wow...we have certainly been subject to this treatment in canada.we too homeschool, for my child is a human being, not just a mental delay. Not until you have a child like mine do you really open your eyes to how really messed up the rest of normal society really is.I'm appalled at the school system.Lots of love to all of you that have been through all of the struggles.Keep on loving your children for who they are.
The biggest misconception about autism is that they think all of these children are mentally retarded, which is ignorance of autism. Once these kids get over their hump of learning, they usually take off like crazy and make up for lost time! But they have to have the believers in education to back them.
I wonder what would happen if the law firms with school contracts were cut off from the public feeding trough. Or if schools focused on solutions for our children rather than learning IDEA loopholes from NELI (Nat Ed Law Institute) semiars. I wonder what would happen if everyone followed the money and realized how our tax dollars are actually being spent....
We need to continue reading and sharing this with everyone we know, especially elected officials and those we know who vote and speak out. If we make a difference with even one child, then we have made a difference!
We are in Georgia and I've heard all of this and much more. One of the worse was "The reading resource class is not for special need children" results:6th grade and reading on 1st grade level. Thank you for telling our sons story through your sons story. Sadly it is the same story all over America. Together we can change this!! It IS NEVER to late!
Wow!! Great job expressing the grief and commitment of every parent of a child who is treated differently; especially those with daily struggles, who endure many of the same indignities that their children are subjected to, being dehumanized, lied about, accused of being the problem and many more, just to secure FAPE for their children. Thank you everyone!
WOW! what a powerful and excellent message this video brings! Thank you for sharing this. Recently one of our 4 yr old twin boys was diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder. Both now enrolled in Early Intervention, however EI ends when they turn 5 on July 31 2008 because they are to start Kindergarten in a public school this fall. **wish I could afford a private school** We have no other choice than to depend on our public school system.
THANK YOU!!!! What's happening to our most special children is a disgrace and appalling. The school psychologist looked me in the eye this year and said, "your son is border line retarded". I objected to his use of that term but he never apologized. They told me my son can't learn a year's worth of material in a year. Funny how he's learned almost 2 months worth in the 3 weeks he's been home schooled now. Thank you for making this slide show!!!
I didnt learn to read untill well into the 3rd grade.
like anything, if im not interested, i will not be able to learn it. and i simply didnt care.
i then figured out that all the great stories i loves were hidden inside books. and over the next 3 years i read hundreds of books, often reading 2 or sometimes even 3 books a day. we learn different, we think differently. Sometimes the educational system itself, is uneducated about this.
I worked for over two years for a law firm in Texas who represents school districts in all special education due process hearings. LOTS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS are going to pay the law firms and it is disgraceful. My son is 12 and has Asperger's. He's been in public schools since he was 4 yrs old and can't do multiplication. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN & MUST BE FIXED !
If you have any knowledge from your experience at that job maybe you could share some of what you have learned that would help all of us trying to help our children. God only knows we need ALL the help we can get.
Thank you for putting this up in support of our children. We have been battling the school system for years. Our daughter is Bipolar and Autistic. Now, mid-way through 5th grade, she has an IQ score 2 points above retardation! From a child who started out in life so advance and way above her peers, to a 11 years old who is just being skimmed by due to the school system ignorance and lack of will to help my child. It's a continuing battle and God help us all with special needs children!
I agree this is mild and sanitized ..... as many families in many states know. This is probably the beginning, because the arrogance and power that is used against our families is a disgrace.
This video was put together by a father and his dear son who has Asperger's with input from 10 families and pictures of their beautiful children. Many thanks to all that contributed and especially to the father and son that put in untold hours producing it. Amy
To all that had a hand in making this presentation - Kudos! Thanks for everything you do to bring awareness of our kids' plight to the public forefront. We are grateful for your grit and determination to make education more accessible to our kids. This shouldn't be a constant battle with schools. Our kids have a right to be educated without fear of rejection or stigma or hurtful name-calling. We need to eductate their peers, too. Those so-called "normal" kids can be incredibly ignorant. K.
3. A large number of students in SPED have normal intelligence but have a learning disability (LD). Having an LD does not mean they cannot learn, but means they require a different approach. When provided with the right approach, these students are highly successful to the point that they can academically perform as if they did not have LD.
4. Huge problem is many teachers do not have training in this specialized method or if training takes place it is not founded on proven methods.
1. School systems spend tax payer money to pay to belong to associations that provide lawyer seminars to teach them how to prevent students from receiving a Free and Appropriate Education (which is the law they are supposed follow).
2. Special education does not mean diluting the curriculum as the public is made to believe by so many school bureaucracies. SPED is supposed to bring skills up so the gap is closed.
I am concerned about using the emotional aspects of this. I think rather than the music and the crying that is reported, presenting information that legislators can get stirred up about is very effective. Let the situation speak for itself. If the public really understood what is happening, such as how money is being given for expert instruction but there exists few experts ...one of the many facts they should know. The public needs to know that if the gap is not closed, it hurts them.
This made me cry. Not enough people know badly our children are treated as throwaways. People also don't know that if our schools do not educate our children, the cost on the taxpayers is going to be enormous when they become adults and can't even get a job, let alone have the quality of life every one expects their children to have.
Wow!! Perfect song for the video and for the cause. Stirs up a lot of emotion. Beautifully produced; tells it exactly the way it is for families of students with disabilities. Thank you Amy
As a parent of child with a disability who has been in a Due Process Hearing in Texas where a school has been spent over $200,000.00 in legal fees to not provide an appropriate I can't even begin to explain how much this video speaks of this horrible unfair process. And it can't/won't be changed until EVERYONE gets involved. It is not just the future of these kids, but the future of EVERYONE.
Hits the nail on the head! The very people that should be supporting can often be the most discriminating and oppressive. My son has most of his needs met ONLY because we fought for it, the hardest thing I ever did. For info see kidstogether
Thank you Amy for all you are doing! We will stand by you and our children to do what is right! NO child should be subject to the treatment my son had to go through!
I am a parent of a child whose school DID sue us to avoid providing an appropriate education to our child. Hard to believe this kind of thing is happening in our country.
Even though laws guarantee every qualifying child with special educational needs the right to the individualized services and placement necessary for their success, schools often fight this and threaten parents with legal action.
THANK YOU for bringing awareness to this issue. Together we CAN make a difference. We have to!
