His performance in Scarface was perfect because the story, setting, color scheme, camera movements, and characters were intentionally over the top in a, like Pacino said, an "operatic" way. Characters can't be dull and mono-tone in this type of film, they must explode and foam at the mouth. See Jack Nicholson in the Shining. Same type of situation. Those critics know nothing about acting, directing, or film. Only Roger Ebert saw what the film really was back then.
