@esquibelle How on earth did you put Gregory Hines in this category?! Have you only ever watched White Nights?! Sorry to say it but it just seemed a very odd selection of names to go up against ! Nureyev and Baryshnikov I can understand but a Tap dancer put in a category with the most famous stars of ballet? Very odd indeed
I have seen him in a bunch of things now - all on film - and he is gigantically impressive - in the exotic roles in particular. I think he owns this variation internationally at the moment.
This is completely unrelated with the variation (which is really beautiful) , but what I find amusing about the Bayadere is how offensive it looks today, especially this part. Although you wouldn't see blackface in an American production, it's kept this way everywhere else but noone ever mentions it xD
I live in Europe and have given up trying to tell the people here how offended people of color are when they put on blackface. They simple don't see how it as racist. Many do not understand or do not wish to understand the historical context in which this is done. Likewise, at Christmas time, children dress up as the wise-man Balthazar and put on blackface. This year I insisted that my son play Balthazar so his grandmother won't be offended when she visits from the US.
@fredrika27 My daughter is "colored" as I am a Finn and her father is from India. I never see my daughter in that sense, though. Anyway, I started up a conversation on this matter with her. She said that to her this is a show performance, it is just make up and she as a person with very dark brown skin is not offended in the least. Clowns wear white paint, should I be insulted?
I think this has to do more with historical positioning, countries that were colonized or had slavery such as the US and Caribbean, are more sensitive to the black-face issue because it has negative connotations. Many times whites would dress up in black-face to mock or imitate blacks, making them appear ignorant and uncultured or even worse comparing them to monkeys and apes. The ballet is historically accurate, but it does touch a nerve with some racial and ethnic groups.
His name is Ivan Vasiliev. He is a star of Russian ballet though he is only 22. He perfomed as Spartak (Spartak), Akteon (Esmeralda), Bazil (Don Kihot)
excellent solo, one of the best golden idol solos i have seen
and for those commenting about sexuality, this solo was very manly in my opinion.not all male dancers are gay, there are just as many heterosexual male dancers.
how is possible that in front the magnificent solo of may be the most promising young dancer of the world you see only that flappy thing?merluzas i am sure is going to be very disappointed,
I understand this one, she is only 18 and he has a beautiful body so I undestand that she wants to see him barechest, with 18 the important things are hyperextended extensions, new pointshoes and cute boys. I recomend her next time to watch him at the corsaire....only 18 you know.....
the whole topic considering sexual orientation is completely rediculous. most people, actually, do not care. in any event, its the ability that matters.
No where did I say that there weren't any homosexuals in ballet, but rather that most of them are straight, especially outside of america and britain (sorry if you don't like that, but judging from your profile and comment u probably don't). Obviously malakhov is gay, and presumably Nikolai Tsiskaidze and some others too (i dont want a list).
wow!!! i have no words to describe ivan!!! he surprises me every day!!! he has everything to become another baryshnikov or nureyev, i hope so!!! he's perfect as the golden idol!!!! he's totally out of this world!!!
I'm not a ballerina and may not know ballet much, but I have to say that Ivan Vasiliev is my favourite! His Golden Idol is athletic yet graceful. Everytime he jumps, it's like he's stopping in the air. So light but powerful.
straight! why would he be gay?? oh wait, ur probably one of those american or british ignorant working-class people who think that male dancers are gay. lol that is so stupid because most of them are really manly.
Oh please don't get me wrong, I never mean to insult! In fact, I had never thought that ballet-dancers could be gay (since I knew ballet from comic books especially Mari-chan series), until lately I watched films and read articles, it hit me about how gay a world of ballet dancers could be.
Plus, here in Indonesia, most of dancers nowadays are gay or end up a "far-from-manly flowery-male". Sad but true.
But again, I don't care if a dancer straight or gay. If the dance great, I'll adore them. :)
the articles/films that you saw were most probably american. i know at least 20 male ballet dancers and only one is gay. its true that some dancers are gay, but a lot of artists are gay so what can u expect? also, its probably because they get to hang around with hot guys in tights. i mean if u like men, what better place to meet hot guys than a ballet school? lol
i would say that around 90% of danseurs are manly and if you went to russia or france, it would be difficult to find a gay dancer.
You're right. The articles are somewhat about gay-life of ballet dancers in America, and the films... well, not exactly films about ballet, but these films somewhat portrayed that the gay characters are ballet dancers--or vice versa (that the characters of the ballet dancers are gay).
Honestly, gay or not, for me male ballet-dancers are amazing! They can jump high and can even lift a girl in only one hand. Dancing for 1-2 hours must be exhausting but they can still smile on stage: fantastic.
Well, in the US at least, most male dancers are gay. It is very rare to find a straight man who is involved in ballet or theater because, unfortunately, most folks in American society look down on the performing arts as "sissy." In Russia though, you certainly are correct... dance is considered perfectly masculine and gorgeous straight men are all over the place:)
That's not true. It's a stereotype that male ballet dancers are gay. There are many men in the company where I am that are straight (many of them are married to other company members in fact)
true about russia but VERY untrue about american ballet... ppl do THINK we are gay but NO we are not mostly gay most.. .like me... are straight actually ppl in america just like to think and stereotype that were gay kinda like wut u JUST did.
I really do not understand why people speacks about sex and private sexual habbits instead about ballett and dancers on this particular section of you tube in 2009 people is free in his sexual life I hope please let us speack about ballet
because for ignorants is better to gossip about sexuallity rather tham coment on levels of artistry, that obviously is a term that they can not understand, they think they know about ballet but the fact is they don´t
As a male dancer in the US, I'd say that there are probably just as many heterosexual male dancers as there are homosexual dancers here. However, I don't think sexual orientation should matter more than what the dancer brings to the stage, and I know extremely talented American male ballet dancers who are heterosexual and homosexual.
This is one of the most beautiful solos in the Ballet History, when I saw by the first time this same Bronze Idol video in Venezuela in 1986, I was in tears as now again. The Marius Petipa ballet was changed many times but the magic of Ludwig Minkus music and the talent of this dancer is beyond the words! Thank you for posting this divannaru!
Thank you for posting this! It is very interesting to see Ivan Vasiliev in new roles! It is also great to be able to compare so many dancers in the same role!

Ivan! Utterly astounding. I saw him "by accident" when he danced in Costa Mesa, CA as a replacement/standby act.
Audience was hysterical. Ivanmania. Greatest dancer I've seen since Nureyev, Since Baryshinikov. Since Gregory Hines. Ivan. Ivan Ivan.
Ivan is a true genius. Pray he stays healthy & sane. As they say, the world is his oyster.
