And even though there are only 11 players out at once there is offense, defense, special teams, and some extra players just in case someone gets injured.
I do agree that the hits in American football seem slightly harder than in rugby, but I don't really get why you need 11 different players to play offense and defense. In most sports, players are encouraged to both attack and defend and to learn different roles. Here, everyone is so specialized, do you really need two different guys to punt and kick the ball?

I think if American Football players wore less padding they wouldn't get hurt as much. I was watching a rugby match and there was a head on collision between two players. That was unusual enough that it was put on the highlights clip for the game. That's routine in football and such violent collisions lead to more injuries despite the padding.
