Wow! I've heard this version before, but the recording was so degraded you could barely understand the lyrics. Many thanks for tracking down one with such good audio!
Although Paul Robeson's enthusiastic support for Joseph Stalin shall always remain a black mark against him, no lover of music will ever dispute his artistic gifts.
@kingstowngalway Many left wing people in the mid 20th century were naive about the grim realities of Soviet Russia. However, I greatly respect any man who can grow up in a country as conservative at the USA and come out a socialist; Socialism is in theory a beautiful and humane thing, Communism, however, has been shown to breed tyranny and oppression of the many by the few - exactly what socialism attempts to prevent. Robeson was a man for love and justice, and his persecution shames America.
This is the version that does it for me. Amazing voice and amazing man. Thank you for this post. I have this on an old LP of Paul Robeson's But no way of playing it just now.
Wonderful! Discovered Mr Robeson yesterday and am now a fan! I always wondered where Diamanda Galas had found her version of Gloomy Sunday, now I've got the answer!
I don't really get the meaning of the song and why the men suicided with such a slow and soft song .. Can someone explain ? I would really appreciate it if you would . Thank you in advance .
@VerdandiAudane Because the 2nd verse of the song is about a funeral. The people that can relate to the song. Will feel such a very unearthed power. It will urge them to end their misery.
@VerdandiAudane well me either but people killed them selves becasue it was composed in the 30's you know the deep depression, and the people who were depressed well it drew the last straw for them, because even me it makes me very sad, and they were all ready sad. like really sad. close to the ending point
There are some who continue to insist, all evidence aside, that Robeson was a baritone. Some get a little closer to the truth by suggesting that Robeson was a BASS-baritone. Good grief. The man was a BASS. His records make that plain enough. Where within them does he assay a baritone's tessitura? OR that of a bass-baritone? There's NOTHING wrong with being a bass, for heaven's sake -- indeed, I'd argue that PR had one of the great bass voices on record --
This is so very beautiful... I'm surprised I never stumbled upon this version. I'm having trouble trying to listen to something different. It's just that gorgeous.
@stevevandien I should add that if this was really a suicide-inspiring song, the bodies would have long since been piling up besides the records and CD players. Not to mention the many singers and musicians who have managed to perform "Gloomy Sunday," including Mel Torme, Billie Holiday, Paul Whiteman, Josh White, Marianne Faithful, Artie Shaw, Sarah Vaughan, Lou Rawls, Carmen McRae, Sarah McLachlan, Ray Charles, etc. without killing themselves --
I think this English translation is much better than the one more often used, as in Billie Holiday's and Sarah McLachlan's version, for example. Robeson sings it powerfully --
Unfortunately, I was not living in this era. It is QUITE REFRESHING to hear a popular male singer sounds like a MAN! If only the music industry would bring forth more 2nd Tenor/Baritone/Bass singers. The industry is capable in convincing the public of anything....ie. Britney Spears.
This version is downright amazing...and this man...this man, he is absolutely astonishing...Paul Robeson's voice blows me away. It's so deep, potent, and haunting.
no thats just a name people labeled it as because of the 100 sum ppl that maybe/maybe not killed themselves because of the song. so they nicknamed it that the real name is gloomy sunday. and yeah its by Rezso Seress..and the rest u find by other singers are covers. :]
It is also due to the mass suicide cult in Budapest that was in place when writing of this song. Many people relate this song to suicide based on this song when also social form was unpleaseant due to the fact that it was still a communist country under brutal rule
Suicides per 100,000 people per year[1] Country ↓Males ↓ Females ↓ Total pop. Year ↓ Lithuania 68.1 12.8 38.6 2005 Belarus 63.3 10.3 35.1 2003 Russia 58.1 9.8 32.2 2005 Hungary 42.3 11.2 26.0 2005
swingaroo this song has nothing to do with the commnists. It was written in 1933 when Hitler came to power and the Great Depression was at it's worst point. So you are right, we can not blame all shame on the communists.
Horthy was rear-admiral , and he was not fascist. He was a conservative , oldfashioned nationalist. He became ally with that two because he wanted the revison of Treaty of Trianon .

JESUS. That's spooky as fuck. I've heard 3 or 4 dozen versions of this song, & this may well be the best. Go figure- best version of the most depressing song ever written was sung by a black man in America in the early 20th century...
Do remind me what's wrong with injecting a bit of emotion into a composition that has been written with the sole purpose of expressing and sharing the writers feelings at that particular point in time? Or are you posting a comment in order to remind people that the song is based on an emotion? Either way, go home :)
Such a powerful voice. One of the best I have heard. I never knew there were so many different artists who recorded this song. Robeson's version is so dramatic and plaintive. Thank you.

Sadly one Sunday I waited and waited
With flowers in my arms for the dream I'd created
I waited 'til dreams, like my heart, were all broken
The flowers were all dead and the words were unspoken
The grief that I knew was beyond all consoling
The beat of my heart was a bell that was tolling
Saddest of Sundays
danecobain 2 years ago
Then came a Sunday when you came to find me
They bore me to church and I left you behind me
My eyes could not see one I wanted to love me
The earth and the flowers are forever above me
The bell tolled for me and the wind whispered, "Never!"
But you I have loved and I bless you forever
Last of all Sundays

Do remind me what's wrong with injecting a bit of emotion into a composition that has been written with the sole purpose of expressing and sharing the writers feelings at that particular point in time? Or are you posting a comment in order to remind people that the song is based on an emotion? Either way, go home :)

Such a powerful voice. One of the best I have heard. I never knew there were so many different artists who recorded this song. Robeson's version is so dramatic and plaintive. Thank you.
