  • This is the best tutorial ever. Overhead shot. Switch back and forth between normal speed and slow motion so we don't lose track of what we are doing and SIMPLE, direct talk.

  • @m00n69 Glad you liked it, thanks. :-)

  • I wish you were my real life piano teacher.

    Oh wait, you are.

  • I've been playing piano for over 4 years now. Im 14 years old and I absoulutly LOVE your tutorials. Their simple. Shawn Cheeks may be simple but he never really teaches you the whole thing and he's a little to quick. Thank you for the tutorials. Thanks to you, pianojohn113, I know over 20 Beatles songs. P.S- Could you learn how to play tears in heaven by eric clapton, I love that song and I've been dying to learn it. Other people did tutorials but they go way to fast. Thanxs. Love your videos.

  • @singeroftheages Very glad yo ulike them, thanks! Congrats to you on doing so well on the piano at 14 years old. It's good to know you enjoy the same songs that I do. I'll try to get to that Clapton song at some point soon!

  • @pianojohn113 Thanks very much

  • Have you got notes on papers or on a pdf? Thanks :-) for the video!

  • @DerFridinger I don't have them written down on a digital file, at least not yet. Glad you like the vid!

  • @DerFridinger I have them if they're still useful to you...

  • i love your work you help me so much but i only have a keybord so i get anoyded when you go to the low b with both finger like the whole octive so if you could it would be great if you could put more of thease keyboard style songs they help alot thx

  • This is fantastic! Could you perhaps do a tutorial of the piano parts Billy Preston plays throughout the entire song? I think it's just a couple chords at the end of each verse. Thanks John!

  • @DTGninja Yes - that was supposed to be my next project when I did this video all those years ago, and never got around to it. It's a great keyboard song, a lots of fun to ad-lib.

  • Maaan you're amazing! I've been looking for several piano lessons and you appear everywhere! I was like this O: when I saw this one xD You're an amazing piano player (:

  • @yadreppirt Glad you found me, and that you like the vids! :-)

  • Maaan you're everywhere! I mean.. I've been looking for several piano lessons and you have like everything I've been looking for! You play fantastic (: Thanks a lot!

  • Its not so much the notes but the feel and flavor in which Billy Preston played it..personally speaking...white people jsut dont have the feel to play that solo right.

  • @RichTancredi thats not rascist at all.....

  • Nice job, but you've got one thing wrong. On the roll down through the D7 9, the first time, you've got the ending right with an e and f#. However, the second time he rolls down, the last two notes are f NATURAL and f#. Have a listen to the actual recording again. Its pretty clear that the f natural is there.

  • @bmaugust61 Yes, an F natural will work there too instead of an E.

  • when i try to do the first solo down. my index finger keeps hitting the d. so frustrating

  • @johntsunami It's a difficult roll, but you'll get it. Go slower at first, then work your way up. Remember, you're playing a solo by Billy Preston, so it takes a bit of work to get it just right!

  • hi, me and my band are trying to do a cover of this :) i'm lead guitar but i'm trying to learn this aswell so we can do the whole song :) great lesson thanks

  • Could you record this as a midi file?it would be so much easier to learn that way

  • @cast390 I don't really have a way to make a file conversion, but if anyone else wants to do it, that's fine with me.

  • @cast390 check out D W Barnes midi site. he has a good version of this. Like note for note

  • @pianojohn113 yep, really. i jammed it yesterday with some friends, it sounded SO cool with the solo! dude you're awesome!

  • omg THANK. YOU.

  • great video! now i know how to do it!

  • ohh yaaaa this solo gets me dancin so much tanks yo!

  • OMFG THANK U SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH

  • My sincere thanks John. I've just put this all to sheet music to play in my BTEC national diploma tomorrow.

  • @theflyingmusician1 Great! I hope it went well. :-)

  • Hey John, which do you like better john or paul. Or should i say whos music of the 2 do you like listening to/ playing?

  • @tripleacesofspades I like them both, just depends on my current mood, I guess.

  • @pianojohn113 Yeah Pauls is always more Loose and Carefree And johns is more tense and serious and tight. At least thats what i hear

  • Amazing! thanks!

  • That's great, John. Looking forward to it!

Thanks again for taking the time to do this.

  • Thanks so much for this, John. Can you show how Billy does the rit. chord arpeggios Billy uses during the break?

  • @bryanpersaud Yes, in fact I should have probably done those when I made this video.. just forgot. I'll try to post something on that soon.

  • hey, i was just wondering, what would be the best beatles song for a beginner to learn first?

  • @pandui The best Beatles song to learn from the ones I have posted would probably be Hey Jude, and possibly Golden Slumbers.

  • @pandui or you could learn imagine instead very easy and awesome to play

  • LAG

  • Bello!

  • can you make a tutorial for im happy just to dance with you.

    pleassseeee.

  • you are great pianojohn! I was wondering if you might lend your expertise to teaching a few of the riffs billy used when he played with the stones live...esp. on the "love you live" album from late 70's...It would be so great if I could just get some kind of feel for it,,,thanx again!

  • @jamesmykal Glad you liked it! Billy Preston's riffs were some of the best I've heard. He could really turn a chord inside out. I'll check out that live version, thanks for the heads up.

  • Omg THANK YOU

AGAIN I IMPRESSED MY FRIENDS =) YAY!?!?!?!?!?

    YOU THE BEST

  • @grantlockwood98 Hey, impressing your friends is the best reason for learning this solo, right! :-)

  • dude!! thanks so much!!

  • You're very welcome! Enjoy. :-)

  • Thanks for postin this! These videos are great they really help a lot!

  • Glad they helped!

  • good stuff man... thanks for the help! CHECK OUT MY MUSIC

    :)

    JACOB JEFFRIES BAND

  • Great tutorials PianoJohn!!!

Do you have a tutorial for different blues rolls & fills for piano & B3? That's what I'm looking for... do it in C or G, & I can transposed to other keys. Just looking for different ideas. Thanks again!!

  • Thanks! I don't have a tutorial for any of those yet, but I may add a few if I have some time.

  • WOW...can send me the sheet music please?

  • Great video for a Magic solo. I'm trying to get it here, thanks john :D

  • Pianojohn113...I just want to thank u for all this tutorials...you are like my inspipration to learn how to play piano...and i already learn this keyboard solo of course from the beatles..and i satrted to learn desperado by eagles...do you think is good for a beginner like me?...thank you so much..for all the work put in this videos...Sorry for my english ok take care have a nice week

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it.. Desperado can work for a beginner, as long as you're comfortable with 4-note chords. It's slow enough where it shouldn't be too hard to learn.

  • k i've been in music theory I this semester and still can't understand why people keep saying 9th intead of just saying 2nd just never got it. :( nice work though billy preston rip!

  • While the 9th and 2nd are the same notes in a chord, the 9th is normally played as the top note included with the 3rd, and the 2nd is usually played next to the root without the 3rd. This is not always true, but it may help you understand the difference somewhat.

  • hi can you make a cover of money or slow down please??

  • @beatlekid1941 YO ill slow it down and post it for yall

  • hey piano john, thx for adding my video. You tutorial is great as well..Every one could play that solo after following your lesson and with some practice.

I tried to show how does it sound in a live set :D

  • Well, it sounded great, nice job, well done. That was a really good performance of the song.. you guys have some chops in that band! Excellent!

  • Very nice! A lot of thanks to you, my friend. Learned this in 10 minutes, and it was just what I needed for our band :-) thank you!

  • Hey, nice job learning it so quickly.. Glad it helped you!

  • HOW did u do that??

  • I learned this in about an hour thanks to you man you should consider selling these videos

  • Glad it was helpful, danjm!

  • i love the beginning.

  • DUUUDE!!! that is soooo fricken' cool. I think you just saved me like years of work, and I'm serious. Beautifully well thought out explanation. Thank you, awesome.

  • Cool! Glad you liked it, and that it was helpful.

  • too fast for me but you are soo good!

  • I've seen a lot of your tutorials. They're awesome, but one I havn't seen is Back in the ussr. Would be great to learn that one too.

  • You're awesome!!! You have no idea how grateful I am for all of your piano tutorial! I'm a big fan of yours! Thank You !!!

  • Glad to do it for you! This is a fun one to play, isn't it? :-)

  • the second roll is -> a f# d

  • These lessons are amazing! I'v been playing piano for a week and I can play this... that's how good these are! keep em' up! Beatles are my favorite band

  • Hey John, just wondering, were you with the Beatles when they were active??? cause u seem very very good at playing lots of their songs...wish i could play like that...

  • WOW did this ever save me time!!! Had a gig that came up last minute and it would have taken me a while to learn this, THANKS A BUNCH!!! Do you ever post any sessions about the theory behind the licks or the artists you cover?

  • Comment removed

  • thank you thank you thank you!! i've been trying to figure this out forever, but i can't play by ear very well. now when i play Get Back it sounds awesome with the keyboard solo!

  • That's great, I'm glad it helped!

  • You are a wizard! Thanks for all the great Beatles lessons.

  • Hey, pianojohn!!! i finally got this! you need to check it out its going to be on my youtube shortly.

  • Cool! Let me know when it's posted.

  • It's up now. As you will probably tell, i made a mistake in the second half and cut it out. It sounds really bad. And i missed the last chord at the end. Nice to talk to you. your vids are an inspiration to all!

  • I learned this in like 5 hours just to get it right

  • maybe in a hundred years i'll play it like u do

  • that was amazing

  • THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!

  • Great video very clear on how to play it. If you could, could you do the same with the solo for Don't Let Me Down. Thanks

  • Wow, this is actually way easier to play than it seems. Great tutorial, as always.

  • Okay! Great one. I'm working on it. Do you think you could do the same for the Lynard Skynnard solo in "Things Goin' On"?

    Very grateful for this vid.

    Thanks.

  • Very good video, like all the others you make!

Wasn't half as hard as I thought, but would have been much harder without you help:)

  • Bravo..!!!

I'll do as soon with my group.. you are great..!!!

I hope to post a video response of get back live..! ;-)

    Ciao ciao!

  • Just wondering, why was your piano half closed?

  • It wasn't closed, the camera angle was just too far forward. I'd used a different camera stand on that one while I made adjustments to the original.

  • Thanks sooo much! I practiced it for a couple hours...I'll be performing it tonight at a gig. Hopefully someone will be video taping it so I can post.

  • Hope it went well! Did anyone tape it?

  • Unfortunately they forgot the camera, but the gig went great and I got to wow people with that solo. Thanks for your help. I adjusted it slightly so it's a bit easier to play for people that do not have a lot of technical skill. I think I may post my version at some point. Can't wait to see more of your stuff.

  • Yes, the solo always goes over well with audiences.. I think they don't expect the keyboardist to play it.

Too bad it wasn't taped.. But do post your own version, that would be great!

  • THANK YOU!! We are covering 'Get Back' in my band and although I mostly play guitar, I play keyboard for a couple of songs, and have been looking for this solo to add to our version. Man! the guys aint gonna know what hit em next rehearsal! I cant thank you enough...we also do 'Revolution' Any chance you could post that? ;)

    You're keeping England rocking!

    Best Wishes.

  • Glad to do it! I'd never seen this one taught anywhere, so it seemed like a good idea. And audiences love it, too. They're always blown away by it, and that's a credit to Billy Preston's abilities.

  • what about the two bar pickup after "..get back to where you once belong.."?

  • Didn't do that part, you're right... If I get around to it, I'll add it to a tutorial.

  • thanks for posting this video it sounds really good! i love this song! but i was wondering if you have any sheet music for this could you possibly post it?? the tutorial is really helpful but its hard for me to go straight from the computer to the piano if you know what i mean.

thanks! your an awesome piano player!

  • Thanks Melina.. I don't have the sheet music, unfortunately.. Sorry about that!

  • John - This is just GREAT!

I tripped on to it a few days ago and can't tell you how many times I've watched it. Amazing! You've got some golden ears there my friend - to be able to discern what Billy was playing with such precision. Fantastic job! Speaking of electric piano solos in Beatle songs, how about taking a crack at the electric piano solo in "Revolution" that was played by Nicky Hopkins? That would be a real gas! Thanks again for this (and all your other hard work).

    best regards,

    Yanni

  • Thanks Yanni! This is my favorite Beatles solo, so I'm glad you're enjoying it too.

The Revolution solo was supposed to be up there with this one, but I never got around to it.. Thanks for the reminder!

  • YOU KICK ASS!

  • Thanks! :-)

  • If you do pick up a little van halen on here, could you do a tut on slippery when wet?

i have alwaies wanted to learn it.

  • I'll add it to the list. Thanks.

  • Know what? It'd be great if you started off your vidoes with playing the song as a whole, uninterupted. That makes things easier when trying to catch a melody in what you're playing. So, first play the tune from start to fin and then break it up into easy to digest piecies like you've done so far. Just a tip, 'cause that kinda bugged me. Sebastian

  • Yes, I do that for most of my newer videos now.. Had that same suggestion from several people.

  • have you ever thought about playing jump by van halen? just asking.

  • I used to play that, actually, back in the '80s.. it's been a while, though. :-)

  • do you know any Pink Floyd?

  • Not really, although I do have a couple of their old albums.

  • Very nice work, indeed.

With your help, I can now play with my band "Martha my dear" and "Get Back". Can you post a video for the "Revolution" short keyboard solo ? That would be great with your fantastic ear !

  • Yes, actually that short piano part is excellent, and I think was done by Billy Preston as well. I'll try to get something done on that. Thanks for the comment!

  • John, thank you very much to consider my request. I'm just a little frog (french!) and appreciate a lot your lessons (I performed yesterday "A day in the life" and, with your help again, I surprised my band ! Please keep on and give us such good Beatles (or whatever you like to learn us) vibrations :-) Olivier

  • thanks for all your lessons pianojohn....would you consider teaching "The year of the cat" by Al Stewart. Thank you

  • I haven't played it for a while, but I'll see if I can dust off the sheets and give it a shot.

  • ty for this :D

  • You're very welcome!

  • Right on John !!!! What an ear.

  • Thanks! Glad you liked it. Billy Preston deserves a lot of the credit too! :-)

  • Did Billy Preston write the solo?

  • Indeed, he wrote it and performed it on the album.

  • I leaned it,i still have to get the rhythm down better, and get it up to speed, i am now started to work on "A Day In The Life" another great song,i think if you did'nt post the "Get Back" solo i would of not have leaned it,the song books i have don't show the solo, even if they did nothing like to see how it's is played, thank's again, hope to see more of your video's, P.S, do you do any of "The Doors" songs, if you do i would love to lean there songs

  • That's good, keep working on it! The music books rarely include the solos, for whatever reason, but I think they are important to play.

I don't really play any Doors songs, but maybe some day.

  • Great videos. Can you put the elton john song called Funeral for a friend on. i would like to learn that!

  • Yes, Funeral for a Friend has a great intro and is a little bit long to try to teach on a video, but I love that song and I'll see if I can get something done on that.

  • Thanks for all these helpful video lessons. After working at them for a while they work out well. It's a great way to learn. Got any help for the solo for Don't Let Me Down. Thanks.

  • Thanks, glad it was helpful!

Yes, the "Don't Let Me Down" solo should have been on my last set of vids, but I forgot to include it. I should have it on the next set.

  • So far i am getting it, what do you play in your left hand in the solo? what notes or chords

  • Well, for this solo part, Billy Preston just played a right hand part.. The band backed him up, but from the vids I've seen of it he did not include a left hand. If you want to add the left, you can play octave bass notes on the beat (it's just an A followed on the "chord change" by a D), or octaves with the 5th added between. That's worked for me in the past.

  • Very good video on the solo, but i am working at it

  • That's good, keep it up.. it's one of my all-time favorite solos.

  • good teacher!

  • Thanks! Glad you liked it.

  • what about the "in my life solo" i cannot get that one

  • Some people have asked for that one, but it's actually one of the more difficult ones to learn (and teach on a video). I might put it up anyway, though, so stay tuned!

  • I know why it's so difficult: it was recorded at half-speed and played back at double speed (at which we know it now) at the actual recording but neverless you can try to play it. If you slow the music down by half you'll hear a normal piano sound and speed.

P.s. thank you for your piano instruction videos

  • Yes, it was written and played by George Martin, who slowed the recording down and played along with it, then sped back up on the final cut.

  • Great job teaching. I learned the whole lead and added it to my recorded guitar tracks and just looking for a singer.

  • That's great! What a fun song to play. I'd love to hear your rendition of it.

  • thanks for this great tutorial

  • You're welcome, glad you liked it!

  • Your piano videos are great but this one looks like you couldn't slow down for some of the fast parts..

  • You could be right.. it's a quick solo and sometimes playing it slower can be more difficult than playing it at regular speed.

  • tahnks very much thsi help me a lott youre a greate player

  • Thanks, I'm glad it helped!

  • It this the original version from the big white beatles book?

  • This was originally from a video I used to have of Billy Preston singing "Get Back" with his own backup group.. I got the white book about a year ago and was then able to correct some errors I'd made, so this is a combination of the video, the white Beatles book, and just listening to it.

  • good sound to a classic

  • Thanks! It's one of my favorite piano solos.

  • HA! This makes me wanna start jammin in A rather than Eb! Nice vid!

  • good one this

  • YES! you have no idea how glad i am to have found this vid!. Thank you so much you're awesome

  • Fantastic!

  • Nice!I'm really enjoying your song selections! Thanks again for posting these video, they are VERY helpful and fun! poor billy preston..rip :(

  • Thanks for your kind comments! Billy Preston was great.
