Nice vid, I noticed you put all your drum samples on the rack. I seperate my drums into impulse for better eq and mastering, but is this really necessary?
@Discotreatz Drum Racks are actually far superior to Impulses. Impulse was designed as a very simple drum sampler before Drum Racks were invented. It's like the diff between Simpler and Sampler in Live. You get better EQing within Drum Racks because you can insert any EQ, an EQ8 or a third party EQ into the chain. You can also layer sounds into Multis and set up internal Return Tracks to bus to. Very powerful. Check them out!
Hi, Hope Vespers or someone can help, when I'm auditioning samples say a kick drum and find the one that sounds awesome, I drag it into the drum rack and then it sounds like half volume and not as awesome, I tried turning the volume up where it says -12db but when I set it to 0db it's louder but still sounds weak or different how can I get it so the sample is unchanged when I drag it into the drum rack, hope it's not just me, Oh I been using ableton for 3 weeks so sorry if it's a dumb question.
@blackphil666 Simpler automatically starts up with the Velocity sensitivity set to 0%, which is nice if you have a midi pattern with the velocity all the way up and accidentally load in a sample that's really loud. Just turn the velocity up to 100% and it should sound normal.
how did you get drumrack to pickup velocity. whenever i have used drum rack in the past i've had to manually go into the sample/sampler and set the vel (next to spread) to 100%. i've been wondering this since the first day i used ableton. please help i want velocity without having to do this run around.
cheers to vespers! =) barely found about about your tutorials and I must say they're really helpful and I feel that that they really apply to me. Thanx man.
How did you come up with such a groovy beat? I even have trouble coming up with solid sounding drums! Are those MIDI drum sounds coming from Ableton's drum patters? Or are they from a third party of sample sounds?
@yenrac17 Hey mate. It's actually not that hard. I'm using all third party samples, layered up in Drum Racks. Check out my other tutorials for examples.
@velmighty Be default, Drum Racks have no velocity to volume sensitivity (dumb I know). You have to change that in the simplers inside the drum rack by increasing the vel > vol parameter. Then velocity will affect volume. Cheers!
@DJVespers ok its working, can u tell me how to make defoult simpler preset to drum rack with different velocity? its always -12db, even if i try to made my preset.
@velmighty You don't want to change that. It's a good thing, for when you're layering samples it keeps the overall amplitude under control. I'd reduce the volumes of your other tracks to match. Cheers!
Another great way to create dynamics and keep the listener interested is to remove elements. For example you might remove everything except for a few percussive elements which have a delay/reverb on the chain for a bar or two and then bring back in the kicks for a bar and then snares - so on and so forth.
I think what would help many people just getting into producing/production is to learn to focus on the space in between; let elements breathe. ;)
@oOoInStInCtoOo No real method to it. I just mess around in the midi editor. I like leaving the monitor icon active to hear sounds as I move them, sometimes that inspires interesting edits.
@DJVespers Just curious on time saving shortcuts/tips would you be able make a list or video of all your most useful shortcuts? or maybe you already have a video like that, I just haven't searched for it yet....anyways it would be really nice!
@prozachenri Fair comment, it's not focused on how to use drum racks, but it certainly has drum racks in it and discusses how to program using them with midi.
Thank you for this great tutorial. Some of your more advanced followers seem to be disappointed, but for those of us that are new to beat making in Ableton, this was amazing! I haven't checked yet, but hopefully you have a video on creating a drum kit. If not, can you please consider creating one for us newbies?
@orfeuz Thanks mate. There are lots of beginners out there who need help with the basics too. I want to help everyone out, especially now that I'm a certified trainer. Also, this technique has helped me out a lot to write beats faster and I've been writing for 7 years. Cheers!

Hey man dunno why but tried that roll with the kick drum and it didnt change the volume when i drew in the velocity curve. Any ideas?
aaaaron22 1 year ago
@aaaaron22 Yep, you have to set the Simpler's Vel - Vol % to max. Silly it doesn't map by default that way.
