Sco is a great guitar player, but stepping into the ring with Herbie and Brecker is a suicide mission for any guitar player. Maybe Gambale or Holdsworth would have a chance...

That's the problem...he phrases like a guitar player. That musical situation requires someone who can phrase like a great keyboard, alto, or tenor player. There's a spot at 3:08 rises to the challenge...but not for long. Get yourself some Joe Henderson, Joe Farrell, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.

i listen to all of these guys, and what i meant with scofield is that at least he has a tone and personality in his playing . . . and actually his phrasing is unique - it's doesn't even sound like a guitar but more like a tenor. he beats holdsworth by miles!!! freddie and woody are some great master phrasers - i put SCO right up there with them.

forget him phrasing like a guitarist or a saxophonist. he's a singer. his tone and phraseology is just mind-blowing - something neither holdsworth nor gambale posses.

I can't think of anyone other than Sco fitting this group. It's a Jazz take on contemporary tunes, Scofield is one of the few guitarists who clearly plays with the history of both Jazz and Contemporary Guitar in his music. Imagine substituting Metheny or Holdsworth or even Rosenwinkel and it would sound out of place or too dominant. Metheny probably isn't groovy enough, Kurt plays more like a pianist. And the fusion guys just don't swing, which is fine, but isn't what this group was about.

Not a fan of Gambale, watching Sco play makes you realise how much Frank is lacking! Saw him live last weekend for the second time and was really disappointed. Brainless "shred".

holdsworth would die in this situation. his articulation and tone are totally unsuited to this. he's an 80's, outdated, metal guitarist.

scofield's articulation is so individual, modern and his melodic awareness is light years ahead of both of them put together. gambale is less than a schoolboy next to sco... and sco's harmonic awareness is undoubtedly ahead of brecker... eg the dissonance at 3:50

I'm the biggest Sco fan in the known universe , but although this is brilliant individual playing, as a group it ain't happenin' ...

Herbie ain't layin' down the right harmonic stuff for Sco , and John's goin' off on his own like it was Goldings or somebody more familiar comping ...

Holland is fine .. but you can't have two jazz legends like Sco & Herbie at odds harmonically & still get true synnergy and synchronicity.

No biggie. Jazz all-star congregations frequently miss the mark.

This group was a failure. An all star band for which Scofield was invited but he really had no place in it; it was all Hancock and Metheny people. A commercial endeavour resulting in a boring concert by some of the greatest musicians of the time.
