baby" by Justin Bieber.
THE OLD GET OLDER AND THE YOUNG GET STRONGER, MAY TAKE A YEAR OR IT MAY TAKE LONGER. THEY GOT THE GUNS BUT WE GOT THE FUCKING NUMBERS, WE GONNA WIN YEAHHHHHH WE TAKING OVER... BETTER WATCH YOU YOU FAT CATS SOME OF US ARE AWAKE
Me gustó al instante, al igual que "When the music is over". No sabía que se llama "Five to one".
Me encanta la parte que Jim dice "Get together one more time".
@MrBucket08 have you read his book? or the recent High Times w/ Robby Krieger? Densmore slammed the whole band....consistently for years. That's why Krieger and Manzarek won't play with him still.
Aw, c'mon, hunneh. One of the most devastating Punk Rock songs ever written. Grim, terrifying. A masterpiece. I sang this last night at karaoke. A lot of people dug it, but many were scared. Gonna win, yeah, we're....takin over! COME AON! When he says "I'll be back in a little while!", it sounds like he's going to rise from the dead. And he just might! I wouldn't put it past him! Jim is the Lizard King, the Supreme Poet of Rock 'n Roll. We will never see his like again.
@Alexandernero666 Come on man, the Doors' music is about fun and acceptance of the odd and different, and I'm pretty sure Jim was thinking about every form of retaliation to authoritarian control... he was probably smiling looking down upon the chaos in Egypt...
@Alexandernero666 Uh, maybe not, but it fits like a glove. What's this, you're offended by Egypt because a black man, Barack Obama, is on their side? How crazy are you conservatives? I speak for all Democrats when I say "They've got the guns, but we've got the numbers1 Gonna win, yeah, we're.....TAKIN OVER! COME AON!" So what if you've got the guns (assault rifles, etc.)? You can take all your nasty guns with you to Argentina when you and your billionaires are booted out of here in a few years.
Egypt will just become what it is; a bunch of religous nuts that will kill your dumb hippie asses the first chance they get. Try traveling instead of CNN and Fox for your canned perspectives. If you had the balls and passion you would have caught the first flight over to help.
@Tarten46 So, you're well-travelled but will still generalize an entire country. Nice. Sounds like you learned a whole lot. I should assume this message is being sent to you in the trenches huh?
@diplomatiks I used to break rank and go check out the local culture on my own. I freely moved thru areas where later in the week western types were kidnapped and beheaded. My step father is from Lebanon. My step sister pretty much grew up in Saudi. Been awhile since Ive been in the trenches. I'm generalizing the entire region.
It's about youth revolt againts old generations (at the time, there were 5 times more young individuals than old ones) and, of course, 'old' ideas, as the Viet-Nâm war at the time.
I feel like all the live shows I've heard from Britain are a lot less full of feeling than their other live shows... this one actually almost sounds like a studio version :/
@paniuroczy feel the pendulum swing but know who owns the clock your struggles and all humanitys are not over but mearly beginning :( this song does rock though :) fuck agenda 21
@ulvyRasheeeeed you obviously don't know how the world and how life freakin' works because every great country had to go through hell and turmoil to become so great. what are the egyptians supposed to do, sit there and take the abuse? or take risks and demand their rights? egypt was completely abandoned by the government, people were killed by gov't. my grandfather was in the egyptian parliament I think I'd know more shit than you so back the fuck off.
howdy, my name is tom. 57 yrs. when i was about 13 i went to a doors concert in portland ore. with a friend. it was all new to me. and the only song i remember is this one. don't think i have heard it since. what happened was that it turned into a slow motion riot. the crowd was surging ahead and there was a line of police in front of the stage. mr. morrison sat with his legs over the front of the stage and kept urging them forward. i do not remember the ending. and i was facinated
@tomosoos ahhhh, cool to have a story from someone who got to see them live, Jim died 9 years befor i was born so its safe to say i missed my window ;p
"They got the guns, but we got the numbers". This prophecy is about to come true very soon. "They" today is the big big banking system, they do indeed have all the guns. But we have the numbers. People are uniting to crush them and we can, with one very simple and peaceful solution. Withdraw your money from a big bank on december 7th.
Looking at the "likes bar" I feel confident to say that we do indeed have the numbers. Thank you Jim Morrison =)

@WilliBond0007 I think that's a satyrical remark to the hippies:

Shadows of the Evening crawl across the years
You walk across the floor with a flower in your hand
Tryin' to tell me no one understands..."

howdy, my name is tom. 57 yrs. when i was about 13 i went to a doors concert in portland ore. with a friend. it was all new to me. and the only song i remember is this one. don't think i have heard it since. what happened was that it turned into a slow motion riot. the crowd was surging ahead and there was a line of police in front of the stage. mr. morrison sat with his legs over the front of the stage and kept urging them forward. i do not remember the ending. and i was facinated

@Ceelceela portland oregon, i was but a lad. always moved by the doors. and somewhat confused by the haters
tomosoos 11 months ago
@tomosoos well I am going to guess the cops were around the stage because it was post "miami incident".
This was music of rebellion, so haters are to be expected. Soft driven and slow like some strange new language.
Welcome to the soft parade.

Everybody here is a fucking ghost. Nobody gets it. Not even me, and I'm a genius...or at least, I was, at some point.

Good to see again. I was there and didn't know who they were. That afternoon and watching The Orb in 1993 definitely the best gigs I ever saw.
