  • I may be incorrect but I believe that a young Andy Williams was OD's the singing Voice for Betty Joan Perske (PKA: Becall)?

  • @PeterRossi44 Quote from IMDb: Although this legend about Andy Williams and Lauren Bacall is so deeply entrenched that you'll find it repeated even in some film reference books, it's not true. Director Howard Hawks, when asked about this, explained that he had indeed planned to have Andy Williams sing for Bacall, but after hearing Bacall sing during the rehearsals for the scene he abandoned that plan and ended up using Bacall's own voice. (Source: Hawks on Hawks by Joseph McBride)

  • @MrMudak1000 Indeed we have not destroyed any such thing. If you want English not to evolve, then I take it you talk like Shakespeare? Otherwise, has your education been so limited that you don't understand that many words have different meanings? Like 'hip', 'cool' - do you insist on their literal meanings too?

Gay is (or was until you homophobes repossessed it to abuse us), the *only* positive colloquialism for homosexual. Every single other one is offensive, uncalled for, insulting, like you

  • @DerekWilliamsMusic

Every time a homosexual person is on television filthy innuendo comes out of their hypocritical mouths so don't start on about offensive words.Keep your shame to yourself and stop parading it around.

  • @73380401 You lie.

  • Wow!

  • what does he mean with

    ... was i gay ...

I can't imagine that he means homosexual.

Sorry for my bad englisch :)

  • @jay210592

He means merry or joyous, the original meaning of the word.

  • @subg88 Someone actually had to ask that?? I despair of people sometimes. LOL

  • Man he sure knows how to get'em like Bond!

  • The guitar player is the famous Eddy Lang

  • @JohnnyWykes

Eddie Lang died 11 years before this movie was shot...

  • @UkeRichard Quite right - Sorry I forgot that, he died only a couple of years after his friend Bix B. but long before his collabator Joe Venuti - the guy looks and plays like him though - could it be Ivor Mairants (I didn't know he'd ever been in movies tho)

  • @JohnnyWykes

I don't know Ivor Mairants, but a Google search reveals some resemblance so you may well be right. He is playing a 6-strings guitar on every pic that I saw though and the guitarist in this video plays a tenor guitar (4-strings, tuned in fifths). Still, it could be him.

  • @jb336me really? Well me too! I just found out from my mom that I'm related to him. (Cristal Carmichael) :-)

  • BATMAN IS A BETTER SING THIS SONG

  • Just saw this film properly for the first time, there's that scene when he stood up... it really caught me off guard how short he was

Regardless, he is a top class pop musician - probably my favourite

  • Bogie, Hoagy and Betty Bacall: it just don't get better than this.

  • *Beautiful* Lauren Bacall a TOTAL class act! Hoagy you are okay too! ♥

  • ya, don't you just love these old movies that taught people how to think and how to act, taught people that smoking is cool, glamorous, popular, and normal, and taught people to join the military because it's glamorous to wear the uniform, kill people, and get killed so that rich people don't have to send their kids to do it. THANKS, Bogey. You did a GREAT job seducing the goyim into servitude and self destruction!

  • Dreadful... why does "JAZZ" mean destroying the composer's music and only honoring the words??? ...It's why I lose interest in jazz post 1932 (circa)!

  • @Randidan

Hoagy was a genius. Destroyed jazz!? He wrote some of the best jazz tunes of all time!

  • Like everything else...Batman does it better!

  • carmichaels in my fam no joke my last name is carmichael

  • @jb336me I'm reading his book, "Sometimes I Wonder"...great stuff be proud!

    He's my favorite song-writer.

  • @robertgaudlitz This is far from being an original version. Am I blue was written by Harry Akst and Grant Clarke and published in 1929.

  • @UkeRichard wow, thank you for setting me straight there :) i would hate to suffer under delusion about any fact a second longer then necessary :D

  • @robertgaudlitz-But it's Hoagy Carmichael! And was 1st recorded by Ethel Waters. The video is on youtube.

  • Jesus white people are terrifying

  • @PostWhateverMusic

That's why they call us spooks.

  • In Casino Royale, Ian Fleming described James Bond as resembling a "young Hoagy Carmichael."

  • I never don't love her.

  • Batman did it better....

  • @Intermixi HELL YEAH :D

  • just charming

the ghost of a smile from Mr Bogart

  • The guy behind Hoagy is playing a Martin 4 string TENOR GUITAR.

  • Hoagy Carmichael was such a brilliant songwriter! And Lauren Bacall? Wow!

  • Wow...all those black faces mixed in the crowd! Nice Django touch too....I need this flick on DVD.

  • Wow...all those black faces mixed in the crowd!

  • it is said, that this isnt her own voice, but sung by Andy Williams. Anyway- I like it !

  • what a total piece of ass....Lauren Bacal... was she like 21 years old in this? She would be considered hot in any era

  • She sang it fairly well in the film, along with "How Little We Know", a Carmichael song. If you've ever heard her 2 Broadway tries you'd think differently. She had a vocal range of about 8 notes. Good voice or bad she was an incredible actress in so many movies over the years.

  • I'm blue because it was 29years ago today that we lost Hoagy.

    (11-22-1899 – 12-27-1981)

  • pure class 100%

  • Hoagy Carmichael is the original Piano Man !

  • I fully agree with tuxguys...the movie is one of my favourites but Hoagy is priceless in every scene he's in.

Now can that smooth voice melt butter or what.

  • @MrPlappologdue

Thank you for sharing dear Gianni.

Wonderful movie! I love the scenes.

    And I love the song.

    Have a wonderful day!..kisses

  • OMG She's got the most amazing voice I've ever heard...

  • Wasn't that Andy Williams singing for Lauren?

  • no one else finds this inaudibly low?

  • @djduckie I can hardly hear it too. It isnt in your head.

  • @djduckie ever hear "Sweet Home Alabama"?

  • @GrandFunker LOL

  • Happy Birthday Betty Bacall!

  • thanks for the upload!

  • Written by Harry Akst, this song "Am I Blue" had been used in many films. Great treasure!

  • Awesome! TY

  • What a classic. I love this film. :)

  • Lauren Bacall has a deeper voice than little Hoagy, funny!

  • how cool is the tenor guitar (with little Brazilian figure towards end), yeah, who's in the band?

  • I love this.

  • A Magic moment, but frankly speaking, nowadays we,ve done far better with this dam vuvuzella, isn't it?..

  • I love how Hoagy reacts to Betty's voice. :-)

  • My single favorite moment in this classic film... a textbook example for aspiring singers of how to embellish a melody.

  • You notice that bogie is the only one wearing black in the place?

  • Wouldn't you like to have been with Howard Hawks and his cinematographer when they composed this scene and later in the editing room when they put it together? It is one of the most nuanced and carefully crafted sequences you'll ever seen in a movie - the silent but knowing flirtation between Bogey and Bacall stitched together with Hogey's song.

  • @biggon711 ...Suddenly..a blinding flash...a bullet took the top of his head off....Hahaha..So I picked up a bad piece of "trivia" somewhere along the way. Wow..that was cold..."retard"??? Really lit your fuse didn't I??

  • @garymichael1950 Apologies all around... Had a real... real bad day. Thanks for calling me on it. (classy way to do it, I might add.

  • @biggon711 Not a problem, my friend. We all have our bad days. Besides, we both obviously like good songwriting.

  • Beautiful

  • i hate modern music

  • Who are the members of the band? Anyone know? Anyone? Please post info if you know. Great stuff, Hoagy was the best!

  • the great Hoagy Carmichael!!!

  • Here's a great bit of trivia for you. The singing voice of Lauren Bacall was provided by.....wait for it.....Andy Williams. Yep. True story.

  • Hoagy♥

  • I watdh this movie before I leave New Jersey for the Florida keys.

  • Thank you, Hogey and Bogey and Baby Bacall.

  • @eheaven3 It's Hoagy.

  • I saw this movie years ago and became a fan of bogey and hoagy ever since.

A sublime film with sublime music.

The version hong kong blues is a killer

  • Yes there is!

    Tony Starlight's supper club

in Portland,Oregon in an logically named neighborhood known as Hollywood.

Tony has a swell voice and the wit of Jack Benny plus he has a parade of Dame's

that sing like Peggy Lee and Julie London

and Dudes that croon like Torme, Bennett and Sinatra.

  • Wonderful music ..... thanks:))

  • You cannot find any "joint" like this one, very few piano bars anywhere. Love the movie and this vid, thanx for posting!!!!

  • They don't make moments (or cinematography by Sid Hickox) like this anymore. Great clip.

  • Hoagy does well, ... for a lawyer.

  • What a priceless moment... I love this movie, and its stars... but Carmichael owns every scene he's in.

  • Hoagy was incredible...

  • love this! What a dame..
