  • What a treasure ....I love Mary Travers ( and Peter, Paul and Mary ! )Thanks for posting this

  • Powerful. I hope Laura Nyro liked how they performed her song.

  • @timnmaryann874 I agree! Laura Nyro was incredible.

  • damn! I was in Sydney in 1970!! and I missed it!! double damn!! thanks for sharing.

  • What a team!

  • Thank you Laura (...and Youtube)

  • Bee utiful. These guys were the best. But they got old like me but their music will carry on, hopefully mine will too

  • Mary Travers - R.I.P

  • RIP dear Mary

  • ave

it was a time where the singers were close to the public ,

and the songs and words have a meaning :

helas c est un temps révolu

    now all is forbidden !

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • I never knew they covered this. It's great!

  • @manthasagittarius covered it??? They didn't "cover" anything! This was the 60ies, people were original then!

  • @KaisaLisa Hey, hey, I was there too, my lady. They covered it just as BS&T covered it, because Laura Nyro wrote it. Myself, as a performer of anything I could get my hands on and learn, I don't much like the concept of "cover" either -- I just think of my list as my repertory. But it's the word that seems to be used now.

  • Anyone know the source of this video? Is it available on DVD?

  • What a great piece of music history. This performance on the site of the incomplete Sydney Opera House. Thanks for posting.

  • They paid $3,000 to Laura Nyro in 1964 for the rights to record this song, quite a sum for a seventeen-year-old high school kid, especially back then. They knew a great songwriter when they saw one!

  • so funny to watch the audience, not like today. very subdued. I remember it being that way, though.

  • What a treasure this clip is! Thanks for sharing.

  • Please excuse my English. To the Point: This group is also dear to my heart here in the Czech Republic in the middle of Europe. I listen to them very much. Still, we have You Tube. Very nice listening. Thank

  • Folk music is so powerful because it by nature a very honest peaceful style of music, using words and lovley melodies to make a statement. The more honest and true the statement the more clear the the truth is made apparent. That was why I think Peter Paul and Mary were so loved.

  • Sing it girl. You rock Mary.

  • Fairy Queen Mary, RIP. Us Hard Rockers treasure you.

  • I had no idea they'd ever played this song. Great version, and now having special poignancy given the early loss of Mary.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Wish she would've gone naturally, and not by cancer :(

    <3 you, Mary...

  • @HorrorPixieMassacre

well, some would say that's still naturally!

  • the great david clayton thomas of blood , sweat , and tears owns this song.

He still does a heck of job doing in.. mostly in that outpost north of the empire.

  • What a find!!!

  • ...really knew how to put on the show...miss you, Mary...

  • great lyrics, great voice, great performance, great song, great time everything is great.

  • Beautiful.

    Memorable

    And now,......Historical.

    But, wonderful.

  • Mary Travers´ Great and beautiful voice, as you said man, plenty of talent....

    We´ll miss her...From Mexico.

  • This version came out well before B S & Tears' hit. I loved this song the first time I heard P P & M sing it, and it gets better each time. I proposed to Mary after a Louisville concert in the early '80's. My wife had to blow it and tell her we were married. Mary shook my hand and said, "Sorry, but I could never be "the other woman." Then she gave a hearty laugh and hugged me just the same.

  • @bigal6868 Ah, what a great memory of this beautiful woman with a magical voice. I listened to that great harmony as a teenager (that dates me) and tried to imitate it.

  • Miss her so much.Love to you there Mary

  • I love Mary's voice, but I especially love watching her perform. She is so passionate. Peter, Paul and Mary all were. Thanks for this vid..

  • can you feel it ? Just love

  • stop it at 2:33.. That picture says it all.. Her intensity and emotion all in a beautiful wrapper.. We love you Mary...

  • What a voice......I saw PP&M perform so many times....They were "pure gold"

  • Mary at the height of her beauty and vocal talent - wasn't she indescribable? Weren't they beyond amazing?I cannot put into words what it felt like just now to watch that clip. What a gift utube is.

  • @ctcheadcounselor Weren't they beyond amazing ? Yes Sir , that's what i wanted to say , peace

  • Does anybody know if Peter, Paul, and Mary ever covered a Beatles tune?

Many acts in the sixties did (especially, groups that did not prolifically write many songs of their own). I think they could have done wonderful versions of And I Love Her, Nowhere Man, Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere, The Fool on the Hill, Blackbird, or Mother Nature's Son. These songs would have suited them fine.

  • Talent! a very rare characteristic in the current modern music industry - Formula's and $ = Best Business not best music ...have a listen to sheer passion and talent here!!! Now getting recognition after a couple of decades....Mike Biggs Portland Dorset UK...youtube v=jrn3UJscTp8

  • OMG I love this version...and the strength of Mary's voice!!! my god.

  • This song was written by Laura Nyro. She sold it to Peter Paul and Mary for $5,000 when she was 18. She wrote "Eli's Coming" which 3 dog night did, a bunch that the 5th dimension recorded and a couple that Barbara Steisand probably takes credit for. She basically quit at 24 and died at 49 of cancer...same age as her mom. I'm sure Peter Paul and Mary made a ton off of her song.

  • Mary, I sure hope theres a heaven, and I hope you're in it so I can hear you sing again someday. I love you, but if this is all there is than we are in a miserable circumstance. I Cor. 15: 12-22

  • @Tnlrop there is and I know Mary is there waiting to sing here friends home one by one. Young and beautiful again.

  • She was a rare beatnik beauty.

  • fav o rite. thanks for posting.

  • damn i'm 55 and just found out ppm recorded this and i thought it was blood sweat tears that did it 1st.lots of covers out there i guess,1924 or so sophie tucker i ain't got nobody then david lee roth etc.

  • @steve89z Actually the song was written by Laura Nyro in 1967 . Blood Sweat & Tears covered it on their 1969 album. A lot of other artists also had success singing her material including: The 5th Dimension-"Stoned Soul Picnic", Sweet Blindness", Wedding Bell Blues" and "Blowing Away". Nyro also wrote Eli's Coming" and "Stoney End" which of course were big hits for Three Dog Night, and Barbara Streisand...Search You Tube for "Save The Country" by Laura Nyro. A great live performance from 1969!

  • @shadlav thanks

  • will ja nicht nerven aber bin einsam wer hat lust zu quatschen

  • I've been looking for a clip of them doing this song forever. Thanks for posting! Best version of this song ever. Mary sang so freakin' loud, yet people in other threads keep asking why she never had her own microphone!

I Can't get use to Peter and Paul straying from their beatnik look, though...

  • So they wanted to dress nicely? It's all part of showmanship, and of maturity.

  • I loved Mary Travers. My high school friends thought I was nuts having Mary's solo albums in my mostly heavy metal collection. It worked for me...Black Sabbath...Ozzy...Motorhead...Mary Travers

  • @999Atwood: You knew something that few understood. Black Sabbath carried the legacy of protest and anti-war songs from the 60's folk singers in through 70's, albeit in a new musical style (with a hammer and bell, so to speak!) Ozzy said Sabbath were the last hippie band, and he was right.

  • @thesithempire

I think you are right there. I was interested in all the 60's folk anti-war music & did pick up on the theme with War Pigs & so on later in jr high. My uncle lived with us when he came home from Vietnam & he was in really bad mental condition. I think I was trying to understand it all as early as 8-10 years old through the music.

  • @999Atwood There probably wouldn't be Heavy Metal without people like Mary. She helped pave the way that those groups later crossed. Jimmy Page was a folk music fan. Sandy Denny sang on "Battle of Evermore"

  • @TDS4UT Yes, that 60's folk has something very powerful about it. I was just old enough in the late 60's-early 70's to realize by my older cousins & uncles were in this place called Vietnam and could die there. I think that is what attracted me to folk, I knew a lot of this music had something to do with where they were.

  • @999Atwood I lost a cousin in the Vietnam War. He was drafted. Not everyone that went over there was gung ho like Rambo as the media would like to portray it. There are many Vietnam War veterans that are fans of PP&M, especially Mary Travers. The veterans of that war, who were drafted, were a lot more open about sharing what went on. Today it's volunteer and the veterans are a lot more tight lipped. I talked to a guy who served in both Iraq wars. He said the Iraqi Freedom is a crock.

  • @TDS4UT War is a snare & a racket. When the men responible for sending kids to war also own major shares in companies who profit from the hardware of war....well that is a problem. No doubt in my mind it's about controlling the natural resources in the middle east & defense contractor profits. The war on terror is the biggest scam ever pulled on America.

  • @999Atwood Yeah I was a metal head too but still loved me some Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkel and Peter Paul & Mary. My friends didn't get it either. :)

  • @demonhoopa Yeah, why limit ourselves. I really like the 60's folk movement, all of it. So many of those records available at garage sales for a quarter too. I always pick them up when they are in great condition.

  • @999Atwood what perfect taste...

  • Rest in peace, Mary Travers. Your music lives forever.

  • Exquisite. Saw them at Wolf Trap a few years ago and they hadn't lost any of their idealism. She was such an exotic looking beauty in a cool beatnik sort of way.

  • Back in '62 my mother, bless her soul, bought the first PP&M album...it is still in my heart. Bless Mary, Peter and Paul....folk never forgets

  • mary as a fan of the trio you will be missed two fold that glorious voice will be welcomed in heaven love and peace ....Darlene

  • have you ever had one of those moments when something pierces thru you on?I was reading the google and msn,in the same minute when some glitch in it send the script of her death just barely after the fact of her passing. This woman, trio, had been so close to me.She was like a second nanny to me,her songs were sung to me as a baby to go to sleep and loved the best.Miss my nanny more than mommy.

  • Does anyone think that Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey will continue to perform without her? I wonder.....It seems a shame to have the whole thing discontinue when they fought so hard for equality, justice, and for sending us such strong positive messages. Please don't stop, Peter and Noel Paul!

  • those two?do not doubt it,they will do it for her, they know she would want no less if she still had her feet on this Earth she loved so much

  • Good! Hope they do! :)

  • What a spectacular voice and how appropriate to listen to this performance today, when we've lost a wonderful voice. One child born in the world to carry on . . . We miss you Mary!

  • Mary you had a voice of an angel here on this earth... you will be missed.... but the gates had open to your wonderful voice and the rest of us still have you right here in our hearts.

  • I grew up with PPM and their great music on our records, 8 tracks and listening to them in the car. Such happy memories and a beautiful woman who sang her beautiful voice and fought for freedom and justice. RIP Mary

  • I remember SCREAMING this song - so many times - right after my dear Daddy died!

  • You must have been in a lot of pain! I hope that you're okay.

  • My heart is broken. Mary's beauty and energy led the group and their music changed lives and the world.

  • Wow. Thanks, for all the beautiful music, Mary. It is for ever.

  • I remember singing this with my folk group in high school...Mary, I miss you so much. Thanks for coming into our lives.

  • Grew up with PPM, such fond memories.

We'll try to carry on. RIP Mary.

  • Peter Paul and Mary...their music completely changed my life and shaped my musical voice...I raise my glass to you and know we all miss you more than words can express...

  • Yes, mary - and this child has been born.

Thank God and thank you for your dedication, your voice, your music. RIP
