I think this is our first view of Carl and Ellie in CGI when they were younger (and the first CGI render of Ellie not in a photograph.)

Actually, an older Ellie and Carl (not quite near where the bulk of the movie takes place) briefly appeared fully animated in one of the behind-the-scenes featurettes.
