You are completely amazing - listening you play drums to this, my favorite song from my favorite band, gave me chills. Congrats on nailing beat for beat one of the greatest drummers ever. Please keep posting more!
Those three seconds between 2:44 and 2:47 are pure gold!! Have you tried to practice Freddy Grubber's technique, which was adopted by Neil? I'm not talking about the traditional grip, but the energy saving and circular motions stuff... By the way this, in my opinion this is one of the best covers you've published here!!! I love it..
@ferchock Thanks! Well, to be honest, I just play the way I play. ;) If you look at old videos of Rush, you can see that Neil is playing in a very linear fashion, in particular on the ride. Now, it's very different for sure. In my case, I was exposed to all kind of music when I started - before I ever heard of Rush - and I think it helped me developing a "circular" approach early. It's an important concept, though. A lot happen to the pulse between strokes. Bonham, Porcaro ... understood that.
I would love to hear or rather I would invite others to challenge themselves by re-vamping the parts on the tracks accompanying the cd's and use people like Peart as a point of departure (P.O.D.) and give some creative boost to the musicians following us. The younger ones; up and coming. Try to be creative as possible with the greatest amount of groove and timing and verve and wit. Imagine Simon Phillips sitting in with Rush or Steve Smith or Vinnie Colaiuta or your mother! Ha! Try it...Serious
one of my fave instrumentals of theirs, you nailed it sir :)
I must admit that I preferred Neil's earlier set-ups, with the ride further around, I found a lot of things easier to play that way, there was a kind of 'logic' to it, but hey what matters is the playing, and both Neil and you excel in that department! Well done.
YOU GO BOY!!! Dude that was impressive. I don't play drums bout the best for me is air drums lol but I love this song and yes probably one of Neils complex peices and to me you were spot on bother!!!
WoW! I'm impressed, That's almost note for note, I'm learning this song and going over the tabs, one tough nut to crack, you've got those fills down!!!
Thanks man! Yes, this one took me a while... I had to study the fills like one stick at the time! It's also a good exercise for the wrists... ;) I found some old amateur videos on YT as well where you can see Neil playing this song; those helped. Good luck with it!
@Astrotama Fantastic, one of my favorite rush instrumentals and songs, too. Thanks for sharing, please make more. Is this a maple tama or birch? The sound quality is great too. You did a great job.
Great job!!! all that crazy work Mr NP puts in his work, and all you missed was a cymbal hit at 3:05!!! Outstanding job Bro!!! Keep up the good work!!!
Another fanbloodytastic performance. Great tune. No...YYZ is, and will always be, Rush's best instrumental, but Where's My Thing rates very highly among showcases of musicianship...Hell, its Rush, fer cryin out loud lol. Once again, cheers, mate (Y)
Awesome job!! Just one recommendation, because the quarter note groove on the hi-hat from 1:07-1:21 (and later again in the song) seems to be giving you a bit of trouble. Keep in mind, the groove is on the upbeat. It's a strange Peart-ism, because he is not actually playing on the upbeat. But he creates the groove with the space between notes. Try simply listening to the song and counting 1-&-2-&, etc. w/ the empahsis on the &. Also, try for more of a flam stroke on the snare on the 2 and 4.
VERY GOOD!!!! dude... not a beat out of place!!! im astounded... i know this song is a ball buster on all three instruments... i know it on bass. very good job man... you nailed some of my favorite parts.
Of your 1000000 hits, I'll bet I account for about 1000! I love watching you, but more importantly, you're helping me figure out some of Neil's tougher stuff. How about mounting your camera above your kit so we fellow RUSH drummers can get a bird's eye view? That would be fantastic for us drummers that are taking advantage of your skill and learning from you! Keep on rock'n to RUSH...you are by far the best RUSH cover drummer I've ever seen.
Thank you so much. If I ever start doing these videos again, I will try my best to get a better angle with the camera (with this size of a kit, space is tight to put anything else around it!). But at the moment, I'm done with YT since they are removing my videos one by one....
Where's My Thing and Leave That Thing Alone are just a few of my all time Rush Instumental favs, you definitly have the song down pretty good, and yes it is a very difficult song to play....WELL DONE
Right on the money! You make it look so easy. Great song. I've always liked Rush's instrumentals. I'm a beginning drummer myself. Watching your performances make it easier for me to see how it is done correctly. Thanks for the videos. Rock on!
well theres only one word to describe your work sir "amazing" im in awe at your accuracy!! exact timing aswell!! mr peart will be very proud of you, well done bro.
Well, there is already lots of info out there for tuning... Drums *should* ring and not sound like dead cardboard. But, tuning is critical in order to be able to extract the right pitch and attack while not being buried under the overtones. There is no magic; it's hard work and lots of experimenting. I still try different things all the time, including different heads, tension for the bottom head, etc. It's also tougher with more drums, just to have them sounding as a nice ensemble. Good luck!
And a few more: You really blew me away. Seldom do I see anyone who can pull off Peart's things and make it look like he knows what he's doing. It's great, man. Keep it up!
Thanks! How I learn song: Listening and visualizing the drumming in my head. I start simple, never with the details. Hi-hat here, ride there... Than a bit more on the details: cymbals work ? ghost notes? dynamics? Than finally, the details: fills: what toms? sticking? accents? All these steps sometimes are done without even touching the kit. When I sit down, I already have a good idea on what to play. And, let your brain assimilate the song. Practice, rest, and magic then happens: you nail it!
Yes, in fact they are many many Neil pictures in that room.... I writing from my office in town right now with also a picture of Neil in my bookcase.... Inspiration everywhere from the Prof!
