Johnny Marr actually used a Les Paul for most of his live shows with the Smiths.

Rickenbacker 330 was only used to play in the early gigs before the release of Meat is Murder.

This Charming Man wasn't even recorded with a ric, it was a Telecaster

nicely done. To the guy asking how you stop the notes from ringing, finger muting is how Johnny Marr and this guy do it, but if you find that tricky, play it as if you're playing the individual notes in a more lead guitar way if that makes sense. (not holding a shape basically.) Works for me.

okay i looked up F# tuning. i haven't tried it but this is what i found: F# tuning is F♯-A♯-C♯-F♯-C♯-F♯. and i have no idea how you learn to play this w/o playing by ear going from standard tuning to F#. maybe you have to watch this video 1 million times oh well. anyway thanks nicknoh for explaining about F# like Johnny Marr.

Recorded on a Tele but in the video he played a Ric. I think that Ric behind out would cop the sound a lot better than a Les Paul but nice playing regardless.

Thanks, I didn't use the capo because the guitar is a bit more freed up w/out it and that's just how J.Marr played, so i figured he's onto something if he's tuned up to F#. It's easier that's for sure.

Sounds nice on the Les Paul. It's a welcome change from hearing it on the Rickenbacker all the time. Not to say that the Rickenbacker is bad, but I've never heard it on any other type of guitar. And this one sounds pretty good.

For some reason i always have trouble getting to grips with any of Marr's guitar parts..

I've always found this song a pain because i don't like to use capos or alternate tunings..

I have no problem with things like Zeppelin or Hendrix though, i guess it's just a different approach & i should put more time & effort into it..

What tuning are you in?, you seem to be playing two frets lower than you should be, but it sounds in the right key.

tuning is in F#. instead of E,A,D,G,B,E it's F#,B,E,A,C#,F#. Just make sure you're guitar neck can handle the tuning. Thin neck guitars tend to bow back. So use one w/ a hefty neck.

I saw The smiths loads live in the 80's, if you close your eyes and listen to this it does sound remarkably like Marr live - beautiful.

I sometimes do play on the Rick, but i can't get that ringing on the bottom f# string as well as the les paul. Johnny uses various Gibson Les Pauls early and later on in the SMiths. Personally i'm just using the les paul because to get a clean sound out of it is somewhat unique when it's usually seen as a heavy metal or rock guitar w/ heavy distortion.
