I was always a little confused as to why Misty has never made a reappearance in any of the seasons after the she left. Along with the Pikachu's Goodbye episode, the episode where Misty leaves will always make me cry. I don't care if I'm a dude! These were sad moments in my childhood okay?!

Not wanting to start any arguments, but Misty in the Japanese version is 10 stated in eipisode 3 of the OS according to Bulbapedia. It's not stated out right in the dub what her real age is, but everyone assumes she's 12 since of the height differences and forums.

Ash was, and to my knowledge, still is 10. Misty is/was 12 when this was released. I like this song and think it'd be cute if they got together, but they're TEN AND TWELVE. Misty probably hasn't gotten a period yet. This song seems a bit too old for them.

Then again, maybe they were older in the original (they all look it) but the ages were reduced for the US release to appeal to more kids.
