  • As I post here on rememberence day, I've been sharing the Big Country songs in honour of the cause, I've never lost anyone to war, luckily my Grandfather and Father came back but I sit here and have enjoyed watching your 2 video's with tears of empathy running down my face. It leaves me to say Make Love, not War xxx

  • one of the best songs ever written, certainly one of scotlands proudest moments, musically. such a pity the pain he ended up feeling. how ironic that he wrote such a powerfull song that reflects how he must have been feeling in his last moments. he didnt deserve it. rip.

  • My favourite BC song - that really is saying something when there are so many, many great works to choose from. Steeltown? No more to say.

  • who the f dislikes this? whats to dislike? a gorgeous song with so much emotion. simply excellent.

  • a classic song. one of the best ever written. scotlands proudest moment musicaly. god bless stuart adanson. what a band.

  • Magnificent song as was most of big country's songs fantastic band

  • This song makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I think you can really hear Stuart's own pain in this song.

  • so much energy, raw emotion jesus what a talented individual, and what a waste of talent, if only someone could have heard his cries for help then maybe Stuart would be here with us today, utter tragedy!!!!

  • This is absolutely a classic. A powerful, powerful song, one that should be remembered through the long years, far past its own time.

  • for my pal andy

  • A classic is decided by an individual and not always by the masses. What is classic to one may not be to others.I'm sure there are many out there who would say The Eagles "Hotel California"is not a classic and those who think "All the small things" by Blink 182 is.I think this one is and if you don't,that is your opinion.

  • i love big country. im 17 and my mum got me into them. compared to them the bands these days are shocking

  • When I was a teenager, and heavily into BC, I saw an American documentary about the Troubles in N. Ireland. They played this as they showed two funerals after a gun battle--they were burying Catholics and Protestants, but seeing the widows' and sweethearts' faces made me think that there was more uniting them at that moment than there had ever been to divide them in the first place.

  • played at my uncles funeral as he would of wanted - amazing song.

  • thahks man

  • not a bad song, not a bad group, but this is most definitely not a classic in any way

  • @BradKington -Thanks for that Brad. Most of us long time BC fans needed putting straight :)

I'd like you define 'classic' for me then and just who decides it is or isnt. I only ask because the song is older than you and 'quite a few 'people still see it's quality. 'Having lasting significance or worth; enduring.' is a defining factor of a 'classic' is it not?

    Or do you prefer Dokken?

    Just my view of course.

    Peace.

  • @CarlBewley Porrohman, now that's a classic.

  • @CarlBewley I like Dokken...I like Big Country. (Ive seen both in concert, ironically) Im a metalhead who can really appreciate the emotion, unique style and musicianship of BC. Too bad most of the world never got past "In a Big Country" and "Fields of Fire"...BTW, Id call this a "classic" for sure

  • @Ouddatoon psst I like dokken too . . . shhh. :)

  • @Ouddatoon

Carl, it's good to read comments like your's concerning BC. They were a truly brilliant band and this song is a yet another example of their talent. Everytime I hear "come back to me", it makes me feel so much inside.

  • Comment removed

  • @CarlBewley Yes lol i do prefer dokken but anyway, my personal view of a classic would be a career defining song or a song which has helped a group to further or greater success on their course, i personally don't believe this helped big c to create a bigger name for themselves. But that is just my personal opinion, other people will almost definitely disagree with me saying this. Having saying this i had no right to say it wasn't a classic, people have different opinions, and i appolagise

  • @BradKington - No worries mate!

  • @CarlBewley A classic is a song that sounds as fresh today as it did 20 years ago.

Yeah, I'd like you to find me a Big Country song that isn't a classic. There are a few (PIOT I'm looking at you) but not many.

If you really listen to their stuff every time you can hear something different.

  • @cretinbob - Think you need to reread the comments mate. I'm in total agreement BC are 'classic' full stop - thats why I made and posted the video (as well as many other BC songs on my youtube channel). It was Brad who made the original point but he was big enough to see both sides in the end! Stuart was a genius and in my opinion, no one has ever bettered his songs - in any genre.

  • @CarlBewley

I was just making a comment, not an argument.

  • @cretinbob - no problems mate. I just thought you got our comments mixed up! I'm a huge BC fan and always will be - hence why I do the videos. I believe this is one of the best records ever made. A classic!

  • @CarlBewley By that definition of "classic", some Dokken songs are classic. I'm just sayin'...

  • @CarlBewley Nothing wrong with DOKKEN! They had a fabulous guitarist.

  • @BradKington

you most be on heroin.... idiot

  • Nominee : 'Song I'd like to be played during my funeral march' award. See you in guitar heaven, Stuart. We never met but this song has connected us since the moment I heard it in 1984.

  • Brilliant and soulful track from Steeltown...

  • i asked you to do this on the where the rose is sown thread! ..and you'd already done it!!

  • Without a question one of their finest moments if not the best one.

  • @aivokallo77 Asbobloodyexactly!!!!! Well said.

  • To me, you should never listen to Where The Rose Is Sown, without listening to this straight after, just as it was on Steeltown. It gives you the bigger picture.

  • I totally agree especially the way the 2 tracks fade into each other.

  • Wonderful stuff, CarlBewley .

Stuart wrote two great Falklands War songs with Where The Rose and Come Back To Me. Just a pity that more people don't recognise these songs for the classics they are.

  • good stuff thank you!

  • Totally brilliant track - the best on the film. Very nostalgic trip for me! I can't see past it!

  • ABSOLUTLY GREAT AT ALL!!!!

  • Amazed by this video..Cause are exactly the images and strong emotions i had in my mind when I was 20 and dreamed of scotland. Thank you!!

  • You're welcome, thanks for this comment, must hav emissed it when you first posted :)

  • Fantastic song. Fantastic talent. Fantastic man. long live Stuart!!!

  • I hadn't listened to this song in many years. It sounds just as good as ever. :o)

  • Wow, this used to kill me just reading the lyrics & hearing the song when I was younger. Just the thought of this made me feel so awful for so many people who have lost their special someone. Applying it to Stuart is .... moving.

  • fukkin work of art. stuart we love you son, god on a guitar.

  • it dosent matter about no 1s, music should move you, this moves me to tears, brilliant rip sa

  • spot on!

  • my favourite!!

  • MONSTER!

  • Sorry for writing your name wrong :(

  • No Worries, glad you enjoyed it :)

  • I did :)

  • Dear CarlBewlwy, great!

  • One of their best songs,

  • the best :)

  • i've moved on a lot musically(taste wise) since BIG COUNTRY but they are still my favourite band of all time "stay alive"miss you stuart

  • I can very much relate, thank you!

  • so sorely missed... Stuart got me into music

Thankfully I got see them live

    Another absolute gem!

  • Lovely video for a beautiful tragic song. I often wonder why aren't there more covers of Big Country songs. Since this is sung in the voice of a war widow, it would be nice to hear a woman do it. As I listen to the intelligent and sensitive lyrics, I'm mourning Stuart even more than usual on this anniversary of his death.

  • thanks for the images and for upping this great song

  • Thanks for the lovely video.

This has been one of my favorite songs of all time since I cracked open my brand-spanking new copy of Steeltown the day it hit the record shops. The images you have chosen are so appropriate...and thanks so much for including a portrait of Stuart Adamson. I mourn him all the time, but never as keenly as when I listen to this song.

  • wot a brill song sheer quality stuart adamson rip

anyone able to send me this song cheers

  • it's sweet...

  • OMG! I feel like a stalker! just popped by because i love this song! Bla Bla, Thanks again Carl! Its just nice to visit every now and then. Does anyone fancy a bit of David Bowie?.......Song for Bob Dylan.....???

  • No probs Mrssh, always good to have you around!

    (though i'm not much of a Bowie or Dylan fan . . . )

  • Carl, as always you have perfectly matched images to a beautiful sad song. Do you or any other U tubers know the name of the piece Stuart plays before "what are you working for" on the safety net dvd? I think its a trad. scots piece as the crowd go mental and mark sounds like he is playing drums in a pipe band. makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, especially if you have few beers on board.

  • Hi Tim41

Sorry for no reply on this, been overlooking my youtube reps! Anyway, as for the song It was discussed at length on the BC website a few months ago but the name escapes me. Its a very gaelic piece o' course. If I find out on my travels, will let you know. Cheers

  • Hello CarlBewley!

You put this together!! I love it, you have truely done it justice, its very artistic and also very moving. I have sent this video to so many people, its wonderful to know where it came from and learn more of the history behind it. Thank you for making me a very happy girl. X

    P.s The old Man's a fan too

  • Most welcome!! I've got quite a few Big Country vids I did last year on my account so feel free to click on my name and check them out.

Thanks fo roforwarding it on, it's nice to have an audience for these brillaint songs.

  • All these years i thought this was a song about a man that left his woman, i didnt realise its about someone been killed in a war! Its my fav BC song, and the photos on this video show scenes from the Falklands where my husband served! im really shocked. It just makes it all the more powerful for me. Just shows you "every day is a school day"

  • HI MrsSh,

I believe Stuart actually wrote both 'Where the Rose has Sown' and this one in direct response to the Falklands war which is why adding the imagery made sense to me. One of the saddest songs I've heard and truly orginal in that the singer sings in a different sex!

  • Yes, why did it make sense to you? Its such a moving song, ive grown up with this. I never thought id be married to a Falklands Vet when i was singing to this all that time ago! My Husband was in 3 Para, would you believe. He was on Mount Longdon!!

  • Well thats spooky! I believe (but not 100% sure without checking it) that the original single sleeve for 'Where the Rose is Sown' has a map of the Falklands on it. I think both Songs were Stuart shouting loudly against the war. That's why when I put this together, I wanted images of Soldiers in the Falklands.

  • Lovely song, great bit of editing, well done, ,thanks for uploading.

  • This song is so beautiful! Well done for the choice of the pics!

  • Another beautiful video Carl, thanks :)
