  • loves the jjcale/magnolia

  • "one of the most beautifull song JJ Cale ever wrote" as Paul Cotton said

  • Wonderful Sound .. Love u jj

  • Like J.J. Cale's own versions of this song the best. Very gentle, subtle, melodic, and minimal.

  • Saw him at the Saddle Rack - in front of an audience of maybe 50 people in the mid 80's. In the middle of the set he called Neil Young up from the audience and played a couple of songs with him.

  • @MrUtubePete OMG i bet that was awesome.......i saw him play here in Atlanta the summer of 2004........life changing!!!!!

  • @MrUtubePete OMG! That must have been awesome!

  • one day without JJCale on stage is a day too long without true art and some moving lyrics - what has happened to music and where is the soul and feeling.

thank you jj for making this world a better place

  • LOVE ME SOME JJ God Bless you thanks for all the wonderful songs thru the years!!!

  • No question about it, Poco's version is so much better and has so much more feeling to it.

  • @IndependentImages I've always liked Poco's version too; it's "pretty". But no one sings it with more feeling than JJ Cale. After all.... he did write the song.

  • @IndependentImages Ok.... I stand corrected.... I just listened to a live version by Poco... it was way better....

  • Anyone have a recording of Gus Hardin singing this song? The ultimate version...

  • I just watched POCO'S live version POCO wins hands down!!! the surfer1974

  • JJ at his best....

  • Love this!

  • this guys reminds me of eric compton

  • @LDZPLEN you probably mean Eric Clapton, and that's normal since Clapton made a lot of covers of J.J.Cale.

  • Doesn't get much better..

  • Comment removed

  • I'll give Cale credit for writing such a beautiful song, but for me the definitive version is Poco's, with Rusty Young's gorgeous steel playing.

  • @bargemule LARP much?

  • @tphillips68 had to look up LARP. no, not at all. too old apparently.

  • This song brings back such sweet memories

  • Excellent song!

  • I really don't think musicmaking gets any better than this; the quality of the musicians is unbelievable.

  • Poco version is good but the studio version of this song by JJ Cale is brethtaking, I have been listening to his music since I was 19 and most of my generation don't care or know him but he is the ultimate cool and he is brilliant far better than Eric Clapton who has done a lot of his music and copy his style.

  • His music has been on my stereo since 1979(?): I was on the local road crew in Memphis at the Fairgrounds, where he was playing. I met him when I ran cable before the performance; I just asked him how much he needed. When they started playing, I was MESMERISED! I also got to see Christine Lakeland for the first time - what an memory - I'll never forget it.

  • Man, if he had only ever written this, he'd be home free (the album cut's still the classic though.)

  • wonderfull

  • Wanna check out something cool.. check the 'hold on' vid on my channel.. P

  • Bought his album with the Panda on the front, in Rockville Iceland in 1973...kept playing it till one of my old girlfriend stole it...funny.... I still like J.J. Cale! Her? nothing there to like!!!

  • who wrote this song?? poco or this guy??

  • @randypipper92, jj Cale wrote it. Poco breathed life into it. Poco did several Cale covers (also Cajun Moon).

  • @nomoslogos I wouldn't say Poco breathed life into it as he slowed it down to a crawling pace. My own fave version is from the Delta Blues.

  • @boru1982 roger that.

  • Beautiful song,Please check out the cover in my videos.

  • Whippoorwill's singing

    Soft summer breeze

Makes me think of my baby

I left down in New Orleans.....

    cale man cale coolness personified.

  • not as good as off naturally, but boy, what a fine trak

  • He made "Lounge Music" long before this style was created

  • Fantastic song. It's almost bizarre to me that Cale handles it so gingerly, so one-handedly, and can't seem to wrap his soul, voice and emotion around it the way Poco did, and everyone that's ever heard Poco's cover is so totally drawn in to it that it's like we wrote it ourselves...and Cale wrote it ?

  • Лепа песма.

  • One of my all time favorites.

  • Still rocking'on....

  • perfect!

  • I played tenor sax to Magnolia many times not on this video.Personally I like my version much more.

  • fascinated by his music all my life a wizzard of cool although his live appearances are a bit far from his immaculate studio work.

  • THis song is something to feel and think about People ...

  • "you're the best I ever had" has such a final, sad ring to it...like there's no chance of that kind of love in the future. For a long time, I have thought of this as the saddest song I know. If I want to cry, I just have to think of it.

But, this, seeing JJ and hearing this deep, complex different version is so incredible. Still sad and beautiful.

  • Nice thought-provoking post.

I reckon he has lived well and he looks back and sees that time with her and celebrates the sheer beauty of being there,of it all.The fruits of life lived well and in grace with another.Time moves on.

We have to let go.Beauty is all around us all the time.

The soporifics of the mind are a needless consolation.

  • yer right bro, makes me think of the love i lost and all, but if I really fancy a bleat I listen to Roy Harper singing 'another day'

    have a listen

  • Thanks to Brummbaer50 for sharing this great Video. I have enjoyed this wonderful music.

    best wishes from germany

  • Beautiful, casual, steel-slide grace - you can't do better than this

  • that's too good

  • JJ sings with such emotion and sole

  • wow

  • this song puts chills in my spine. rock on JJ!!

  • god you cant be human if this song doesnt make you feel raw emotion

  • JJ you did it again, you always do. something about this does it for me. it just does it. ooh yeah i just wanna sway in the wind and feel it go through me, become me, i am jj you know? shit and the saxyphone oooo yea!

  • What a fine song...every time I hear it my hair stands on end

  • @marlequina ........agreed !!!!!!

  • @marlequina I agree it's a great song and jj does it well but POCO's live version gets my vote!!! thesurfer1974

  • what a track..... can't believe i've only just discovered this guy. absolute legend

  • Someone put me onto him about ten years ago. I love it when you discover new artists. Thats the great thing about music xxx

  • I like the Jai version better, but I gotta give props to the original. This is a damn good song.

  • Huh. I've been around long enough to know JJ Cale is no musical light weight, but truthfully, Poco's rendition of this is waaaay better.

The best thing about this was the saxophone.

    Pathetic. It almost sounds karoke.

  • Whippoorwill's singing Soft summer breeze Makes me think of my baby I left down in New Orleans I left down in New Orleans Magnolia, you sweet thing You're driving me mad Got to get back to you, babe You're the best I ever had You're the best I ever had You whisper Good morning So gently in my ear I'm coming home to you, babe I'll soon be there I'll soon be there J. J. Cale
  • One of Oklahoma's own. Great music writer/singer. Love Ya JJ!

  • My favorite JJ CALE SONG. OH my.... the dreams I have to this song

  • well ,,i think the best version i have heard is from a great band from london who play at the bridge house 2 called rdb

  • noting beats the original on the record for feeling!

  • You're the best I've ever had, yes you are...

  • Beautiful simple piece of music... Brilliant

  • Love this song JJ cale seems to sing it from the heart

  • one of the best songs ever written. compare it to any other song out there, it stands up ....

  • ok .

  • Love this tune,Brings back sweet painful memory.

I think most ppl like songs that they can relate too.

Cale is under rated?Just remember who covered his songs>Clapton-------Santana.

    Love ya JJ.

  • Still believe that Jose Feliciano owns this song, start to finish. JJ just talks through it, what a shame.

  • I hate that recently fashionable 'owns' thing - if you think someone else does the best version then say just that! I agree that he seems to be talking through it here, but the original recording is wonderful.

  • Been listening on and off to this song now for the last 35 years, and I still love listening to it to this day. JJ.. Underated....but for me...one of the "Best"

  • Sure wrote some great songs.

  • Cale is great !!!!!!!!!

  • bravel2

The most beautiful song for sad days

  • So good so good. You can't compare this to the Poco version cause the song is performed in whole different way and scale in this very very cool JJ Cale version

  • maybe because he wrote the song???!!!

  • i love this song so much. my mom used to play this to me when i was really little.

  • Sorry JJ. The Poco/Paul Cotton rendition is better. Thanks for writing the song.

  • On this version I agree, but J.J.'s studio version is better than the one you speak of and this one too. Just my opinion though.

  • The song is so simple, its only 4 chords on the guitar. Yet it's presented with such ease and elegance that it's damn near hypnotic. And then there are the lyrics. The feeling of longing is as universal as it gets. We've all been there but to often we let our day to day get it in the way. We are all very fortunate that JJ Cale captures and channels that kind of emotion for us all. A shot of JJ's Magnolia helps to heal the sprite if only for a little while.

  • What a great song, A true talent that is what he is. Thank You J.J. Cale

  • i hear this guy covered a song called cocaine written by eric clapton. it wasn't as good as the original...

only joking, JJ's the man, and this is one of the most heartbreakingly sweet songs ever. y hasn't he been inducted into the hall of fame yet??!

  • people don't know about him. One of the best musicians and yet people still think that Eric Clapton wrote cocaine... :P

  • and don't forget after midnight. i know clapton credits him every chance he gets. i really hope he isn't dead and gone by the time people recognise him as such an innovater and a great songwriter and performer.

  • This guy is a legend, his music means as much for music as for example Bob Marley's reggae. I ask myself this question many times: Why is this guy not so famous? I think it's because of his personality, he doesn't like to be in the spotlights. The man is the most relax and shy person I know. Huge hits like after midnight and cocaine are songs the whole world knows, but J.J. Cale??? Who the hell is that?? Maybe it's for the best this way.. I don't know...

  • not famous???..well probably for the masses that buy madonna or justin timber..shit..anyway better like this ...let's keep him as the hidden pearl that's'shinin just for us fans of him.

  • fuck yeah!

  • Q: Mr. Clapton: who do you want to be?

    A: J.J. Cale

He never ran after fame or money, but he allways seems to be so comfartabel with his life.

Everyone who loves this music should get the "to Tulsa and back" film from Jörg Bundschuh, you'll love it, I promise! ;o)

  • Easily one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • JJ Cale Is the one of the best song writers of our time.He is Mr Mellow

  • How can you say that? This is one of the mellowest songs I've ever heard.

  • wow!

  • I will always love this song. Although JJ wrote this, I like Pat Travers's version. i play it too on sax. Thanks guys!

  • this is my namiing song, my self-name is Magnolia...Sweet Magnolia...heard this in south carolina so long ago...if you have never heard a whiporwill, or smelled a magnolia tree, you dont know what you are missing

  • I saw the movie, does that count? Guess not.

  • what movie is that?

  • Steel Magnolias. See, I told you it didn't count.

  • oh i see what you did there. lame bwahaha

  • Another GREAT "OKIE" LOL He is a great lyrisist ,composer and singer. Has wrote many songs for others whom have made his songs popular.

  • i wish he would tour again....blessed to have seen him live at the back in 2004.........

  • you were the best i ever had............

  • I like this man, his grooves. I heard Milica Ilic cover this, beautiful version just on guitar, though she's a classical guitarist!

  • this song is why my nickname is sweet magnolia, am so happy to hear it again, thanks

  • man, makes me shiver...

  • BUDEFUL

  • I don't recall a sax in the studio version from his Special Edition LP. It really works well in this live version. Thx for posting.

  • When I lived in Nashille, JJ Cale was around town a lot.

I'm not sure if he lived there or just hung out with other musicians. I had a friend that sat next to him at a bar one night. Totally cool!

  • I love JJ cale, and I have done since 1973!

I don't know who that crowd are, but they are morons...shouting and whistling...so rude. People don't realise that the artist will not play so well if they are put off!

  • true

  • i throw a bullshit card on that call. you must be from the north or something. we southerners definitely show our appreciation loudly. i've gone to a few shows at bb king's in nyc, and it was like being at a wake...geez...take the sticks out of your behinds.

  • lol from saying you are from the south it makes sense.

and its completely retarded to shout in a bb kings show, people actually want to LISTEN to whats being played.

  • ...oh, please...

it's a LIVE SHOW, not a DVD in your living room.

  • so if your just going to shout how amazing the guy is and woot and holler the entire time, why dont you do it when you dont incur on others want to listen.

  • i'll try not to attend the next time he plays at the nursing home where you reside...

  • so theres something wrong with me because i dont like it when so many people are shouting its hard to hear the music - the very reason I went to the concert?

  • Loved the original version. Didn't care for Beck's. Like this one just fine too.

  • good to hear another version.....

    JJ.. you personify cool...

  • This is great, I am a big fan of beck so I heard his cover first, but I like this a lot, it is different, but still good! I guess I just like the slower more drawn out version that Beck sings

  • Have you checked out Cale's original? It actually sounds very different to this, and is beautiful too.

  • jj ay iyakins

  • a master of song trully a man who's infuence in the music field is under appreciated

  • JJ's the Man!

    thx for posting

  • JJ Cale is so sexy!

  • the album version of this sweet song is much better

  • sweet

  • HiNiceVideo!

    ThankYou!

  • Yhee!IGetMovin'JJ!
