I thought FLCL made perfect sense. They just don't hold you by the hand and lead you through it. The final scene of one of the most wonderfull anime ever made. In just six episodes Gainax achieved more with this anime than most studios can with 25 episodes. True artistic genius is at work here and anyone who wants to write animation stories should watch this over and over to learn how to write a decent story.

The only reason this is confusing is because Westerners don't get all of the references to Japanese culture, literature, and TV. The Simpsons or South Park is confusing to the Japanese in the same way. They know it's funny and whacky, but it doesn't quite connect with Japanese audiences the way it does with us.
Example: When Homer sings "Guess I forgot to put the fog lights in"(search it) it's hilarious to Americans because it's the Sugar Crisp jingle but a foreigner would be like "wtf?"

It was meant to be an enjoyable representation of a "Coming of Age" story. It succeeded IMO. Maybe it was too cryptic for -some- people ... like you /cough

For instance, to me this was a story about personal growth, about love, and loss. thats all. even with all that weird (but awesome) they threw in there. so don't try to focus on how u think it should have went, but what u feel from it.
@oocotter You have to analyze it on a deeper level. There are times where it's random just to be random, but a lot of it is symbolism. If you're attentive enough to catch it, then it's a much better anime.
It gets more enjoyable every time I watch it, I keep catching things that I didn't see the first few times. The first time I watched FLCL I was about 8 years old, so it made no sense to me. Now I'm 17, and having taken an AP Psychology class, I can see what I couldn't before.
