1) They did not grease the slide properly. A properly greased slide will drop to the ground at the slightest angle. (A nice set of tromb-O-tine should do it…)
2) They did not secure the mute properly. Notice it always is just set in the bell. If he was actually planning to do this, he would have held the mute in.
3) He would have been blowing air through the instrument, which, in a trombonist's case, would greatly increase the pressure inside the slide.
4) They were using a crappy trombone whose slide probably doesn't move very well to begin with. No amount of grease can fix a crappy slide.
5) As I myself have proven on several occasions, even without explosives... a trombonist's breath is enough to push a properly greased slide off of the instrument with a mute in.
I love the Mythbusters, but sometimes they don't put nearly enough thought into testing a myth.
will this myth still be busted if: since it's the finale, I believe the trombonist will be playing at fortissimo, hence a lot of strong airflow and pressure, which may compensate for the welded mouthpiece and give the effect of shooting the slide.
Thanks for upload. Couple of points about myth tho:
-surely the conductor being surprised at anything flying towards him could have stumbled back falling into the crowd?
-if the trombone player was playing as the firework went off could the air being forced through from both sides create enough pressure to send the slide flying off?
liked the concept and hope that it happened somewhere even if they say it's not possible. might try it at a concert sometime :P
The trombone player would be playing FFF loud when the explosion went off, so what would that psi be is the question. You dont always play in first position lol. The slide would be super slick more than likely. The tuning slide probably would be real sticky. I have played alot of trombones and some have thin thin bells. The bell is typically soldered lengthwise and is sometimes worn and weak. The mute typically isn't new or aluminum and the cork is flattened.
The issue that Buster didn't get knocked over definitely shouldn't have been a reason for busting this myth because a normal conductor would have freaked the shit out if a mute/slide got shot at him, causing him to topple backwards naturally in response. They welded the mouthpiece shut and everything the myth said basically came true. If there was a human playing the trombone it just wouldn't have shot the slide as far and his lips certainly would've been burned. ^^
These guys R so full of $hit!! The dummy did not seal the mouthpiece in N E way whatsoever. A person playing it seals it - soft lips no gaps, etc. WOuld ruin your face, blow your ears - maybe kill U, but it would work 2 launch the thingy.
I just want to know why they didn't use more than one mute!! I'm pretty certain the myth as they explain it is false, but what if they use a lighter mute that the cap won't fly off of.
Lets say a stone-lined straight mute that isn't really tight in the bell. I mean, the mute isn't actually being used as a mute, especially in the 1812 overture. The bonist probably left it in there loose.
Also, I bet if this happened, the conductor was hit and then stumbled backward.
Both of those trombones were vintage Elkhart, Indiana manufactured models from conn, king, martin, reynolds, blessing , holton or york made anywhere from 1930's to the 60's!! And they trashed them!! jerks!
What Mythbusters didn't and CAN'T duplicate is the surprise factor in both the trombonist and the conductor. What if the trombonist was out in 7th position when it blew? He could have jerked and sent the slide flying. The conductor could have been hit by the mute and in surprise tumbled backwards as a defensive maneuver.
@GoinBand2 I agree with "GoinBand2," one time I was practicing and this kid came up behind me and poked me in the sides while I was out towards 6th or 7th, and I jerked and my slide shot off a few feet. I don't think that this myth is plausible though, the air would have escaped through other gaps and openings, and it surely would have blown the tuning slide out.
yes, he would, im a trombonist, and even if you welded the mouth piece shut alot of the power from the exposion would escape through the water key and from between the mute and the bell of the trombone...
the poor trombones..

One thing that I noticed is yeah they put a person on the Trombone, but they didn't have any air going through it.

I now for sure they do not know about things like turbos and boost leaks, or gas charged rifles and gas leaks leading loss of semiauto/auto function.
