There is no context here. The person could be on a break. Their duties aren't outlined. Maybe this person cleans up the area of their refuse and belongings and just leaves the other employee's disorganization alone. This is just cheap shots and totally inappropriate.
On the other hand... how often do you get a break that is long enough to whip out a portable DVD player/tv and watch something, and yet take that break at your work station. Breaks that long usually involve going out to lunch or something.
The fact that this person is at a booth that seems to be open with no apparent signs saying that it's closed makes me suspicious that they're on break.
Now, I can understand that working late shifts when there are few customers could mean you can get away with this, but it certainly isn't "professional" and doesn't give the impression of an increase in service after the increase in fair.
I'm a student finishing my second degree and I would love to get a job making as much as these people!
Also, you're stretching for defense here. Cleaning up after others isn't at issue, it's that they're catching up on their soaps while on the job.
First, these aren't professionals. Second, even if they were, there isn't enough information for me to make a judgement. Third, have you ever seen what the working conditions are at Google? Finally, posting a video isn't solving the problem. If you care enough to record it and post it, why not call the TTC or your City Councillor and have a discussion about it. Much more effective and much more empathic. This is just vindictive, childish 'got you' behaviour.
I don't think anyone fancies them to be professionals in the sense of doctors or lawyers or accountants or what ever, but rather that we expect a level of "professionalism." It's expected in every job you can name. Someone serving you fries at McD's isn't a professional, but they're expected to look 'professional' and act in a certain way. Why should TTC workers be exempt from this work ethos that exists everywhere else?

It's video of the person in their place of work, not the break room, but at their station, watching TV and getting nothing done when there are other things that the person could surely be doing. So what if they didn't make the mess, it's there, they're there... get on it. Act professional, damn it!
I think posting video DEFINITELY solves the problem a bit. How many complaints do you think the TTC receives? I'd guess a lot. But a few videos of what's going on and all of a sudden we see action!

Would anyone chastise a truckdriver for listening to a radio while working? As long as watching that movie didn't interfer with that worker's job, ie. not having coins prepared for change, or having riders wait until the movie finishes, then what is the problem? Because he (or she, can't tell) is on the clock, even in downtime they have to just sit there? I guess reading the newspaper is out of the question as well. How dehumanizing.
The fare collector is responsable for the safety of people on the platform via the TV (the one she isnt watching). Odds are she is a lazy suburbanite who doesnt live here. If she did, then she might be concernd that people she knows are walking those platforms unattended

First, I don't know what is specified in this worker's job description. If keeping the office clean and organized to this and that criteria, then the worker is obviously not meeting what is expected in terms of performance and should be disciplined accordingly. But often times people's personal office space is policed by the people themselves. So if there is nothing specified in this person's job description that says that office has to be clean, it is up to the individual whether to keep it...
clean or not. I personally cannot stand living and working in unkempt environments, so that office would be spotless, whether or not it was specified in my job description. Again, you wouldn't chastize a truckdriver, or a contracter, or a business owner for harbouring unclean, disorganized trucks or offices, respectively. Or here is an interesting example: what about someone who is independently wealthy, whether inheriting the money or otherwise, and simply sits on the money...
and is more of a slob then you can imagine. Yet this person could be pulling in more than $100,000/year in interest alone. Should we be mad at this person for not 'working'? Don't fret, my profane language laden, friends. Tacit skillsets such as the onus of tidying a workspace are rewarded in society. What I am advocating for is free market capitalism, with state intervention and a baseline social safety net. This is so that even the most un-entrepreneurial workers are taken care.
What is important is that people have that baseline access to capital in order to reproduce themselves, and to, should they decide to do so, have access to ascend into the upper escleon socioeconomically, vis-a-vis the 'working for your money' ethic some of you seem to advocate.
Empty the garbage can? Organise the desk? Look around that office, tool. Let's pretend you're not a union douchebag yourself for a second and try to see this through the eyes of someone who works for their money.
He could be watching the security feed video to make sure people are not in danger, tidy up the joint... pretend to put on a professional sort of face to everything. No? I personally like to have a nice, clean living and working area, so I put in the domestic non-paid time of tidying up. But not everyone is the same way. The solution? Integrate these responsibilites into the job description.
Then when a worker has not fulfilled his job responsibilities per policy then they can be dealt with objectively in an disciplinary manner. As a self-interested actor why would I perform activities beyond my job description and thus not required by policy and not bringing about any benefits to myself?
As for comparisons to McDonalds, how about comparisons to working conditions in third world factories? Earning however many cents per hour and expected to work 14 hour days. Imagine if that was the standard you were advocating for? That is stupid, unnecessary and exploitative of workers. Work should never be compared to another job in terms of what you expected to do in relationship to time.
If I, as a worker, can complete the same job in half the time some of the people on this forum would advocate that 'working for money' would mean that despite meeting your production quota you should be expected to stand on guard for no other reason other than you are getting paid. What am I getting paid for? Completing a job. Again, what is required of you should be specified in your job description.
If you were my employee you'd be fired right away. It's not only about how fast one can accomplish a task, but also about level of professionalism and integrity. We are not working in a communist system. As for this TTC employee, her job is to pay attention to what's going on in the station and serve customers. Both of which she's ignoring to do.

TTC collectors who make over $100,000+ is mostly overtime work. This is where the media refuses to disclose it. If you're outraged at this salary then look at how many members of TTC management make over $100,000, or sometimes even over $200,000+

FYI that collector was 1 of 4 collectors in that sunshine list, & the least of those 4. He was the only 1 who went public though. And his story does not pass the stink test. There is no context here. The person could be on a break. Their duties aren't outlined. Maybe this person cleans up the area of their refuse and belongings and just leaves the other employee's disorganization alone. This is just cheap shots and totally inappropriate.

On the other hand... how often do you get a break that is long enough to whip out a portable DVD player/tv and watch something, and yet take that break at your work station. Breaks that long usually involve going out to lunch or something.
The fact that this person is at a booth that seems to be open with no apparent signs saying that it's closed makes me suspicious that they're on break.

Now, I can understand that working late shifts when there are few customers could mean you can get away with this, but it certainly isn't "professional" and doesn't give the impression of an increase in service after the increase in fair.
I'm a student finishing my second degree and I would love to get a job making as much as these people!
Also, you're stretching for defense here. Cleaning up after others isn't at issue, it's that they're catching up on their soaps while on the job.

First, these aren't professionals. Second, even if they were, there isn't enough information for me to make a judgement. Third, have you ever seen what the working conditions are at Google? Finally, posting a video isn't solving the problem. If you care enough to record it and post it, why not call the TTC or your City Councillor and have a discussion about it. Much more effective and much more empathic. This is just vindictive, childish 'got you' behaviour.

I don't think anyone fancies them to be professionals in the sense of doctors or lawyers or accountants or what ever, but rather that we expect a level of "professionalism." It's expected in every job you can name. Someone serving you fries at McD's isn't a professional, but they're expected to look 'professional' and act in a certain way. Why should TTC workers be exempt from this work ethos that exists everywhere else?
And I'm not complaining about the state of the office, but what's going on

It's video of the person in their place of work, not the break room, but at their station, watching TV and getting nothing done when there are other things that the person could surely be doing. So what if they didn't make the mess, it's there, they're there... get on it. Act professional, damn it!
I think posting video DEFINITELY solves the problem a bit. How many complaints do you think the TTC receives? I'd guess a lot. But a few videos of what's going on and all of a sudden we see action!

Quite clearly, you couldn't be more wrong about this and whether or not it helps. Maybe it doesn't make the TTC workers feel good about themselves or want to do a better job, but the complaint is they aren't doing a good job to begin with, so maybe what's required is for people to embarrass management and get them to finally do something instead of just ignoring any number of quiet complaints that the public doesn't really hear about.
What would you suggest? Acceptance of the status quo?

Would anyone chastise a truckdriver for listening to a radio while working? As long as watching that movie didn't interfer with that worker's job, ie. not having coins prepared for change, or having riders wait until the movie finishes, then what is the problem? Because he (or she, can't tell) is on the clock, even in downtime they have to just sit there? I guess reading the newspaper is out of the question as well. How dehumanizing.

The fare collector is responsable for the safety of people on the platform via the TV (the one she isnt watching). Odds are she is a lazy suburbanite who doesnt live here. If she did, then she might be concernd that people she knows are walking those platforms unattended

First, I don't know what is specified in this worker's job description. If keeping the office clean and organized to this and that criteria, then the worker is obviously not meeting what is expected in terms of performance and should be disciplined accordingly. But often times people's personal office space is policed by the people themselves. So if there is nothing specified in this person's job description that says that office has to be clean, it is up to the individual whether to keep it...

Again, you wouldn't chastize a truckdriver, or a contracter, or a business owner for harbouring unclean, disorganized trucks or offices, respectively. Or here is an interesting example: what about someone who is independently wealthy, whether inheriting the money or otherwise, and simply sits on the money...

What I am advocating for is free market capitalism, with state intervention and a baseline social safety net. This is so that even the most un-entrepreneurial workers are taken care.

He could be watching the security feed video to make sure people are not in danger, tidy up the joint... pretend to put on a professional sort of face to everything. No? Think about what a McDonald's employee is expected to do while they have no customers. I assure you, they'd be fired for doing that.
Not to mention, the qualifications needed for TTC work and McDonalds work is about the same... and yet they get paid ridiculously well! I think we're entitled to expect more.

Emptying the garbage, organising your work space, monitoring the security feed, acting 'professional'; these are all fine ideas. But you should not act like this is an environment where entrepeneurship is going to flourish. I personally like to have a nice, clean living and working area, so I put in the domestic non-paid time of tidying up. But not everyone is the same way. The solution? Integrate these responsibilites into the job description.

As for comparisons to McDonalds, how about comparisons to working conditions in third world factories? Earning however many cents per hour and expected to work 14 hour days. FYI that collector was 1 of 4 collectors in that sunshine list, & the least of those 4. He was the only 1 who went public though. And his story does not pass the stink test. Everyone at the ATU113 knows that Maintenance are a bunch of 'dogf**kers', from the jockies who sleep in the streetcars in the yard, to the guys who punch out for each other & to these goons in the booths.
