  • Yitgaddal veyitqaddash shmeh rabba, Beʻalma di vra khir'uteh veyamlikh malkhuteh

  • who brings a baby to a funeral?

  • " in the end world didn't really need a superman just a brave one."

  • This is DVD version censored by Warner Bros. The original version had the appearances of Marvel characters Nick Fury, Fantastic Four, alongside with DC characters Big Barda, Scott Free, Orion and others. Also it featured Kirby's friends and fans Mark Evanier, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alex Ross, his father Norman Ross and Stan Lee.

  • guy looked like Jack Kirby, who recently died at the time of this broadcast. Obv. a between the lines sendoff to the King.

  • i thought stan lee was to make a cameo appearance

  • dats it..world needs no power to change world..just a brave one to sacrifice..life..n all mighty begins...a word to tell us all..superhero is within us..all of us..

  • "good bye old friend... in the end, the world didn't really need a superman... Just a brave one"

CAN U THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO DECRIBE THOSE PEOPLE WHO RISKED THEIR LIVES ON 9/11

  • Did anyone read the comic where Batman (Bruce Wayne) had an affair with one of Orion's wifes? I forget the name of the book and the wife.

  • sad viedo

  • who died?

  • Does anyone know what the minister sung and the translation of it during the funeral? I'm a bit curious about it.

Of all the endings to episodes of Superman, this one had to be the best. If everyone had the same bravery as Daniel Turpin to stand up against wrong, the world would be a much better place.

  • @Eclipton Sure, it was a Kaddish and you can find an explanation at link, towards the bottom of the page.

  • @Eclipton ah actually, the link wont post, ill just msg it to you.

  • @Eclipton He is not a minister he is a rabbi.

  • @DarthSideous63 I stand corrected.

  • @Eclipton If you want to know what the rabbi was singing, then go to google, type in "dcau", click the link that says "your guide to the dcau," and look up this episode. You'll find the translation somewhere near the bottom of the page.

  • New cartoons can suck it. I miss the old DCAU.

  • The whole Apokolips Now saga is what the next Superman film needs to be like. Tragic, violent and a all out battle. People will care about Superman films again if they can believe that Superman is vulnerable and to do that, they need a villain who is on his level powerwise. One that is pure evil, ruthless and will kill anyone and anything to get what he wants. AKA Darkseid who would be perfect for the next film.

  • This is probably one of the most emotional endings to an episode of Superman, much less in Saturday morning cartoons, in general. This is also probably one of the few episodes where Superman actually loses in the end, but this episode only made the series better for it.

  • Any one can be a Superman, you relinquish fear, hate, greed from your heart and embrace one hope, one faith, A better tomorrow

  • at :22 it's Sue Storm and Richard Reeds.

  • @swimfastfly27 no, they are not them, it was them in the original version, even nick fury appeared, but this is the dvd episode and it was altered, they didnt want any troubles with marvel, so they edite them, if you dont believe me, see wikipedia, you can see a photo of the scene there.

  • This MADE Darkseid for me. I saw him first in Justice League and didn't hink much of him until I saw this and his consequent eps which gave alot more gravity to his JL and JLU eps. In the animated series Darkseid is the #1 Superman villain not Lex Luthor. Also the scene it self is just utterly beautiful, the dialogue, the images, the music it all works

  • is he jews

  • @Shazee083 Yes he was jewISH

  • This is why I love Superman. Every life is precious to him.

No matter how tiny and insignificant a life is it still pains him when he can't protect it.

  • @Chimera1591 I kno. I like bad ass heres who kick ass take names, some of which kill and everything, but ultimately I prefer the hero heroes like Sups or Spidey who r not obverse bad asses but r just absolute heroes. I get so pissed wen ppl say Superman is too patriotic or is really a fascist. Superman is neither he is for evey1 not just AMericans and not just humans and his use of his pwrs shows he isn't fascist and unique even among Kryptonians

  • who would have thought a good guy dies in the show? Really sad but realistic in terms that good guys also die too... DCAU is the best.

  • 0:25 The Roz Kirby cameo is a nice touch, although Bruce Timm and Paul Dini decided not to air this episode until after her death out of respect for her feelings towards Jack.

  • What's with all this crying. Oh noes he dyed so did allot of ppl get over it

  • @Hreinn91 Depends on if you mean Turpin's death in this cartoon

(not that big a deal, even though it's a well done cartoon)

or Jack Kirby's death (something that still affects quite a few people even in 2010)

The death of any icon is something that can still impact people even years after that icon's death.

  • You are right, he is the best :D

  • this one was one of the top moments of cartoons and this movie was dedicated to jack kirby :/ never got a chance to meet him damn :/

  • When I first saw this episode, I caught a glimpse of the last few seconds and thought "the new guy dies?" (referring to Orion). I was shocked and surprised when I actually watched this.

And "TMNT" also had an ep dedicated to the memory of Jack Kirby. There I understood the title a bit more, even though I remembered this ep's mention a little.

  • Was Dan Turpin jewish?

  • @101388ejd yeah, because Jack Kirby (the comics legend that he was based on) was Jewish.

  • Jack Kirby and Stan Lee did more for comic books by far than anyone else- notable exceptions, of course, but those two created an entirely modern American mythology, updating classic archetypes for a new generation.... and so on

  • Ya it still makes me cry.

  • RIP Jack Kirby. Truly a king in the comics biz.

  • This quote could very well be applied to Christopher Reeve.

  • @NYBravest82: For a year, my sig at a BBS was just those words after the death of Chris Reeve.

  • Long live the King, indeed.

  • Turpin!!!!

  • wow...and they got the kaddish mostly correct too.

that was sad a really sad ending. :(

  • Yah, I read that they actually got a real Rabbi to do the kaddish in the episode.

  • I remember being 7 yrs. old watching this episode when I saw Dan Turpin die I cried back in the 90's cartoons and shows in general were good especially this episode

  • I was 9 years old when I first watched this. This was truly unforgettable, even to this day. Definitely worth the tears.

  • This was Bruce Timm' magnum opus,

    I cried.

  • Both Batman TAS and Brave and the Bold have their charms. Hell, even The Batman had my attention. Everything has its target audience and if you're not a part of it than that's just fine.

  • 0wn3d n00b pl0x that noob got so 0wn3d

  • Doesn't Dan Turpin become Darkseid in the comics? In Grant Morrisons Final Crisis, I'm pretty sure he turns into Darkseid.

  • That's right. Funny how their fates are always tied together.

  • Ehhh, not really. It's complicated. He uses his body, like some kind of twisted meat puppet. It's not Turpin, per se. It's actually rather horrible.

  • Out of all the episodes in season 1, this one has to be the best one! It's too damn good!

  • This whole episode is what the next Superman film needs to be.

  • @RSXemperor, That is so true.

  • Dan Turpin was Jewish? Cool.

  • I Remember This episode I can't forget it. It was an episode that left me surprise as a little kid this episode along with Batman's "Over The Edge" were the darkest and best done episodes in cartoons.Wish we could get this kind of dept in every cartoon but sadly all we get is silly shit that fucks up kids

  • He died defending what he cared for: His city and his world. In all the episodes I saw Dan in, he never gave up.

  • that's exactly what i've been saying. i can't understand why ppl like batman brave and the bold. i think it's funny when the fans of that show try to diss batman the animated series, sayin that the animation sucks compared to brave and the bold. like animation matters more than a good story. batman tas, superman tas, spiderman and xmen were cartoons that fans of all ages could watch. teen titans was a fun little show too

  • Ain't that the truth. I guess those cartoons went a little too deep in Violence but there was story to all of it. now it's all about good guy beats up bad guy without the morals of both. The only thing i can say is that the creators must be trying to dumb us down.

  • yeah really. they say they wanna get the "younger audience", but if it's a cartoon it's gonna appeal to younger kids anyway. what, are they going after toddlers and infants? i'd rather have the batman than brave and the bold.

  • Sure but the Batman only had action while the tas had depth. I mean I use to watch those as a little kid and now i enjoy it even more because i understand. Hell i feel like a dumbass if i watch bold and the brave. One more thing the voice acting sucks in the bold and the brave

  • I hear you man I watched these cartoons growing up and it taught me about morals and doing what's right and I appreciate these cartoons more now that im older

  • Yeah well i'm thankful i grew up during the 90's if i didn't i know i would be different. Thank God for these cartoons all of them

  • hell yeah grew up in the 90s as well back when TV had good shows

  • Amen to dat

  • Dude, the bold and the brave is for fun, so don't take it too seriously like u do to the other bat series.

  • Um...was he Jewish??

  • Portrays a minority group in a good light. Since he's from New york.

  • Actualy I saw it, and when I downloaded the episode I notice the diference, then on another site I read about it... is displayed on wikipedia as well

  • This is not the original ending... this funeral ending is dedicated to Jack Kirby who die 4 year earlier, he was one of original creators of most Marvel Comics figures.

In the original scene, you could see Stan Lee amoung the people, also you could see Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Nick Fury, and Peter Parker.

This shot appeared in the completed episode and was aired in 7 February 1998 but was later modified to remove the likeness of Marvel characters

  • You read this on wikipedia, I did too.

  • wow i wish i could get a screen shot of that picture

  • Is it on youtube ?

  • noo it cant end like this!!

  • Sooooo..... what episode does sups actually fight darkside?

  • In legacy and some 2-3 episodes in JLU...

  • awsome cartoon & great upload m8:))))) it was super duper lol

  • super duper :o *jumps off a building*

  • "In the end the world didn't really need a super man...just a brave one"

That has got to be one of the best quotes I've heard in any of theses superhero cartoons.

  • I agree with you...what a character Dan Turpin was...RIP...Shocking scene in this show....

  • @TheRogueMexican Watch the full episode on my channel,i will upload more of Superman and Batman Animated Series

  • that was definitely one of the greatest episodes, maybe even THE greatest. the fact that it's a memorial makes it even more special. but damn, Dan died...D=

  • now thats what heroism is all about.

    eat your heart out, watchmen!

  • He may have been a cocky idiot, but he never backed down.

  • Indeed :(

  • did jack kirby's wife died or did jack kirby died?

  • Jack kirby.

  • In the original broadcast, an animated Stan Lee was planned to be visible mourning the death of Daniel "Terrible" Turpin, a character based on Lee's collaborator Jack Kirby. The scene would also have included such Marvel characters as the Fantastic Four, Nick Fury, and Peter Parker, as well as such Kirby DC characters as Big Barda, Scott Free, and Orion. This shot appeared in the completed episode and was aired 7 Feb 71998 in WB Kids, but was later removed in the DVD release of the episode.

  • I think 'Apokolips Now' was released a few days after Kirby's wife Roz died,

Bruce Timm and Paul Dini had felt that this episode might hit too close to home for her and insisted on holding it back until she had passed on.

  • dang its been so long since this episode aired i don't even think i remember that part of the scene.

  • One of the most dramatic scenes I've ever seen in a cartoon.

  • Damn, that was a great episode.

  • did jack kirby acctually die?

  • The great Mr Kirby died in 1994, four years before this episode first aired. Dan Turpin was animated in his image.

  • yes he did

  • Nooo! It can't be...:(

I think this is the season 2 finale, but maybe I'm wrong.

  • Im confused. Is this the season 1 finale or season 2 finale because superman doesn't even know who darkseid is in season two in the episode father's day. Superman asked him who is he.

  • that was really bad latin by the preist, lol

  • i think thats hebrew

  • u mean yiddish

  • I dont know what Yiddish sounds like as opposed to traditional Hebrew, i just assumed it would be traditional Hebrew since its a religious ceremony.

  • yeah it was hebrew. not yiddish.

  • nooo!! sad ending :(

  • Dan Turpin like Jack Kirby is Jewish.

  • Rest in peace, Jack....I mean Dan.

    Long live the King!

  • Is he really dead? wow ic ant believe a 90's cartoon would even put that. very rare indeed.

  • now its impossible to get away with it

  • Whats with the Hebrew prayer at the end?

  • Turpin is a tribute to a legendary comic writer named Jack Kirby, who was Jewish, which is why they actually got a real-life Rabbi to read this.

  • This was a tribute to Jack Kirby.

  • This will be one of my favorite episodes. This is one of the saddest parts in the show. May Dan Turpin be the bravest one of all.

  • The act of Murder is EXTREMELY rare in Saturday Morning cartoons. I'm surprised they got away with it, but it was a well executed episode.

  • Aren't all the cops in this named after Kirby inkers? Giacoia, Colletta, Royer... not to mention Sinnott Air Base in part 1.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE was my HERO IN REAL LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKK!!!!

  • This is as dark as a Saturday morning cartoon gets. Its seems especially dark considering it's Superman. I was in a strange mood right into the afternoon.

  • just killing in principle is an evil act unto itself, but I see the coincidence

  • Actually King Zolem Superman is written to be Methodist lol

  • Damnit. I cried.

  • In another episode, superman gets even with darkseid big time! He says, "this one is for Dan Turpin."

  • Ha ha. And if you remember Darkseid said: "Who?" Truly an evil character.

  • WHY is Lex Luthor at the funeral doesn't he hate cops!

  • Probably maintaining his public image.

  • I suspected it to be true. Kalibak is vocied by Michal Dorn aka Worf from Star Trek TNG.

  • The ending was sad. I owuldn't let that cocksucker take my home I'd fight for it and die rather than be his slave

  • And supposedly, when this originally aired, there was a brief scene with some more of Jack Kirby's characters attending the funeral. Specifically Reed Richards, Johnny Storm & Nick Fury!!!

  • Stan Lee and Alex Ross are supposed to be in it too.

  • To add to that I am surprised of all the characters they would add they didn't try and incorporate Steve Rogers.

  • at 0:22 you see a man with his arm around a blonde woman. When this episode originally aired that man was Reed Richards and the lady was Sue Storm. The guy with the black suit and hair standing next to her was Johnny Storm. The guy standing in between Reed and Sue (you only see his head) was a man with an eye patch aka Nick Fury. The scene can be seen in its original form on Superman: The Animated Series Volume Three.

  • unclepatrick2 Jack Kirby was Jewish is why, Dan Turpin is based off of Him so is The Thing on Fantastic Four

  • Exactly. Several of the great comic writers/artists were Jewish, and included that trait in most of their characters. But its only recently that they have been allowed more "freedom" with religion in comics, and now they can openly state the beliefs of characters.

  • I did not know that. Still it odd for a cartoon show to show a funeral. And I can't recall seeing any other Jewish funeral on any TV shows.

  • They do a Jewish funeral. I love it. Not everyone is christian

  • Yeah that is true.

  • Heck, Superman himself is officialy Jewish.

  • He is considering Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were Jewish

  • he had a christian wedding

  • Jack "The King" Kirby was a famous comic writer & animator. He created the "New Gods" universe of which Darkseid & Orion are central characters. Dan Turpin is a visual representation of Kirby, the cemetery here is visually similar to the place where Kirby is buried and that's an actual rabbi reciting the "Kaddish" prayer. They really went all out to pay tribute to Jack.

  • darksied stinks

  • Dont worry, ol' turdface will get whats comin' to him.

  • They could've easily done the movie on this, the premise was there even for Brainiac-as supes was gone for 5 years or whatever, he could've come back with Brainiac!but no, they had to waste a movie on superman's lifting ability!they didnt even introduce a new character..arghhhh..and ONLY in the movies Luthor is NOT a dark character. This the 5th time Ive watched this episode and the 2nd time after the release of Superman Returns and everytime I go, "what was Singer thinking?" after it ends.

  • Darkside will pay!

  • Thanks for uploading!
