Marvelous film, I watched this film for the first time last night! I had never even heard of it before. Although I didn't much care for the "frame" story of the war exercises, there were many wonderfully constructed scenes, like this one. The superb scene in the Berlin beergarden, the transition scenes of the trophy heads ( with the oddness of having his dead wife's painting among them!) and most of all the brilliant "This is NOT a Gentlemen's War" speech.

No, it cuts to a scene outside where anxious friends are waiting - then the hospital.
