I have to admit every time I've tried Unity or Gnome3 or even KDE I've found myself running away after a couple of weeks. I just find it too difficult to adapt. So I'm sticking with 10.4 LTS for the foreseeable future. Frankly I don't think Linux is supposed to be designed for simplicity. That's what Windows and Mac are for. Linux is for a user who wants to be able to customize her computer to work the way she wants it, not for a first-time user who's never seen a computer before.
Everyone's whining about Gnome3's customizability. C'mon people let's realize facts, most of the problems in Linux come from customizability, every freaking person have different distributions, wm's, programs, etc which can crash or do something shit with XY other package/program/distribution. The main problem that nobody knows what's the problem. Okay, the design is shit imo too, but I like that I can't go shit with it, or maybe just by the hard way.
@Rokalacs Linus Torvalds the CREATOR of Linux says Gnome 3 is an "Unholy mess." , and ask the people at GNOME to keep making GNOME2 . He also said Unity was buggy .
@maw88ify I agree, but at least they are both newb friendly, and that's what is important nowadays. You should've to realise the fact when everyone just want an iphone, etc that nobody cares what else could've been done on that system. They just want this or that in one click/touch/keypress... Sadly ofcourse but these are facts :(
have you thought that the fact that OSX and Windows's UI paradigm's didn'T change is a _good_ thing? users accepted these paradigms by heart, got used to them and got used to work productively? As a Linux-user, I have the feeling that I have constantly change all my habits because some idiot thought he had to "innovate" something. First kde 3.5, a perfectly working sytsem got borked by 4.x, now same thing is going with gnome3 and unity
Great review of gnome 3 and unity. And you hit the nail on the head with the gnome 3 and unity issues in that they are pushing a tablet designed OS onto the desktop environment. OSX lion is going that direction and so is the new interface they are pushing for Windows 8. This is why I'll be sticking with gnome 2 or xfc desktop environment.
I am trying out Gnome 3 on OpenSUSE. Any other distros that have good Gnome 3 DE intergration? Any ideas that Mint will be going Gnome 3, or will they tweak it for their users?
Bryan + chris, love the show, I noticed that you had a issue with gnome 3 not showing you all your applications but if your in the activities view towards the top it has "windows" highlighted if you click on "applications" next to it you'll see all those beautiful apps and categories for them on the right.
What I think is interesting is that Gnome 3, Unity and KDE are all trying to make environments that work for the desktop or the tablet, but are going about it in completely different ways. Gnome 3 and Unity both went for a default GUI that can be used on a number of platforms (keyboard short-cuts and search for desktop, large icons and compositing for tablets) - whereas KDE have a platform that can be moulded to any use-case at the expense of simplicity. Interested to see which direction "wins".
Well im kinda in a dilemma at the moment, I want to use the latest Gnome and I want to continue using Ubuntu. However Ubuntu 11.04 still uses the older Gnome and other distros use the Gnome Shell, which I don't wanna use. Arrrrggg!!
I hope Ubuntu will use Unity with Gnome 3 apps in 11.10, does anyone know if this will be happening?
@jupiterbroadcasting what linux distros do you use, and what is your prefered desktop enviroment? what improvements would you like to see added to Gnome 3? what are the major points, someone should consider, moving from windows to linux? I am still trying to decide on what distro and desktop enviroment to go for on a desktop pc. One that would also suit installing to a pen drive, for my laptop as a secondary os. Used linux on and off for the last couple of years, always use open source if I can.
Tried one of the live CDs. It really, REALLY sucks. It's a pretty, shiny, unusable pain in the ass. After over a decade of being a Gnome fan, I think it's finally time to switch to KDE.
@dusthillguy The only time I have used XFCE, was when I was trying out DreamLinux. It is worth checking out as an alternate enviroment, especially if you need to free up resources.
@uncut02 It's an issue related to the length of LAS, and the video bits hitting the disk after the audio bits do the longer the recorder is under load. But I came up with a solution for our new show TechSNAP that seems to have fixed it. Going to try it for next LAS.
We use Final Cut Pro, and sometimes Adobe Premiere.
@jupiterbroadcasting Well, it's not as bad as that last episode that had to be taken off youtube. Besides, the review was so interesting I didn't bother much!
Well, that's one of linux's great shortcomings. It's an almost perfect OS with all of its amazing applications, but when it comes to video editing you have to look elsewhere.
I'd like to see a company like Canonical take on Linux video editing. If I had the know-how I'd like to create open-source screenwriting software since there's no good alternative to Final Draft which is absurdly expensive. Then Hollywood would run Linux!
oh, this is not to promote os x over gnome 3, but 10.7 does the same thing with virtual desktops. if you make an app full screen, it goes to a new desktop. if you restore it, the virtual desktop disappears.
i'm not excited about changing things that work well. windows is still a bit rough, os x has a great ui that, admittedly, hasn't changed a lot, but i like it this way. innovation is only good when it's absolutely needed.
this is why i'm not a fan of gnome 3 or kde 4. i'm not a hardcore traditionalist. i just like incremental improvements instead of replacing the whole thing, if possible. from an end user's perspective, the best os is one you don't have to notice.
Am pretty much going to stick with Maverick until next October. I might do some experimenting on a new rig that am getting soon but my productivity rig will stay on Gnome 2.32.0 for a while now.
I started watching this about 2 months ago and now its part of my weekly routine.
I refuse to use Ubuntu anymore because of their switch to the Unity interface. I have actually been scrambling for the past 2 or 3 months trying to find a suitable replacement for Ubuntu and have decided on Debian and Fedora (don't judge). I was using OpenSUSE 11.3 but 11.4 was way too unstable on my 2 laptops.
I'm currently installing Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 inside of Virtual Box. If I digg it enough, I might consider dual booting it along side OSX. We'll see how it goes.
Im with Bryan. I don't wanna use Unity OR Gnome 3. But since i have my ubuntu website and youtube channel, ill have to pick one of them to do svreencasts on. Regular gnome videos would be boring.
about the Gnome review, I would also make a case for Jolicloud, and all the 'netbook' interfaces like Moblin, Maemo/Meebo, KDE Plasma and the Sugar from the XO.
Can I suggest to you guys to do what "ThisweekinLinux" has done where he has put annotations at the top of the video seperating the Subject articles he is talking about.... so users can skip foreward to the subjects they want to hear about instead of watching a video that goes for over an hour ;)
i actually like gnome 3 overall, i agree in that those widgets in the top panel could be brought back...miss them a bit...but it is not too bad. but i agree with Chris: that this is most probably the baseline, and from here the Gnome team will build up the new Shell.
well, if it's a choice between gnome 3 and android for the touch pad, it's android all the way. seriously, gnome 3 can't touch android or apple for the tablet. for the desktop i've switched to kde as of late.
I have to admit every time I've tried Unity or Gnome3 or even KDE I've found myself running away after a couple of weeks. I just find it too difficult to adapt.
