Switching chairs was absolutely a way of taking control/ power and asserting dominance while putting her in an unfamiliar state opposite her own desk. Simple mind tricks to reorient her thinking patterns.
He switched chairs (to show he had power over her), told her some things she should have seen in her dreams (opening her to suggestion). and then told her she can comment (open to suggestion) but she should avoid asking questions (showing power). It is that simple.

@jshowa2 Yet youre still telling me that a priest was able to piece together a heart into the round piece of flesh we see instead of just grabbing some normal skin, that sounds to elaborate for a trickster. Youre also telling me that this flesh and blood this guy fooled the people into thinking was once bread and wine just happens to not decay without perservatives which is illogical and impossible according to what normally happens to flesh within a day or two
@jshowa2 Actually I am skeptical. I dont believe in all the speaking in tongues, being slain in the spirit crap, and I sure wouldnt believe a one touch conversion. I dont believe it. And im sorry about my bad wording, I should have said the proteins in the blood indicate it is fresh even though it shouldnt be fresh because it has been around for 1300 years without perservatives. Your right in that I only believe that it was once bread through faith that they didnt lie. Thats understandable.
@jshowa2 It has been around without perservatives meaning it should have decayed centuries ago. Yet it hasnt. The proteins within the blood indicate that it is still fresh even though it isnt fresh. It was created miraculously from bread and is miraculously preserved from decay. In other words bread doesnt turn into flesh and flesh shouldnt remain around without decay 1300 years. Most flesh begins to decay within days. That is why dead people are treated with chemicals to preserve their bodies
@jshowa2 Thank you for the lunatic remark too. Also the virgin birth means that Mary did not have sexual intercourse however this doesnt mean Jesus has to have X chromosome. It could but that isnt required. it is called a miracle for a reason I would find it more amazing if Jesus had normal male XY and came from a virgin birth but that wont sit well with you and you will call me a fool for believing this.
@jshowa2 Ok i understand your reasoning with the virgin birth but as I said the flesh has been around for 1300 years, no perservatives have been found, and it still scientifically registers as fresh. It is miraculous. And the whole congegration saw this transformation meaning someone would call this a fraud if one sunday he says he found this flesh and its Christ. Also how could a priest from the 700s create a round piece of flesh that is a whole heart that wont decompose?
@jshowa2 I believe because I know there is a God. I happen to believe that Christ is God because he was on this Earth, died and rose from the dead, etc. There is evidence. If you were to search you would find it. You can take miracles as an example such as the Eucharistic miracle at lanciano. The bread turned into flesh and the wine into blood. The flesh is human and still around. Scientists have tested it and have found no preservatives although it tests as fresh and has been around 1300 years

@johntkooz Most "abductions" are most like hypnogonic hallucinations...before UFO's became common in cultures these sorts of dreams would be blamed on succubi and inccubi. I wouldn't rule out trauma and disassociation from being a factor in some though.
@patchworkz7 Correct. Sleep paralysis is also a common reason. The individual regains consciousness while the body remains asleep. It often leads to the individual panicking and flicking in and out of the conscious and unconscious states of mind (alpha, beta, and delta if I remember correctly). Happened to me once and I felt not only panicked but could feel a very 'demonic' energy in the room. However, upon waking and regaining my full consciousness I also regained my common sense.
@thespian83 Yeah, I've suffered from hypnogonic hallucinations (false awakenings, feelings of someone in my room, waking but not being able to move, etc) since I was a kid. It's just a disruption of the normal sleep cycle (in my case I'm a medical worker and sleep odd hours, so that doesn't help), but in someone predisposed to believing crazy stuff they don't think "my brain made a bad connection for a few minutes" but "aliens came and got me"
@patchworkz7 I suffer from this also. The most frightening part for me is not being able to move. The hallucinations are bad enough, but the feel of trying so hard and not being able to move is the worst feeling in the world. I really have an appreciation for people that are actually paralyzed.
He sometimes does explain his tricks, but not always. And I think thats good. It kinda takes the mystery, when you know exactly how he fooled you and it wouldn't be half as fun. you should just keep in mind, that there IS a trick behind it.
The truth is he's real, he has all these powers he's just trying to destroy everyones belief in them so he can be rich later!!!!! ahem okay not really but bet some of the believers think this :>
Though I find it hard to believe that anyone could be so gullible, I can surely see her pretending "omg he is so good!" because there are cameras and she has to really peddle her own kind to stay in business...
Western, "Christian" people thrived by disassociating and rejecting their faith (Enlightenment, Scientific rev, etc) while Muslims thrived by embracing theirs (Golden Age of Islam, Library at Baghdad, etc).. As a recent convert to Islam this video has only increased my faith in Islam and decreased my faith in Christian Evangelicism.
dude if he could make her think she dreamed of anything just to have fun with her i woulve made her dream about eating her own shit or something lol make it funny
I gotta read Derren Brown´s incstructional books. If he can convince people into believing all these wacky things, surely It can help a guy get laid. :)
Omg... people are dumb... they believe whatever they see and whatever they want. Why do you think there have been so many successful con men? And religion, the biggest con of all.
A common theme to any of Darren Brown's manipulation tricks that I notice is that early on he asks them to do something for him. Usually nothing big, just a simple task (for example asking to switch chairs with the woman in this clip) but I think that this is the moment where he asserts his mental authority over the person, possibly allowing him to influence their mind more easily.
I perfectly agree with you. It certainly anchors that he is the one in charge for this scenario. A similar technique is placing one's hand upon the other's shoulder to promote authority over them. I do this when I am giving someone a command.
@Ariesxe i'm not a psych major but observing or reading about how a text-book sociopath will work out a "con", we see this pattern, but several other factors are needed. Often, they include the promise of compensation or a rather high payback for participation. slight of hand, passing the cheese from person1 to con to person2....so many cons, so little time. =( it's a shame really. but this guy is really GOOD.
@Ariesxe the vast majority of the things he does and says play a crucial functional role in the psychological manipulation, so yes you have the right inkling there.
@Ariesxe Excellent observation there! It's a technique to elicit compliance. Covered in books on cold reading skills, as well as, I think, in Cialdini's "Psychology of Influence".
@Ariesxe yes, and it may be bigger than that, in her chair she has the control of the room, mood...by changing it he implies now I'm in charge using nlp
@Ariesxe Yes, you are spot-on. It is a technique commonly used in hypnosis referred to as "building compliance". It prepares the subject to subconsciously accept commands or believe the ideas you present to him or her. It can be as simple as asking someone to hand you a piece of paper or moving their chair forward by two inches. That's all it takes.
Whats wrong with being atheist and how can you associate a belief with it. Do you have a set of principles if you don't believe in Santa Clause. No, but you do have a set if principles if you do. Same goes with the tooth fairy, bigfoot, God, etc..
So quit giving atheists an adjective, believe what you want, but don't try to force it onto innocent people unless you urge them to challenge the beliefs and look at physical reasons to believe in God.
Its really quite simple. You either believe in something or you don't believe something, and you either believe there is absolute evidence for it or you don't believe there is absolute evidence for it.
You cannot not be agnostic and not be faithful at the same time. They are contradictories. Likewise, you cannot not be an atheist and not be a theist at the same time. Those too are contradictories.
You actually do have a set of principles for not believing in Santa Claus. You have rules for what suffices as proper evidence, and the evidence out there in support of Santa Claus fails to meet that criteria.
I don't really see what you're trying to argue against. I never said anything was wrong with being an atheist or a theist, nor did I say anything was wrong with being agnostic or faithful.
I am an atheist, but I recognize the (unlikely) possibility that a god could exist.
So if your a democrat lets say, it means your a theist?
Since liberal economic policies do not compare to republican policies in an economical stand point, would that mean republicans are atheist and liberals are theist?
You are missing the big picture, people are forced to believe things that are untrue and they base there lives off of them, so as your basically saying, they don't have a set of principles (Those with religion forced on them) which cant be true.
What the fuck are you talking about? First off, democrats and republicans are not contradictories, they are contraries. You could be neither, but not both.
Furthermore, you could be a democrat and a theist or an atheist, or a republican and a theist or an atheist. You're trying to take what I said about the definitions of words and turn it into religious oppression. All I did was define a few terms.
I know the comments that you post make sense in your mind and you know exactly what you are talking about, but the rest of us don't. I have read your second paragraph at least five times and it still makes no sense.
If necessary, you can elaborate and perhaps post a second comment to finish your thought.
Individuals have sets of rules/principles/whatever for ALL claims, regardless of the actual truth of the claim. Every reasonable person will admit that its possible that god exists and its possible that god doesn't exist. We then use our personal rules to decide whether or not we BELIEVE god exists. We do this by looking at the evidence and decide if that evidence is convincing enough. This applies for gods, myths, Santa, your computer, everything.
Read my original comment. I don't know exactly what you are referring to, but its impossible to JUST be an agnostic. You have to either believe or not believe as well.
@garrettducat I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here. It seems you're attempting to place people into categories that don't really fit. Telling people that they can't possibly believe what they've just told you they believe is childish and silly. It is possible for someone to believe that there is both the possibility of a God existing and not existing, and that there isn't sufficient evidence for either proposition, or that the very question defies the possibility of proof.
@guysmiley00 You're missing my point. My point is that you either believe something exists or you do not believe that thing exists. There is no way around that: its the law of non-contradiction. Furthermore, you either believe the evidence for something proves it absolutely beyond any doubt or you do not believe that that is the case.
@garrettducat I think you're overlooking the fact that, law of non-contradiction notwithstanding, you're inserting assumptions in your categories that are not necessarily all-encompassing. You are making assumptions in the definitions of "God", "existence", and "evidence" (and probably other areas) that make your categories insufficient to cover the range of possible states. As such, your categories are incomplete and, in insisting that they aren't, you are being overly reductionist.
Words mean things, and that matters. What determines their meanings are collective consensus. The meanings can change, OVER TINME. What they can't do is be redefined for despicable personal agendas like you are trying to do.
Evidence means evidence. God means God. Existence means existence.
You don't get to redefine them to whatever you want them to mean. You aren't a collective. You are, however, a sophist, a nice way in philosophy to say:
@Aquaria My goodness, I think someone needs a time out.
I can't help but notice that you insisted that "words mean things" (which I agree with), but then failed to actually provide definitions for the words in question.
at 1:47 he tells her to not ask him any questions. maybe because he knows what he's about to do is the most unbelievable part, and she could question if its real
I would guess that Lorraine DiFelice is only following "Robert Frowly's" lead, because she sees he has showmanship and she can exploit it commercially. She is a business owner first and metaphysical believer second. Watch Richard Dawkins interview with Derren Brown. There Brown explains that there is more money to be made and celebrity presenting yourself a having real supernatural abilities. Presenting yourself as a performer of illusions and parlor tricks, doesn't pay as well.
some people who claims they are atheists are actually just agnostics- they simply don't care whether there is god or not- these people can be persuaded to believe in god because they didn't really spend time convincing themselves strongly that god does not exist. atheists actively deny the existence of god- they are convinced. agnostics don't even bother exploring the question but are comfortable not believing until persuaded otherwise.
Atheism is a lack of belief in gods. That's it. Therefore, it is not a belief system. There are many belief systems atheists can actually ascribe to. Most people who think of atheists think of rationalists, skeptics, and secular humanists, but Scientology and Buddhism are actually atheist worldviews as well.
I consider myself a secular humanist, which basically means I use reason to develop my world view and my ethics, while rejecting a supernatural basis for morals and decision making.
@64amped: It isn't. There are many facts that go against the need of any god to explain reality, while there is no definitive clue that there are any supernatural beings.
So, if you are atheist because your parents told you so, it is your belief system; but if you think and question rationally, you quite likely reach atheism (here a synonym for agnosticism, disbelief, secular humanism...).
To support the concept of atheism, but to deny the concept of "creationism" is absurd.
Both polar conclusions are simply beliefs based on faith. Neither hypothesis is empirically provable.
Therefore the true scientific approach would be agnosticism. I find most atheist usually hold a form of resentment for their experiences with religion, which is understandable. But what does that have to do with the existence of a supreme consciousness?
If you do not believe in god, any deity or supreme beings, but rely on the empirical world, you're an atheist in the sense that you consider utterly improbable that those thing exist.
They are there just as much as the tooth fairy, aether, or the invisible pink unicorn.
"If you do not believe in god, any deity or supreme beings, but rely on the empirical world, you're an atheist in the sense that you consider utterly improbable that those thing exist." - Inserting "empirical world" in that sentence is suggesting that there is a god or you rely on something else. An either or. You don't need to make any statement about any state of reality or not to be an atheist, if you do not believe in a god or deity then you are an atheist. Without any further comment!
Obviously one can label oneself as an atheist, but my point is they are no more rational than an evangelist. Both are simply polar opposites on an idea that is impossible to prove or disprove.
Both sides of the isle simply reflect one another in polarity. While both claim to hold superior knowledge or insight over the other side. The grand irony is both conclusions are based entirely in faith.
"Both are simply polar opposites on an idea that is impossible to prove or disprove." - No they are not. No matter how many times you keep thumping that idea of YOURS around it won't make it true. If i don't believe a theists claims i am an atheist. It is not an either or. They are not polar opposites and you are simply dishonest or at best stupid with your arguments. It takes no faith to not believe someone elses. It's a lack of it, IDIOT.
"While both claim to hold superior knowledge or insight over the other side" - So if you make a claim as a theist and i simply don't believe you. That makes me an atheist. To be honest i simply don't believe you, but theists felt that they needed a word to describe that. It happens to be atheist. I need to make no other claims about reality, i need to make no claims about knowledge to be an atheist. I simply don't believe. I think you need a strawman version of atheism to argue with tbh.
Agnosticism and atheism aren't mutually exclusive. You can be an agnostic atheist (which I am), or an agnostic theist. Agnosticism is an admission that as a human you are flawed and unable to truly know anything, especially things like religion and the supernatural which are unprovable and inherently unscientific.
Atheism is a belief in the lack of the supernatural, and I think due to the lack of evidence and incompatibility with science most rational people will at least doubt its existence.
"Both polar conclusions are simply beliefs based on faith. Neither hypothesis is empirically provable." - Not really. If someone tells me a crock of shit and i say i don't believe them then i don't expect some fucking moron to then start telling me i have yet another fucking belief system. My child told me he was an intergalactic warrior this morning, do i now have a new belief system? No, i simply don't fucking believe. Now get off your fucking bandwagon and grow up.

Did anybody of you fellas had for one second in mind that this women is a Business person highly influential in the business???? VERY INTerested in making money...???? she probably sniffed a lot of money with this uninteresting machine brought to the market by this very cool and convincing young men ???
Also a lot of his "suggestions" to the woman are very casino based. Of course this makes with her being surrounded by them all in Las Vegas, so ideas of cartwheels (circles like roulette wheels) and well dressed people becomes standard, but she acts surprised that he can work it out.
Very entertaining to watch her shift in expression. She seems very skeptical when he puts the pads on and says 'so, there's movement..', then loosens up. :) Great!
I do think that these dreams derren related to her were never actually dreamt by her at all, or if they were, Derren suggested embellishments which she subconciously accepted.. (and to clarify on an earlier point, she became psychologically uncomfortable because swapping chairs was, for her, a psychological demotion, but because of her respect and awe of the person she thought he was, she accepted it and so became willingly submissive, so heightening the effect of any sublimminal persuasion.)
Just look at the woman as she sit's down in 'Derren's' chair, she shows all the signs of being uncomfortable (more psychologically than physically)and i think this is a clever trick, because, the woman will take alot of psychological comfort from the belief that her personal and heartfelt dreams are preserved - and are not just (she hopes) meaningless brain nonsense.. and so, she may be alot more likely to [act emotionally and] accept&believe any 'false' memories derren may attempt to suggest.
I think one of the key moments in convincing the woman of the dream machine's authenticity was the moment when derren asked to swap chairs.. initially, derren encouraged and supported her self aggrandizing as she sat in her own chair talking about her 'great successes' whilst derren acted impressed and completely receptive to what she was saying.. then, and the crucial moment, he swapped chairs, and in doing so, swapped psychological states of mind (he became 'great' and she became receptive)
yeah, I ws thinking that too. (^_^) but maybe he thought he'd get pummeled by the lady.. or perhaps he wanted to keep the idea of scepticism away from other people in the media in order to complete his other set ups.
Cold reading is a good guess as everything he says is vague till she accepts it...its called a vague detail he he add the "higher satus" Derren gives himself by switching chairs claiming he will be more comfortable (meaning she will be less comfy and needing to belong he he) Lots of fun really! The change of stance is totally a Fritz perl thing from NLP meta model!
@scaplins yes, good point. I was actually surprised that they didn't just say, as a confidential aside, "how you doing it buddy? We all know it's just a scam"
So, does that mean they're just morons who really believe in this rubbish AND make loads of money from other morons? Or, as I think most likely, they just never let their guard down and come clean.
The technique is to put subconcious suggestions about what to draw into her head before she goes away to draw in the other room (and shout out a few more while she's there), so he can guess what she's thinking. People are far more open to suggestion than what is commonly believed. When people want to believe so strongly, then they will follow suggestions to confirm that belief.
Haha, hilarious, I always thought the hardest part of playing Derren's part is keeping a straight face and not burst laughing/crying in front of these people...

Any psych majors have any ideas?
Ariesxe 2 years ago 31
I perfectly agree with you. It certainly anchors that he is the one in charge for this scenario. A similar technique is placing one's hand upon the other's shoulder to promote authority over them. I do this when I am giving someone a command.
TwistingWays 1 year ago
@Ariesxe i'm not a psych major but observing or reading about how a text-book sociopath will work out a "con", we see this pattern, but several other factors are needed. Often, they include the promise of compensation or a rather high payback for participation. slight of hand, passing the cheese from person1 to con to person2....so many cons, so little time. =( it's a shame really. but this guy is really GOOD.
waterspindle 8 months ago
@Ariesxe the vast majority of the things he does and says play a crucial functional role in the psychological manipulation, so yes you have the right inkling there.

m3rcyk1ller 5 months ago
@Ariesxe Yes, you are spot-on. It is a technique commonly used in hypnosis referred to as "building compliance". It prepares the subject to subconsciously accept commands or believe the ideas you present to him or her. It can be as simple as asking someone to hand you a piece of paper or moving their chair forward by two inches. That's all it takes.
BrizyComics 4 months ago
You're all wrong. You are and can only be one of four things.
Agnostic Atheist - lack of belief and freely admits there is not sufficent evidence to prove any claims (most atheists).
Agnostic Theist - has a belief and freely admits there is not sufficent evidence to prove any claims.
Faithful Atheist - lack of belief and claims there is sufficent evidence to prove their claim.
Faithful Theist - has a belief and claims there is sufficent evidence to prove their claim (most theists).
garrettducat 2 years ago
Whats wrong with being atheist and how can you associate a belief with it. Do you have a set of principles if you don't believe in Santa Clause. No, but you do have a set if principles if you do. Same goes with the tooth fairy, bigfoot, God, etc..
So quit giving atheists an adjective, believe what you want, but don't try to force it onto innocent people unless you urge them to challenge the beliefs and look at physical reasons to believe in God.
So perhaps you were wrong as well.
SadegoGG 2 years ago
Its really quite simple. You either believe in something or you don't believe something, and you either believe there is absolute evidence for it or you don't believe there is absolute evidence for it.
You cannot not be agnostic and not be faithful at the same time. They are contradictories. Likewise, you cannot not be an atheist and not be a theist at the same time. Those too are contradictories.
garrettducat 2 years ago
You actually do have a set of principles for not believing in Santa Claus. You have rules for what suffices as proper evidence, and the evidence out there in support of Santa Claus fails to meet that criteria.
I don't really see what you're trying to argue against. I never said anything was wrong with being an atheist or a theist, nor did I say anything was wrong with being agnostic or faithful.
I am an atheist, but I recognize the (unlikely) possibility that a god could exist.
garrettducat 2 years ago
Really?
So if your a democrat lets say, it means your a theist?
Since liberal economic policies do not compare to republican policies in an economical stand point, would that mean republicans are atheist and liberals are theist?
You are missing the big picture, people are forced to believe things that are untrue and they base there lives off of them, so as your basically saying, they don't have a set of principles (Those with religion forced on them) which cant be true.
SadegoGG 2 years ago
What the fuck are you talking about? First off, democrats and republicans are not contradictories, they are contraries. You could be neither, but not both.
Furthermore, you could be a democrat and a theist or an atheist, or a republican and a theist or an atheist. You're trying to take what I said about the definitions of words and turn it into religious oppression. All I did was define a few terms.
garrettducat 2 years ago
I know the comments that you post make sense in your mind and you know exactly what you are talking about, but the rest of us don't. I have read your second paragraph at least five times and it still makes no sense.
If necessary, you can elaborate and perhaps post a second comment to finish your thought.
garrettducat 2 years ago
Individuals have sets of rules/principles/whatever for ALL claims, regardless of the actual truth of the claim. Every reasonable person will admit that its possible that god exists and its possible that god doesn't exist. We then use our personal rules to decide whether or not we BELIEVE god exists. We do this by looking at the evidence and decide if that evidence is convincing enough. This applies for gods, myths, Santa, your computer, everything.
garrettducat 2 years ago
That makes you agnostic, I thought...
TwistingWays 1 year ago
Read my original comment. I don't know exactly what you are referring to, but its impossible to JUST be an agnostic. You have to either believe or not believe as well.
garrettducat 1 year ago
@garrettducat I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here. It seems you're attempting to place people into categories that don't really fit. Telling people that they can't possibly believe what they've just told you they believe is childish and silly. It is possible for someone to believe that there is both the possibility of a God existing and not existing, and that there isn't sufficient evidence for either proposition, or that the very question defies the possibility of proof.
guysmiley00 1 year ago
@guysmiley00 You're missing my point. My point is that you either believe something exists or you do not believe that thing exists. There is no way around that: its the law of non-contradiction. Furthermore, you either believe the evidence for something proves it absolutely beyond any doubt or you do not believe that that is the case.
garrettducat 1 year ago
@guysmiley00 All I'm saying is that you HAVE TO be one of four things by law of non-contradiction:
Agnostic Atheist - lack of belief and freely admits there is not sufficent evidence to prove any claims.
Agnostic Theist - has a belief and freely admits there is not sufficent evidence to prove any claims.
Faithful Atheist - lack of belief and claims there is sufficent evidence to prove their claim.
Faithful Theist - has a belief and claims there is sufficent evidence to prove their claim.
garrettducat 1 year ago
@garrettducat I think you're overlooking the fact that, law of non-contradiction notwithstanding, you're inserting assumptions in your categories that are not necessarily all-encompassing. You are making assumptions in the definitions of "God", "existence", and "evidence" (and probably other areas) that make your categories insufficient to cover the range of possible states. As such, your categories are incomplete and, in insisting that they aren't, you are being overly reductionist.
guysmiley00 1 year ago
@guysmiley00
LIAR.

I would guess that Lorraine DiFelice is only following "Robert Frowly's" lead, because she sees he has showmanship and she can exploit it commercially. She is a business owner first and metaphysical believer second. Watch Richard Dawkins interview with Derren Brown. There Brown explains that there is more money to be made and celebrity presenting yourself a having real supernatural abilities. Presenting yourself as a performer of illusions and parlor tricks, doesn't pay as well.

dirtyhyde8 2 years ago
some people who claims they are atheists are actually just agnostics- they simply don't care whether there is god or not- these people can be persuaded to believe in god because they didn't really spend time convincing themselves strongly that god does not exist. atheists actively deny the existence of god- they are convinced. agnostics don't even bother exploring the question but are comfortable not believing until persuaded otherwise.

How so? Is atheism not just another belief system?
64amped 2 years ago
Atheism is a lack of belief in gods. That's it. Therefore, it is not a belief system. There are many belief systems atheists can actually ascribe to. Most people who think of atheists think of rationalists, skeptics, and secular humanists, but Scientology and Buddhism are actually atheist worldviews as well.
I consider myself a secular humanist, which basically means I use reason to develop my world view and my ethics, while rejecting a supernatural basis for morals and decision making.
ejstaats 2 years ago 5
ever thought about the word? a-theism.
theism: the belief in at least one deity.
invert theism and you have atheism, hence without a belief in any deity.
i would say it is more like the complete absence of a belief system, but it sure is a certain perception/conception of the world
williamtheconcreter 2 years ago 2
@64amped: It isn't. There are many facts that go against the need of any god to explain reality, while there is no definitive clue that there are any supernatural beings.
So, if you are atheist because your parents told you so, it is your belief system; but if you think and question rationally, you quite likely reach atheism (here a synonym for agnosticism, disbelief, secular humanism...).
flavioateo 2 years ago
To support the concept of atheism, but to deny the concept of "creationism" is absurd.
Both polar conclusions are simply beliefs based on faith. Neither hypothesis is empirically provable.
Therefore the true scientific approach would be agnosticism. I find most atheist usually hold a form of resentment for their experiences with religion, which is understandable. But what does that have to do with the existence of a supreme consciousness?
64amped 2 years ago
If you do not believe in god, any deity or supreme beings, but rely on the empirical world, you're an atheist in the sense that you consider utterly improbable that those thing exist.
They are there just as much as the tooth fairy, aether, or the invisible pink unicorn.
All else is useless speculation.
flavioateo 2 years ago
"If you do not believe in god, any deity or supreme beings, but rely on the empirical world, you're an atheist in the sense that you consider utterly improbable that those thing exist." - Inserting "empirical world" in that sentence is suggesting that there is a god or you rely on something else. An either or. You don't need to make any statement about any state of reality or not to be an atheist, if you do not believe in a god or deity then you are an atheist. Without any further comment!
TheSpankymonkey 2 years ago
Obviously one can label oneself as an atheist, but my point is they are no more rational than an evangelist. Both are simply polar opposites on an idea that is impossible to prove or disprove.
Both sides of the isle simply reflect one another in polarity. While both claim to hold superior knowledge or insight over the other side. The grand irony is both conclusions are based entirely in faith.
64amped 2 years ago
"Both are simply polar opposites on an idea that is impossible to prove or disprove." - No they are not. No matter how many times you keep thumping that idea of YOURS around it won't make it true. If i don't believe a theists claims i am an atheist. It is not an either or. They are not polar opposites and you are simply dishonest or at best stupid with your arguments. It takes no faith to not believe someone elses. It's a lack of it, IDIOT.
TheSpankymonkey 2 years ago
"While both claim to hold superior knowledge or insight over the other side" - So if you make a claim as a theist and i simply don't believe you. That makes me an atheist. To be honest i simply don't believe you, but theists felt that they needed a word to describe that. It happens to be atheist. I need to make no other claims about reality, i need to make no claims about knowledge to be an atheist. I simply don't believe. I think you need a strawman version of atheism to argue with tbh.
TheSpankymonkey 2 years ago
Agnosticism and atheism aren't mutually exclusive. You can be an agnostic atheist (which I am), or an agnostic theist. Agnosticism is an admission that as a human you are flawed and unable to truly know anything, especially things like religion and the supernatural which are unprovable and inherently unscientific.
Atheism is a belief in the lack of the supernatural, and I think due to the lack of evidence and incompatibility with science most rational people will at least doubt its existence.
sausagedogmcgee 2 years ago
"Both polar conclusions are simply beliefs based on faith. Neither hypothesis is empirically provable." - Not really. If someone tells me a crock of shit and i say i don't believe them then i don't expect some fucking moron to then start telling me i have yet another fucking belief system. My child told me he was an intergalactic warrior this morning, do i now have a new belief system? No, i simply don't fucking believe. Now get off your fucking bandwagon and grow up.

Bobstew68 3 years ago 4
I do think that these dreams derren related to her were never actually dreamt by her at all, or if they were, Derren suggested embellishments which she subconciously accepted.. (and to clarify on an earlier point, she became psychologically uncomfortable because swapping chairs was, for her, a psychological demotion, but because of her respect and awe of the person she thought he was, she accepted it and so became willingly submissive, so heightening the effect of any sublimminal persuasion.)
listenasthewindblows 3 years ago 4
Just look at the woman as she sit's down in 'Derren's' chair, she shows all the signs of being uncomfortable (more psychologically than physically)and i think this is a clever trick, because, the woman will take alot of psychological comfort from the belief that her personal and heartfelt dreams are preserved - and are not just (she hopes) meaningless brain nonsense.. and so, she may be alot more likely to [act emotionally and] accept&believe any 'false' memories derren may attempt to suggest.
listenasthewindblows 3 years ago 6
I think one of the key moments in convincing the woman of the dream machine's authenticity was the moment when derren asked to swap chairs.. initially, derren encouraged and supported her self aggrandizing as she sat in her own chair talking about her 'great successes' whilst derren acted impressed and completely receptive to what she was saying.. then, and the crucial moment, he swapped chairs, and in doing so, swapped psychological states of mind (he became 'great' and she became receptive)

jmcarvas 3 years ago
The technique is to put subconcious suggestions about what to draw into her head before she goes away to draw in the other room (and shout out a few more while she's there), so he can guess what she's thinking. People are far more open to suggestion than what is commonly believed. When people want to believe so strongly, then they will follow suggestions to confirm that belief.
