Excellently done! This aria, the most famous one in the opera, was written at the request of the first Erika, Rosalind Elias, who happened to tell Rudolf Bing that she loved the part but missed an aria. Bing immediately called Barber, and the rest is history! Vanessa may be the star, but all the interest gathers around Erika who stands at the centre of the plot. The opera begins and ends with her.
I particularly like this version for the fact that the wandering deer is, indeed, wandering, weeping in the woods. it speaks to the predictability and consistency of the whole situation of waiting for 20 years, day in and day out, by the window... no dawn, no sunset, just long winters and wandering deer.
Knowing this aria well, she messes up some rhythms and some of the words, but still a solid performance.
