  • So many performers I remember when they were alive and now most of them are gone, God bless them. I remember I use to take wife to see them on stage. Wonderful memories on this film.

  • My Dad ODIE STANTON (guitar) used to play with her and Hawkshaw in the late 50's and early 60's.

    Penny Stanton (McCurdy)

  • @pennystanton1 Giid performers - Jean S. and the Hawk.

  • This is Heaven!! It dosen't get any better than this. The great Jean Shepard deserves to be in the country music hall of fame.Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs this is perfect.

  • i hope i can figure out how to play all these opry video, i used to go a lot in the 50s and 60s.. what a show. thanks for putting these on u tube.

  • @eddard1956 I will upload the entire show for you with the commercials though..

It will be uploaded by tomorrow morning at the latest.

    Lloyd.

  • I went to the Opry in 1948. The ole Ryman was hot and uncomfortable, but the entertainment back then made you forget the heat.

The Carter Family, Hank Williams, Red Fowley and Roy Acuff were there. I loved it.

  • @MrCraig1930 yes, it must have been a pleasure actually seeing these performers live!!

  • @richardcwood1 Imagine how the singers were in the lights. It must have been rather uncomfortable. I recently uploaded 5 episodes of the Old American Barn Dance. Patsy Montana, Homer & Jethro , The SaddlePals , and many more early '50's country stars are featured.

  • Jean Shepard came along when women were not singing in Nashville, except Kitty Wells, so songwriters were not writing songs for women, so many were singing "Heart Songs", Jean entered into the HonkyTonk sound later on and is a great "Country" singer, the material was many times lacking-not her fault. I would like to see some of the new girls hit those notes with just a flat guitar behind her.

  • @MrRonyHigh Interesting, informative info about the female pioneers of Country music.

This song does , for me, sound more like a song composed for a male singer. I suppose that is the difficulty many female singers faced at the time. The song, as performed does has merit though.

  • I don't know about that Jean Shepard........I want to see & hear more Foggy Mountain Boys ! ! They are a class act and always will be.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL I have had a similar thought. She just seemed a "bit out of place" on the Grand Ole Opry.

    Lloyd.

  • @MisterStereo Thanks for responding. I don't think Jean Shepard has a good enough voice. And anyway, you have to have an awesomely beautiful voice to do all the singing yourself. For the most part, a song without some harmony, is boring. I guess that is why I DON"T watch "Amer. Idol"-------- Les sings alone here, but bluegrass & Flatt & Scruggs are about the pretty harmony. & the fantastic instrumentation ! .....Way to go Earl. Paul, & Josh !!!!

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Enjoyed reading your comment. .

Alao, it is interesting with his 3 finger playing style.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Won't judge your taste in singers, but will simply say that thousands of people, including myself, disagree with the idea that Jean doesn't have a good voice. She was and is an original who should be in the Hall of Fame. I've been honored to meet her several times and will say that she's one of the most down to earth people I've met in the business. Jean, Kitty, Texas Ruby, Molly O'Day, and other ladies of that era had their hands full paving the way. Kudos to all of them.

  • @cmlbob I must say that she had an excellent voice!! Personally, I thought that maybe the song performed on this particular show was somewhat incompatible. Of course, it must be said that, at the time, there were not as many Country genre songs for women singers. It seems to me that her placement in the show should have been prior to or after the Chet Atkins spot. I think both these accomplished performers would have augmented each other.

    Regards

  • @cmlbob I respect you for that. I shouldn't talk because I don't care for most country music. I like bluegrass like Flatt & Scruggs and it has a whole different sound. Thanks!

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Apppreciate the comment.

I have a flatt and scruggd video on this channel and a song on my misterstereo1 channel.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Apppreciate the comment.

I have a Jim & Jesse bluegrass video on this channel and a song on my misterstereo1 channel also..

  • @MisterStereo....Thank you! I love both bands & I will check them out on your channels. Thank you for giving all us music fans something GREAT to enjoy!

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL A pleasure!!

TY so very much for your nice comment.

    Enjoy the music.

    Lloyd.

  • @cmlbob Oh my, I like Jean Shepard's singing.

If I left the impression that I did not enjoy her singing in previous messages, I am sorry!!

I think we were talking about the song performed and it's origins .

I like her recorded duet with Ferlin Husky titled "Dear John"

    Sincerely,

    Lloyd.

  • good stuff!! id watch this if it were on tv now.

  • I would also.

    Nice.

    Lloyd.

  • Now that's DORKY having a 2-neck guitar ! ! Doesn't that belong in heavy metal band ? Country music can be so HOKEY !

  • Not really. Waylon Jennings and many other Country, POP, Rap,

R& B musicians use this type of guitar.

It depends on what their preference is, I suppose.

    Anyway, TY for watching.

  • @MisterStereo--- I guess that's why I prefer BLUEGRASS music.!....And I do thank you for this video of Flatt & Scruggs & The Foggy Mountain Boys. They are great !

  • I am pleased , for that reason, that I was able to post this video.

If I recall , either Lester Flatt or Earl Scruggs was in a car accident around that time.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL That doubleneck Mosright guitar was given to Larry Collins of the Collins Kids by one of the greatest guitar players of all time, Joe Maphis. It was an exact copy of the guitar Joe played. The theme song of the TV show Bonanza was played by Joe. Joe has several videos on YouTube, give them a look.

  • @pro3tlb ..Thanks for your interesting comment. They are very talented. No offense...I still think the 2-neck is corny, and it is UNattractive to look at. It's just a gimmick. (imho)

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL "Alabama" used a double - didn't look that bad.

    Lloyd.

  • @MisterStereo "Alabama" WAS a great band. That's what counts.-----Thx for not getting mad at my 2-neck insults ! I wasn't too nice, but you & pro3tlb are !

...Flatt & Scruggs are my favorite and this footage is superb. And Josh looks like a doll .... ! ! !

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL As far as the 2 neck guitar comments - I only considered it as an opinion.

I understand that that guitar was closely associated with Rock-A-Billysuch as young Larry Collins and "Alabama".

As for this video, yea, isn't this vintage music the greatest!!

    Take care!!

    Regards;

    Lloyd.

  • @pro3tlb "Alabama" also used a double.

I am not sure which musician used it though.

  • Wow~!! Great video!!!

This must have been just after Earls horrific car accident since he's sitting on a stool!

  • TY

I didn't know Earl Scruggs was in an accident

    Lloyd

  • Sure was Oct 2 nd 1955. He was enroute to Shelby to check on his mother who had suffered a stroke. And as he puts a "Boozed Up Driver" hit the car they were in. Messed up Earls hip pretty good as well as injuring Louise..Fortunately the "kids" were not seriously hurt. IIRC He had to have a hip replacement because of this.

    These are some GREAT videos!!

    Wt

  • TY so very much for the info about his accident.

    A vey lucky family.

    Lloyd

  • I wonder if Earl Scruggs got his hip replaced soon after the accident, or later on in his life ?

  • Someone mentioned thathad hip strgury.

I would have to read his biography

  • I think I remember him saying that one was replaced maybe as a result of that accident and the other was done later on.. Memory not working like I want it to LOL!!

  • Yes, thank goodness we have these videos to jolt ur memory. LOL

  • Excellant!!!!

  • Jean Shepard, Flatt and Scruggs, Ferlin Husky

    I totally enjoyed this part

    Lloyd
