Those boys rock!! a time with muscle cars and rocknroll there was a place a guy could go and escape for a while.I ran a 70 cuda at the strip when i could afford to and did some cruisn' on saturday nites. To this day, listening to this song still makes me feel good this is truly a great song!!!
@fourfortysixpak1 In '72 I went to Vancouver Island from Edmonton Alberta in my ancient Rambler. I had an 8 track in my car and played Machine Head a lot while on the road. The album is a great 'driving' album. Man I miss those wonderful days. I really do; got plenty of good memories from back then. May God Bless.
@duqmiguel yup, me!! been listening to deep purple since the 70s, the best rock band! blackmore kicks ass, lord the best keyboard man, paice the best drummer, gillan the best frontman!....deep purple, simply the best, man!
All the band was magnific in this record, Ian Gillan at the best vocal performance, Ritchie Blackmore a genius, Jon Lord a genius, Roger Glover a brillant bass and Ian Paice a genius!!!!!!
Look for the remastered full set of recordings from all 3 shows used to make "Made in Japan" 2 shows in Osaka and 1 in Tokyo, August 15 -17 1972. It is badass and each song is different each night. This Highway Star 8/15 is my favorite. The kick drum and bass are heavier, and Blackmore's guitar solos are raw and furious.
Ritchieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! is perfect!

Was soll dieser Schessikometer das ist noch richtige Handmade supper!!!!!!! Da hört man das LSD noch so richtig raus. Nicht so wie heute bei den Koksern.....
Actually "Made in Japan" has each song once from three different shows... this version is only on the 3 disc CD set call "Live in Japan"., each disc being the full concert on the three different dates.
the album made in japan was taken from three concerts. if you want to listen to them, buy the CD "live in japan". it includes three versions of highway star. they took the best version for the made in japan album.
If I remember correctly, because it has been a few years, the only way you could get this LP at first was if you bought it as an import. Much to the record company surprise it was such an hit that they then released it in the US.
Made in Japan is probably the best live recording of a series of concerts ever made. It's a pity Ian Gillan never did much REAL screaming in their studio recordings: The studio version of "Child in Time" is APALLING when compared to what he does in Japan! Live, Ian Gillan was superb. His performance in "Jesus Christ Superstar" is also excellent.
@LeeBeeBee1 I had never heard the studio version of Child in Time until last night -- I ONLY knew that song from Live in Japan, where it's harrowing. The "screaming" in the studio version sounds like an church choir. COMPLETELY wrong for the song, natch. But I wonder if that was a producer/manager decision. Lot of old fogies were hanging around out there recording and managing these young firebrands.
@2c26 wouldn't be normal if you DIDN'T ;-) Your post reminds me of an old ad/commercial for some sound-related company...maybe it was Maxell, not sure...anyway a guy is slouched in his chair in front of his stereo, and the music comes on and the guy's hair is flying back. Great stuff, really captured the feeling visually.
Purple had a great feel for building momentum...holding back the power at first, Paice and Glover laying the foundation...Lord and Blackmore doing little rhythm stuff at first...building the anticipation...here it comes, like a freight train...rumbling at first, picking up speed till it blows by you and through you
@guitar1195 There is...it's the leadoff song on Machine Head. Search this in youtube: deep purple highway star studio. You'll get multiple opportunities.
These are not the original tracks from the made in japan album, and not as good btw. The vocals and solos are much better on the originals.
Why is everyone posting these non original tracks? And where are the original tracks? Damn hard to find on youtube!!
I wouldn't even think of buying this cd, I'm gonna dust off my good old turntable and play the original lp again instead of these second choice cd versions.
Weird - this is not the same version as was on the LP. I must say, the one from the LP is *much* better - I wonder why they'd replace it. Definitely a case of the production gang demonstrating their "It was working, so we fixed it!" attitude - they always seem to need to piss on the hydrant in case somebody forgets they're what it's all about...
What is often overlooked is the how the bass really drives this song. Beyond the pulsing beat, listen what Glover does under the radar during the guitar solo for example in the late 5 minute into 6 minute mark.
il miglior album al mondo esistente, datemi del fanatico, masochista ,ma non esiste album migliore, neanche mozart, beethoven, sa darmi i brividi come questo capolavoro
@nba2065 That's debatable... How about "Live at the Fillmore East," by The Allman Brothers or "Live at the Fillmore," by Derek & the Dominos...? Deep Purple was the headliner at my 1st ever concert in 1973(14 years old). 120,000 people at The West Palm Beach Raceway, an all day festival with David Blue, Savoy Brown Blues Band, Billy Preston, ZZ Top, Deep Purple and others...
One of the most wickedly awesome live albums of all time! The 70s had great hard rock and progressive rock. Of course disco sucked, punk sucked, and Gordan Lightfoot sucked.
@rocker70sman agree 'cause I have the 2 set vinyl and I believe this was recorded on one of the venues which was not the same as the one the original vinyl.

Ive never heard good morning on my highway star version, and I heard this album a million times, sometimes very slowly and intensly...like in a warpspeed and other times quickly....you know what I mean.
This track is NOT from 'Made In Japan'! I have just heard it! The intro is very different! The organ fades in starting to play the song. The drums begin about 00:22 sec. The guitar, about 00:34 sec. Ian Gillan doesn't even introduce the number until around 00:37 seconds. Also, the version from 'Made In Japan' is a LOT better than this one, which is okay, I guess, but the other version is GREAT!!! I think that I shall probably have to upload it now, after saying that;) Can I? What of copyright?
@beerman28564 - Thanks! I did upload the great original, but had some issue with copyright or other so took it down again, having no experience with matters
like that. But as mrmres below asks 'Where is that one on YouTube?' I don't know why nobody else it seems has uploaded it!!!??? I'm going to try again some time soon. as it should be on YouTube!
The best rendititon of Highway Star was the actual cut on the Made in Japan album. This one's not quite as good. Ritchie WAIIIILS like a maniac on that & I have an emotional attachment to that one...not this one. WHERE IS THAT ONE ON YOUTUBE?
@mrmres I agree. The version you speak of is by far the best one. I too have an emotional attachment to that version of the song. I felt like an outsider...when I heard this song, I knew I found where I belonged!!! Thanx to Blackmore , Gillan, Glover, Lord,& Paice
I think this version is from the next date in Japan, I think Aug. 16th. Album called Live In Japan, which is remixed versions of the originals from the original masters, and some alternate versions from other shows while they were there. Well worth picking up.
Where's the recording from the original ALBUM, dammitt?! People keep trying to tell me this is the original, well that's bull. I owned this recording for many years, so don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining.
Sorry but that's wrong..the re-master has exactly the same concerts as the original vinyl Made In Japan....this one however is taken from the 3 CD set Live In Japan...different concert from the version on MIJ.
Despite the video showing the Made In Japan cover...this version is not from that album..there is a 3 disc set called Live In Japan, compromising each concert on each disc..this version is from the concert on 16th August.
All 3 versions of this song from these shows on Aug 15, 16, & 17 , 1972 are terrific. People may prefer one over the other but nobody can deny that all 3 versions rock & rock & rock some more.
Just listening to this song, and I can smell the good reefer we were smoking back in 72-73. It was called "jamaican", not too strong, nice and sweet, it was just right.
Classic rock that rocks!

Where's the recording from the original ALBUM, dammitt?! People keep trying to tell me this is the original, well that's bull. I owned this recording for many years, so don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining.

Sorry but that's wrong..the re-master has exactly the same concerts as the original vinyl Made In Japan....this one however is taken from the 3 CD set Live In Japan...different concert from the version on MIJ.

the power of this band is just fucking AWESOME! I am a typical Purple/Zep/Sabs fan from way back then but Purple live to me was ahead of everyone!

typo..comprising*..not compromising lol.
seventiesclassic 2 years ago
Despite the video showing the Made In Japan cover...this version is not from that album..there is a 3 disc set called Live In Japan, compromising each concert on each disc..this version is from the concert on 16th August.

All 3 versions of this song from these shows on Aug 15, 16, & 17 , 1972 are terrific. People may prefer one over the other but nobody can deny that all 3 versions rock & rock & rock some more.

Just listening to this song, and I can smell the good reefer we were smoking back in 72-73. It was called "jamaican", not too strong, nice and sweet, it was just right.
