First song to scare me half to death....I was just a young boy and I heard this and never stopped loving Del......this and Handy Man are in my top 20 singles of all time.....
I bought this record when I was 15 and as much as I liked Del his best recordings were behing him how could they not be? with classics like Runaway, Little Town Flirt etc. A great talent it's too bad he lost his life the way he did He'll always be remembered
@lilmisscarriage messy yes but quick and painless and cyanide is not always so easy to come by It might have been the most viable way at hand I hope he did he out of doors especially if he did not live alone Tragic as they say the good die young or at least reasonalby young
He wrote "Stranger in Town" and "Keep Searchin" during the time that "The Fugitive" was a hit on Tuesday nights on ABC 1963-1967). I wonder if the series had to do with these songs. Running from town to town like Dr. Richard Kimble.
Wow, what a performance with so many background vocals....for 1965! Just a great song by one of the greatest singers of the last century. Del should have been in the Hall Of Fame in his lifetime, not after.
"Stranger In Town" is such a great and deep song, filled with paranoia and desperation. Del's the greatest, this should have been a Top 10 record, not Top 30. The camera angles are friggin' great! Love it! Just my cop it!
Actually, if you look at the lyrics of Runaway, Keep Searchin', and Stranger in Town, it wouldn't be hard to envision it as the thoughts of an obsessed stalker who eventually kidnaps his prey. There is no evidence that the girl is agreeable to him at all, in fact, like many Del Shannon penned songs, she isn't even assigned a name! (It doesn't even matter in Hats Off to Larry)
@delshannonnetwork I sure remember early 1965 as being very desperate; I was 14 or 15 and always in trouble and this song and something or other by the Shangri-Las was always on the radio. Crazy desperate time.
Rarities like this are why I hang out on YouTube. Live performances from this era are hard to come by. I'd sure like to know where this one was filmed.
Breathtaking perfomance considering when it was filmed. I love the set and lighting too.

So the stranger in town is a private investigator after a stalker named del.
spacepatrolman 2 years ago
You got it! Hard to prove otherwise based on the lyrics. Oh, the stalker MIGHT be named Charlie.
sittnick1 2 years ago
He wrote songs working in a carpet store sitting on a pile of carpets [another stalker guy named charlie wrote songs with the beach boys ].

My favorite Del Shannon song.

I love the way he's using so many backup vocals, and uses his own voice to fill in for the miss horn. I hear a piano, but don't see it.
Part of this was shown on a Good Morning America clip in the mid 80's.

Not only is this a beautiful performance by Del the different angle shots are genius!

This is actually live and not lip-synched. What a great performance and a great loss to the music world. Does anyone know what show this from?
