Freespace has a way of drawing on players' emotions. That's what I love about it. One of the saddest moments in Freespace 1 was the destruction of the GTD Galatea by the Lucifer.
Basically, the Shivans had far more powerful weapons than the Lucifer in FS2, more powerful than the combined fleets of the Terrans and Vasudans. Our only chance of survival was to trap the Shivan Armada in a system by destroying the jump nodes leading to it. The Bastion was destroying one such node.
