John 7:34 (quoting Jesus) says "You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come." Later Jeff sings "and no one is going to take my life from me..." which refers to John 10:17-18 that quotes Jesus as saying, "The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord."
Songs are anyones interpretation. Thats what songs are meant to be. At least I believe they are. So yeah you can believe that and I can believe whatever I want.
The song isn't pro-religion. If anything, it's against religion. Theologians don't know nothin'. Yes, we have souls, but they are too mysterious for religion to understand. That's my take.

Maybe its a punishment for something we did prior, maybe its a reward for something else... maybe we even asked for it and we are God. Who knows (no one in this life).
