I almost laugh out loud anytime i think of the daily and it's pathetic launch, considering all the hype surrounding it beforehand. And then they launch the thing, and I look at it with my jaw dropped amazed at how low the quality of the actual application is, as well as the content. For you to optimize their mess in one night speaks to the incompetence of their devs
@Millahtime How many iOS developers are there in the world at Loren's level of skill? Why doesn't apple provide more tools and guidance out of the box to make such development easy for 'intermediate level develoeprs'?
@balinx There's plenty of tools available in the SDK for low-level performance analysis - to be fair, I suspect the developers of The Daily were up against the clock.
As for making such development easy for intermediate level developers - the APIs make many things easy, and grows with each release to support common problems - the problem is when you want to do something no one else has done yet.

Great way to show them up at their one game Loren, well done. Unfortunately The Daily's woes aren't just limited to sluggishness; can you fix the low quality content? :)
@darwiniandude It is a daily occurrence for me and most of the people I know who use it. It is one of very few apps on my iphone that regularly crashes. And it ALWAYS when composing a tweet or DM - the worst repercussion of which is to lose everything typed.
@wesscoast Loren is male. And is the developer for Twitter client for the iphone, having had his app "Tweetie" bought by them. Please do try and keep up.
Looks pretty fluid. What's going on at the top? This small empty gray button... I'd fade it out and back in, so it doesn't break the visual flow so much.
does it play movies

I'd love to know a little bit about how you did this. It looks great, and I'd love some ideas on optimizing this kind of Core Animation behavior.

Loren, nice work as always. And for the commenter with pronoun problems--Loren is a boy. ;-)

Excellent work. I shook my head when I saw what they actually shipped, honestly can't believe how incompetent some developers can be.

Brilliant work... Now how about you try making Twitter for iPhone stop crashing every 5 fucking minutes. It's been doing it for about 6 months.

@domcoke I don't think she works on every single iOS app. ahem.

Don't start trying to attract News Corp. You've already got a great job at Twitter ;)

That's a pretty clever spin on CoverFlow in general. Nice work.

That's beautiful, Loren! That UI would make me want to actually use The Daily.

Just what the iPad needed: more hack, fake journalism from the people who brought us Faux News Channel. Bigtime screwup, Apple.

@Chasaurus As you may have guessed, I am no fan of Murdoch or Fox "News." Hard to believe there are so many Fox lovers on here.
