Well ! I used to own 2 SMs, that was a flying saucer on her time but frankly
the marriage of 70's Citroen high technology coupled with a poor construction and a downgraded Maserati engine equipped with fragile chains was a nightmare. Can you imagine you have to check chains and synchronize the carburettors every 5,000 kms. I gave up for a DS23 Ie.
Nice to see a Citroen in the USA lol. SM's, like the DS are just incredible cars. Not actually heard an SM in action before and it's fantastic, a bit more growly than most V6's (has it got a different firing order?). I believe that this V6 was unique to the SM. The V6 24v engine used in more modern Citroens like the Xantia, XM and the like was a completely different PSA design. Hope this info helps.
citroen ws from the 30's up to the mid 70's the laboratory of the french art of mechanics and design , remember that the Sm was at it's time one of the most Kg/Hp powefull car in the world , it was able to reach over 250KM/PH on the french motorway and was used as motorway patrol car the catch the others BMW , mercedes and other english sports cars
Thanks for the info that the SM engine was also used in the Merak. It was tuned to a higher horsepower I think. This week I have started the process of tidying up my Audi GT Coupe "Special Build". Original color Tornado Red urethane will make it shine again.
Denis, I enjoyed the ride and the vintage '73 sounds. Did Maserati design the V6 specifically for the SM? Don't recall it being used in any Maserati car. Closest thing I have to it is an 1987 1/2 Audi Coupe Special Build.
@JeterCM ...the common legend is that Maserati took a V-8 design, chopped off two cyclinders, and counterbalanced the camshaft to make it work...that's why the angle is so unusual for a v-6. Whether or not it's true is conjecture. Still, the engine noise upon strong acceration is PURE MUSIC. It's no rocket, but as a grand tourer, it's incomparable.
@MrVielanda The 1973 model or serial numbers starting with SD were 3 liter. This is SD 0824. The 3 liter was on all SM sent to this country with Automatic or 5 Speed in 1973
What are all those toilet floats doing in the engine bay?? Kidding! Awesome car! :)

I don't know how it is in the rest of the country (US) but it seems, 4 out of 5 times, if you see an SM, it's this metallic brown colour. Odd.

As i remeber it, the engine is a Maserati V8. Citroen cut of 2 cyl for space and weight...

Citroen. You've got to love it or hate it. There's no way of being a regular driver when you own one.

Absolutely beautiful! Love the sound of that engine. Brings back memories of a ride I had in one back in high school around '70.

Good color for the SM as well.
