We already have "public options" for the poor (Medicaid), elderly (Medicare), and children (SChips). I am sorry to say that these programs did not bring down the cost of health care.
Costs are up because the vast majority of health care is paid by 3rd parties - govt and insurance. When health care consumers pay pennies on the dollar out-of-pocket for the care that they receive, they do not make rational, educated decisions concerning their consumption. The Dr says you need this drug - you take it; the Dr says you need this expensive test - you get it. This is the main reason why costs are up. This will not change with a public option. Take a basic economics class.
We are talking about the cost of the health insurance. I know that there are doctors out there that "cheat" the system or they are super cautious about being sued, so they do expensive tests to cover there bases. But a lot of it is the cost to buy the insurance or to get the insurance. Pre-existing conditions blocked me from getting insurance a couple of times, so I know that we need reform now.
Think whatever you want, but I believe health care reform is good for the people.
Good point - with a public option, they won't have to do expensive thorough testing to "cover their bases" for fear of being sued because you won't be able to sue the federal government - good luck with that.
People don't get blocked from buying insurance due to pre-existing conditions- these conditions are just not covered-and for good reason. If the insurance companies did cover them, people would have no incentive to buy insurance until they needed it. e.g.-19 yr old guy chooses not to buy insurance because he is young and in good health-then he breaks his leg skateboarding-he would then buy insurance to cover his pre-existing broken leg-even though he has not paid any $ into the system.
This not reform and it is not god for the people. It is more control of our lives. And I hate to get old school, because it is of no consequence to most people these days-but it is completely unconstitutional. I know, I know- what does that matter these days. These days, if the majority wants something, that makes it good, moral, and just. The feds are bankrupting medicare, medicaid, or social security. It would be foolish and ignorant to believe that they will do a good job with this.

I was in the military, US Navy, everything was free for me and I had the best care. Plus, I got free dental too. And on the outside, the bill would have been sky high. So I do know what I am talking about.

my wife gave birth and we spent 2 days in the hospital and my bill was $9000. Back in Zimbabwe my grandmother delivered many children who are alive and healthy today and she did it for less than $100 bucks. Here in Holland quality hasn't (yet) decreased much under partial privatization but costs over the last 10 years for me have quadrupled(!) from about 25 euros a month to a whopping 95. And I have to pay extra for dental care now.

Costs are up because the vast majority of health care is paid by 3rd parties - govt and insurance. When health care consumers pay pennies on the dollar out-of-pocket for the care that they receive, they do not make rational, educated decisions concerning their consumption. The Dr says you need this drug - you take it; the Dr says you need this expensive test - you get it. This is the main reason why costs are up. This will not change with a public option. Take a basic economics class.

We are talking about the cost of the health insurance. I know that there are doctors out there that "cheat" the system or they are super cautious about being sued, so they do expensive tests to cover there bases. But a lot of it is the cost to buy the insurance or to get the insurance. Pre-existing conditions blocked me from getting insurance a couple of times, so I know that we need reform now.
Think whatever you want, but I believe health care reform is good for the people.

People don't get blocked from buying insurance due to pre-existing conditions- these conditions are just not covered-and for good reason. If the insurance companies did cover them, people would have no incentive to buy insurance until they needed it. e.g.-19 yr old guy chooses not to buy insurance because he is young and in good health-then he breaks his leg skateboarding-he would then buy insurance to cover his pre-existing broken leg-even though he has not paid any $ into the system.

I am not a dem (independent), but am a huge supporter of nationalized health care. I support a single payer plan, but do hold the public option to be real reform and satisfactory progress.
The dems need to be very careful here. I believe they overestimate their relative strength vis-a-vis the repubs. I personally know a few dozen Democratic friends that will consider 3rd parties or not voting if they do 'reform' without a public option.

my wife gave birth and we spent 2 days in the hospital and my bill was $9000. Back in Zimbabwe my grandmother delivered many children who are alive and healthy today and she did it for less than $100 bucks. I paid $9000 for a messed up bed and epidoral and to make matters worse the doctor who was suppose to deliver shows up late and the nurse was telling my wife to stop pushing till she arrived. Australia where I live has pretty much the same deal as Canada(We've had medicare since 1983). The problem for the US is it is in a huge hole economically (Due to Bush turning Clinton's surpluses into MASSIVE deficits). Here in Holland quality hasn't (yet) decreased much under partial privatization but costs over the last 10 years for me have quadrupled(!) from about 25 euros a month to a whopping 95. And I have to pay extra for dental care now.
Of course the govt considers it a massive success because we have "a profitable healthcare industry now". Yeah great, all those CEOs and shareholders are making a fortune and we're paying for it.

Unfortunately our current choice is cowards(dems) or assholes(gop). They both will spend all your money and just have different ways of trying to restrict your freedom. Oh for a fiscally responsible party that represented small govt and personal freedom. No money in that though.

We already had a weak-assed compromise in the 2nd stimulus package.
For me, this is more about who controls the real power behind the White House and the government and despite what we'd like to think - it's not us, folks. It's the Masters of the Universe (call 'em NWO, illuminati, or whatever if so inclined) but I like to call Big Business.
They don't wish to have this option on the table and are spending crazy money to see that it doesn't make it. How they spent it? We'll shall see.

The world power structure will collapse in a violent, French Revolution like, epic battle. There will be a new world order but not one like the Illuminati envision. The choices I see being presented are:
GOP-do nothing
Dems- increase costs dramatically
In the US we spend twice as much as the next industrialized nation oh health care. We are 37th in quality. We should be able to make health care cheaper and better. Why is this not even a talking point. Both parties are playing the public for fools. If is smells, feels and tastes like dog shit, it's not, it's a bill that can pass congress.
