I don't understand the debate on this one: he committed a crime and plead guilty. He was sentenced and fled. In the USA, you can appeal a sentence if you can show it's too harsh. You DON'T have the right to flee the country and never be accountable for your crime. The issue now isn't about his initial crime, he's an escaped, convicted felon. Extradite him and process the new charge: Felony Fleeing in addition to his rape conviction.

"Unlawful sexual intercourse" with a minor is what it's called in California's penal code. Only a small handful of states actually use the term "statutory rape" -- Bonafied rape is another kettle of fish.

Righteously stating that Polanski "raped a 13 year old child" is bad enough in anonymous YouTube comments but, on a widely watched national TV program, it could conceivably leave the hosts/show/network open to a lawsuit.

@SSICTR OK so let's take away the emotional aspect if you want. Is it ok for a 43 y/o to have sex with a 13 year old? That simple let's forget the drugs and only concentrate on the act itself. Remember as with any law regarding a minor, it doesn't matter onto the law if the person is 13 or 3 she would still be considered a minor.

@SSICTR If you read S.G's quote thoroughly what she is saying is that she wants it to be over so she doesn't get dragged into limelight for that kind of publicity time and again.

It's exactly the same thing with women who don't want to press charges for rape because they don't want to be dragged through the court process and be traumatized further. It's a phenomena that benefits the perpetrator, but no decent person would present it as a reason to not punish a criminal.

I totally diagree with Whoopi...Roman Polanski needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent. He raped a 13-year-old child no matter how long ago it happened. Whoopi's argument is that it isn't rape because the victim's mom knew about it...well, the mother needs to be prosecuted and thrown in prison as well. They are both criminals.
