Completely off his rocker... in the best possible way. I think she had an orgasm halfway through the interview and then just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.
@Lee86Cr Brilliant - Yes I agree with Lee, look how she's flicking away with A4 piece of paper, and I thinks it's fair to say Tom had "had a few" (and good for him!)
pause and view frame by frame look at the amount of slit eye, teeth and lip morphing you see on tom baker he is most assuredly a reptillian shapeshifter
My impression of Tom's Doctor was he looked like a character out of Charles Dickens. Some of the female respondents here talk about him as though he's quite a hottie. He's not classically handsome; to me he looks like a cross between Harpo Marx and Jeff Goldblum. I saw the series as reruns on public television in the U.S., saw Colin Baker before I saw any of the other Doctors. I'm disappointed though that Tom didn't participate in the "5 Doctors" 20th anniversary story beyond stock footage.
I wasn't born when they were about but I think Tom and John Pertwee were the best as they had presence and authority and brought their own characters to the role. The modern ones all play the role much the same although I liked Tennant.
I'm possibly the only man in Europe who is actually twice in Madame Tussauds lol, maybe he had a couple of sips too much of whiskey before the interview
I know Tom baker played the doctor for yrs but i still wished he would have done it a few more years. At least he did some audio episodes after leaving the show.
I love that bit where the interviewer asks if he has any immediate plans, and Tom says "No, I'm open to offers" with that flirty grin at 4:16 or so. Oh Mr Baker, you're terrible!
@13bgg Ever figure I don't care for watching credits rolls? And that maybe they made a mistake in them? It's pretty obvious his name isn't Doctor Who even to the most casual of fans because he never calls himself that.
I actually like Colin Baker a little more than Tennant(I still love him and his lovely rambling... oh, and his nerd glasses! They're just like mine!) - But honestly, the Doctor has never ever been played by as bad actor. Some are just a little more awesome than others, but they're all awesome. But yes, Tom Baker, Chris Eccleston and Matt Smith. Each of them is made of pure, contracted awesome.
@Cluebert: He's in my Top 3 list too, álbeit in the second place between Eccleston (1) and Matt Smith (3)... But honestly, very few people who have really seen this show can NOT have Tom Baker in the Top 3.
This is very similar to what David named as a reason for leaving - that he wanted to leave while it was still fun... It's hard to believe that he smiles like this in 'real life', too. He was kind of the hottest Doctor ever, somewhat like a male Ayanami. Aww, I'm sure everyone made a big fuss back then about how Davison was going to suck - and then he showed them that he's awesome, too. Just like Matt Smith is pwning them all right now XD
looking at this, Tom Baker should have done just as well as SIr. Patrick Stewart and SIr. Ian McKellen in the Movie business, the man is class and should have been so much more famous than he is.
"Ha, he's dressed like David Tennant's Doctor... that's kinda spooky "
I know what you mean. I see a lot of parallels between Baker & Tennant, to be honest. They both revitalized the role and brought to it a great spirit of fun; they're both very popular Doctors, and they both clearly loved their experiences on the show.
I think she insulted him quite a few times without realising it, especially with the quip about serious acting almost implying that what he'd done was not as good.
He's always seemed a bit odd to me... Troughton, Pertwee, and Davison all seem such nice guys, quite down to earth, and easy to get along with (this is from what i've seen with them interacting together and with others in interviews, and also from reading about them).
But Tom Baker always seemed to be a little detached and in his own world, and never seemed too keen to remain associated with his role as the Doctor. I still think it's a great shame he's never agreed to partake in Big Finish audio
I suspect she's getting on his nerves a bit. It's like she doesn't give him a chance to finish answering any questions. That would tend to annoy ~me~ (grin)
Also, she's wearing "noisy" jewelry. That, combined with her frequent fidgeting, causes an almost constant "chinkling" sound. When the camera is only on Tom, you keep hearing it in the background. That would tend to annoy me as well.
I don't think so. Tom was pretty much an unknown & few viewers had seem him in ANYTHING else. Being the longest running Dr helped to typecast him. Tennant had already been seen in several successful series(Casnova,Blackpool) before WHO & he also had the sense to begin the transition into other roles while on the show(Hamlet). Also,I think audiences today are more able to accept actors in other roles.(Think Davison in The Braithwaites.)
@OpenMawProductions - I found him smarmy & humourless. His reincarnation (& I believe the actor himself) was also rudley dismissive about Peter Davison's Doctor. I was quite young at the time & resented him for it
I don't think Tom really wanted to leave, every year, he used to say "I'm getting a bit long in the tooth now, may give it up" The BBC would throw more money at him and he'd stay, then one year he did the "I'm getting a bit long in the tooth" speech and they just kept quiet
Tom was then, and still is, a complete nutter. Love him forever. I get the strange impression from watching this interview, that he didnt want to leave. Correct me if Im wrong.
That smile, that voice "I'm open to offers..." the guy is a legend. I love how after she asks something he pauses for 2seconds, stares at her, then speaks. complete nutter, but fantastic!
I understand why he left tho'. It must be artistically frustrating to do the same role, year in,year out. What artist would want to paint a vase of flowers everyday for the rest of his career? Actors want to try new things,it's only natural.
Seriously, who wouldn't watch Tom Baker's Doctor !! Everybody absolutely loved him and people still do. My first Doctor was Tom Baker. I first watched this show when it wasn't being made anymore.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but notice that he's wearing pinstripes quite like the tenth doctor's :P
Love Tom Baker, his last episode is airing on BBC Kids tonight here in Canada, so I'll be happy to finally see it, but sad to actually watch it happen
Tom Baker has a twinkle in his eyes and a voice to die for! He is my favorite of all of the doctos and I was really sad when he left. I was so pleased with his episodes were made available on DVD and when I watch them now, I still get a thrill!
I have to say, David really grew on me though. He's funny and really drew me in so to see him leaving is really sad. Especially without one last full season.
@treat2c: Well, He couldn't have kept the Job forever... At least Tom Baker was the one who played our favourite cosmic weirdo for the longest time ever... He's undoubtely one of the very best.
Poor him, he doesn't seem to be the interview kind of person, he looks all shy...
My impression of Tom in this interview is that he didnt want to leave the role. I firmly believe that the BBC hierarchy put pressure on John Nathan Turner to recast the role. Peter Davison was 29 going on 30 when he was cast. He was current and desirable from his role in All Creatures. You can tell from Tom's demeanour in this interview that he didn't want to go. I mean, he had no acting plans and made no bones about stating that fact.
Sad really considering that we don't seem to be able to hold on to a Doctor for too long these days before they want to move on, and i'm quite attached to David Tennant.
And here's one who seems really sad and forlorn to be leaving. makes me wonder whether it was his choice or whether he was told it was time for a new doctor. He always talks about how it was the happiest time in his life (then and now).
Tim Baker is great- I love him as both The Doctor and as Puddleglum (the grumpy sod, lol).
Was it just me, or did he not seem to keen on the interviewer? There seemed to be quite a bit of friction when the interviewee and interviewer usually get along great.
At this point, Tom genuinely didn`t know what he was going to do with his life after being the doctor and `oblivion` was all he could see ahead. And the interviewer was obviously clueless.
I agree. His doctor was so unique and eccentric, it was just brilliant. I have yet to see someone in the new series top the overall epicness of Tom Baker's doctor.
yeah, tom seems really full of himself here ...

3:03 Tom looks like he was insulted by her comment about going on to "serious" stage acting, lol.

Yes... That line certainly killed the look of lust I think I saw in his eyes!!

He always talks about how it was the happiest time in his life (then and now).
what a great Doctor he was!

You can tell he's been ill, he looks quite thin and tired in this clip.

He is a wonderful man, great stentorian voice, very clever too, he brought a lot to the Doctor Who role

Tom Baker best doctor ever :).

I agree. His doctor was so unique and eccentric, it was just brilliant. I have yet to see someone in the new series top the overall epicness of Tom Baker's doctor.
ladyxkikyou 3 years ago 5
yeah :) who would you say you like after Tom Baker as The Doctor like a 2nd.
