I really doubt that Matsuyama knows English well enough. That's why I thought about Johnny Depp as L. I think, he'd do quite a nice job, acting as an excentric, superintelligent detective.

As for Zac Efron, I'm rather sure he'd play Kira the way he should. He's a professional actor after all. I'm convinced he didn't want to play that sissy in the HSM series, but, seriously, look at him go, as though his whole live was that creepy musical.

The thing is with Light being played by Zac Efron, if all goes well and he acts just right as Light, then he'll gain a lot of respect and lose the 'goodie little pretty boy' image (maybe), but if things DON'T go well, then he might as well just say good bye to his self-esteem... ^w^

His resemblance to Light Yagami is uncanny, so I actually DO want to see him succeed in depicting the character properly.
