  • That's the absolute worst place to have your knife. Trip on anything and that knife is going to want to puncture your throat. Bla bla bla, your sheath is not the end all for a knife, your knife can still puncture your sheath. It may not even need to if you fall on that thing hard enough.. this should be common sense... BAD IDEA

  • have you done a review on this knife

  • Colhane that is a sweet setup,i am going to work on one with those features.keep those videos coming!

  • Comment removed

  • Yet another neck-breaker lanyard without a break-away.

How many pounds of force can your neck take? 550lbs? 1100lbs? 10lbs? 5lbs?

  • @mryellow123 If anyone is concerned about this simply cut the tops of the loop and melt the ends back together to form a break away. This will considerably shorten the length of cord you have in one piece though. I have been using this for ten years and it has never snagged on anything.

  • @Colhane You are both right but it's like saying I dont need seatbelts, been driving for 30 years, never had a accident in my life.. still countless people die each day cause of it.

  • thats sweet

  • Well thought-out, well-presented. A+!

  • Make more videos

  • Where did you buy the knife? Your copy where did you buy it

  • @bushcraftbrothers737 I bought mine from Newt Livesay back around 2001 IIRC back when he was still making knives. I don't know what the status is on current production or availability. There are lots of similar knives that work well as a basis for a kit. This is just the one I have and it has served me very well over the years.

  • Very good info! I just started carrying a neck knife, and i have some problems. Don't you worry about strangulation? also, my knife keeps moving around a lot. And then one of my sheaths got quite loose. Do you know a simple way to fix that? Would be grateful for help.

  • @sharpknifesedge Thanks, glad you found it informative. I carry the knife inside the shirt and have never had it snag on anything in ten years. Without knowing how your sheath is made I would have a hard time helping oyu fix it. I know that Kydex can be reheated and pressed tighter if you have a proper press.

  • love this kit! right up my ally. I will probobly make one. :)

  • I'm glad to see the milk bags...I was afraid you were gonna pull out a condom. I quit watching vids when I see that. There are so much better containers, such as those milk bags. Better yet would be a 1 liter Aqua-pouch.

    Nice small kit.

  • that adjustable neck cord is very dangerous, i have seen people get choked and caught up in them, you should rethink that

  • Very nice dude, this kit inspired me to make my own version for my neck knife. This is very great also as a edc survival because I know many people dont carry their pack all the time and if they do their great.

  • Where can I get a piece of rubber such as the one in your video?

  • @displaynamechris Bike repair shops usually have all sorts of used inner tubes that they throw away. That's where I get all of mine.

  • Whats the knife called???

  • @multitoollover It is called the NRGS, it was made by Newt Livesay.

  • @Colhane thanks im probably going to buy it and copy your idea if thats ok

  • @multitoollover That's why I put it out there. There are many knives that would work well with a kit like this if you have trouble finding the NRGS.

  • Perhaps someone else has already told you: THIS IS GREAT! I am going to copy it this instant! What is the thing called "Hotspark made of??? Is this some kind of firesteel or even something better???

  • @commanderrain The Hot Spark is a small ferro rod you can find through the Boy Scouts of America or BSA for short. They are small and fit nicely in small kits. Glad you liked the kit and video it really works well for me.

  • @Colhane I got one of those at my Scout camp, and they work rally well for this. great idea.

  • Love the kit, well thought out and comprehensive. However I'm not convinced by hanging it with para-cord, unless of course you emptied out the core (which is not mentioned in the video).

  • @Jackflesh79 No, it has all of its core in it. I don't worry about it getting snagged as it rides inside my shirt. If I'm ever in position, like climbing a tree, that I was worried about it I would stow it in a pocket. In all the years I've been wearing neck knives (10+) I have never had one snagged. I wear my urban neckers on ball chain to prevent someone using it to choke me but in the bush I would rather have the supply of cordage.

  • Excellent! Very thoughtful. All your videos are great.

  • Hi, great videos on your channel, thanks very much. I saw this one about a year ago and "rediscovered" it recently. Two things I would greatly appreciate: 1) any updates you've made to your neck knife kit since this video and 2) a close up look at the knot system you used to make the doubled cord sit flat and be adjustable. Many thanks!

  • I like doing mountain biking. Thanks for sharing the info. To keep me updated: Added to favorites, already suscribed and like button has been pressed. Keep doing this stuff my friend.

    Best regards.

  • @rottencranberry Thanks for your comments. Mountain bikers need to carry survival gear and very few actually do. A bike can get you way out there, one wrong turn or serious mistake and you could easily get stuck for the night.

  • Where can you buy potassium permagnate? Thanks for any info!

  • @getdownbro Sorry I can't be much help. I buy it here in Brazil at the local pharmacy.

  • @getdownbro Any pharmacy should be able to order the stuff if they don't have it in the store. If you live in the US it is not a controlled substance.

  • Newt us a friend of mine I use the NRGS.

  • Dave, thank you for producing yet another informative video. I used it as a plan for mine. With a few variations it is the same kit. I found a coulple of useful pieces of kit that you may want to check out. EZE-lap has a knife sharpener that is about one third the size of a credit card. It fits easily against the sheath and works well. I use "Never Blow Out" prank birthday candles (ala Ranger Rick) . I slipped in five, wire ties. they lay flat and work well on shelter construction.

  • @willtry2survive I'm headed back to the US in Oct and plan to order some EZ-Lap products. I recently added 6 chlorine tablets for treating water to mine. I was out of them back in the US when I shot this video. I use this kit very often and hope you find yours as useful. What knife did you base it on?

  • Great vid. I got some good ideas from this. Thank u.

  • incredible kit!

  • i bought the same knife mine didnt really come sharp did yours

  • @nightwalker2830 No it didn't come all that sharp. If a knife is well made I don't really care if it comes sharp because I'm going to make that happen. A factory edge will only last a few days anyway under normal use. As long as the grinds and heat treat are good that edge is going to be "all me" anyway. My NRGS takes and holds a wicked sharp edge and has been a very consistent performer over the years.

  • @nightwalker2830 what is the best way to sharpen this knife?

  • @nightwalker2830 what do you intend to do with it? grind ,tool and ,what you do are all your choice expiriment

    best of luck J.S.

  • @mrsvinarich26 i plan to use it as bushcraft and use the knife for also everyday uses.

  • @nightwalker2830 try a convex grind or if you find it uncomfortable switch to a scandi grind. i personally use whetstones but i may reccomend a spydero sharpmaker A.G. Russell makes a similar product hope this was good info.

  • Are those ranger bands? They can be used for signal fire.

  • @2KARGARAGE There just bicycle inner tube rubber. They can be used as tinder to light a signal fire but not on their own.

  • great video, I get a but paranoid putting stuff around my neck but under the clothes should be safe

  • i also did the same thing as you i added a firesteel to mine and a light thats about it i was thinking about adding needles and some thread. umm can you make a video of how you have your cord and how you have it setup

  • this knife are still in production right?

  • Hi, can you show how you arrange the paracord so that it slides the way that does? Do you still prefer that knife?

  • Dave, I like your neck knife set up and I have a question about your BSA Hotspark. Can you please tell me what it's dimensions are and is it a Ferrel rod? I've found where to by it, but no info there.

  • @SurviveN2 The BSA Hotspark measures 2.5 inches. The ferro rod portion is about 1 inch by 3/16. Just scrape it with something sharp and harder than it is and it makes sparks. They are small and hard to light natural tinder with without some practice. I recommend you buy two and use one for practice.

  • @Colhane Thanks for the info, at <$3 each, yea buying two is no problem. Shipping will probably cost me more than the two Hotsparks will.......LOL. Take Care :-))

  • awesome video !

  • While this kit may be great and all, I don't like the idea of putting something around my neck that is stronger than my neck ... imagine e.g. you're running or sliding down a slope or whatever and the paracord gets caught in a tree branch ...

  • @aseglkj I only have it out when in camp. 99% of the time it is inside my shirt for that reason.

  • I wish I could find out more about that knife.

  • Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant! I ve had the knife for 12 plus yrs, and like you I do like the knife very much.. I have added some jimping to the top of the knife for a little more control. As time goes by the finish wears off so I use gun blue to restore its rust protection and its original luster. (G/96 brand seems to work best) Avoid the edge, it is an acid, neutralize it, oiler up good, and shes good as new. Again BRILLIANT !

  • do i hear gun shots a 6:17

  • @mf863722 Yes there is a gun range about a mile from that area.

  • You should add tin foil it light compact and you can make a bowl or cup

  • Fantastic video!!! Keep them coming.

  • did u use the back of the knife for striking?

  • @nick617617 Normally yes but the back of the NRGS is rounded off. There's a small spot at the base of the blade I use for striking. No damage yet.

  • Very cool survival kit! looking to make my first knife soon, and think I'll incorporate some of your ideas.

  • this is probaubly the best review of a neck knife and neck knife survival kit on youtube. could you do a video on how to wrap the handel or a close up on the knife? keep these awsome vids comming.

  • This video inspired me to make my own necknife kit. I would do a video on it but I just hate the sound of my voice. :-)

  • what do you do if you accidently looses your knife? dont see any snaplock on the sheath.

  • @Skrattmannen91 The sheath retains the knife very well. The knifes shape is molded into the kydex. The knife does not even shift let alone fall out.

  • Did you say sheeple at 6:16?lol

  • @thewizardking13 Yes. There are opinions in this world I have no respect for whatsoever.

  • @Colhane LOL.same here.Just was wondering if I'd heard what I thought I'd heard,and if it meant what I thought it meant.Way to slip that in there.lol.

  • @Colhane X2 on Sheeple lol

  • good little bit of kit you got there

  • A+ for the Video

    A+ for the Neck Knife

  • nice vide, i might have missed it, but what size is the blade on that knife, im considering buying the carson kneck knife, but its only inch blade so im not so sure about it

  • @jhynesyahoo I think that blade is 3 1/4". If you google Newt Livesay you can find the specs on his page

  • @jhynesyahoo It just happens to be hanging next to me on the bedpost. The cutting edge is 3 1/4 inches (8.5 cm if you're into that kind of thing). A one inch blade is pretty small. I have a Blind Horse Tiger Knapp with a 2.5 inch blade and that is about as small as I would like to go for a general purpose necker. As long as you have a decent handle you can do alot with a small knife.

  • Very impressive and original kit.

  • Great info. Can anyone tell me how to make the cord adjustable? I've seen the two slip-knots over the main cord option, but can't figure out how to do that. Are there step by step instructions anywhere? Thanks.

  • i hear an air plane

  • @MrFerretlover There was a small airfield about three miles away.

  • Photon has had a Photon Freedom out for a bit that you can get with an optional covert nose addition which will protect the LED. Also comes with a regular on/off switch, plus squeeze function.

  • @unionblade I have an Inova on there now that gives me hi/low beam and blink. It also has one touch on/off for hands free operation.

  • Mac, Im in love with my BHK Tiger Knapp! I´ll be posting a review on it soon plus another "Thank-you-BCUSA-friends-and-BHK video" on my channel! Now I gotta figure a kit for it! Sth like yours, I guess! Bay the way, have you tried the pouches yet?

  • well done a real barebone kit .just one question will a bk-11 be good to use as a backup survival knive?

  • @darkarchon777 The BK-11 is one I would consider for a kit like this.

  • The only thing I see about this setup (that may cause a problem) is the way your paracord is adjustable, there is a possibility that it will snag (the knife and sheath) and pull the cord tight around you neck. it is nice to be able to adjust this but, there are safer ways to do it. for instance, tie two slip knots over the main cord at each end of the cord. Just a thought! Love this overall setup!!!!

  • @italia300 In the bush I wear it inside my tucked in shirt unless I'm in camp. If it does get snagged, I do have a knife right there as well.

  • Do you think you can show how to make that Knife Kit..? Like a step by step guide... It looks very useful...

  • great video. i really like this setup. the low profile of it is great!

  • great video. i really like this setup. the low profile of it is great!

  • Have you considered using Chlorine Dioxide Tablets ( for water purification? They are very compact and seem to kill all the nasties.

  • great point of view about the topic, agree with you! thanks for all the info.

what i dont now is what brand/model is your knife?

  • what is it u have wraped around the sheath toi hold all that in? isit bike tire innertube?

  • @mcelhenyma Yes, that's just bike inner tube.

  • @Colhane thats brilliant

  • I liked your neck knife system. I will incorporate it as well. I really like the way you use the rubber inner tubing along wiht the LED light.

  • Dear Natureboy, Where are you getting those milk bags? Struck me as weird hearing it, but then I've never seen them.

  • @Brandtalones

Check wherever you would shop for newborn baby stuff. The bags are good in that they have a double zip-lock seal and are designed to have a flat bottom when full. I didn't come up with the idea IIRC I read about it on the Bladeforums Wilderness and Survival Skills board.

  • @Colhane Thank you, Sir. I have to agree with the "sheeple" bit. I remember eating a banana in a school hallway, trimming as I do with my no. 8 Opinel. I had the knife at my side, blade up, when this young fellow comes along, eyes popping out of his skull at my "brandishment."

Didn't it used to be common practice to swap pocketknives between men back in the day? 'Twas a friendly gesture to see how others organized their "kit."

  • @Colhane haha take a leak i saw u give a grin after that

  • @Colhane hey how do you make a hot spark

  • @Brandtalones you could try unlubricated condoms. They are small, light, and hold a lot of water just stick it in a sock and fill it up.

  • did u call the people Sheeple ??/

  • @grappler321

No, not all of them. I called the ones who react emotionally to people carrying knives in the back country "sheeple". To me a knife is basic equipment for planet earth. There was a time when every man carried a knife of some sort. I think we have lost something as a culture by universally regarding anyone who carries a knife as dangerous.

  • @Colhane

I carry my small carving sheath knife, and my large survival knife at all times. It looks funny to some people. I even pick up the kids at elementary wearing it. Until a policeman tells me I cannot wear it, I continue to do so. If I ever got a ticket for carrying it, it would be minimal, I would think.

  • @Colhane I run into this often. i grew up in the country and my father always carries a knife. most people seemed too or it was not uncommon. I live in a metropolitan area now and i still utilize my knife as a tool. when i wear my belt knife i notice i get looks more often than not. i have switched to a pocket knife or folding knife and that seems to alleviate this issue. I would never get into a hard work situation or back country where i did not have a good belt knife with me.

  • @Colhane Hell, there was a point you weren't considered a man unless you carried one, knives are a basic tool that everyone should carry, I amazed the hell some one who was trying to change their tire on the road when the other blew out and wrapped the axel, since i always have either my Mora Clipper or CRKT Desert, i used the desert cut the tire.

  • Very impressive. You seem to have incorporated everything you could really use into a small package around your neck. And though it is a small thing, I really appreciate your strategy using a whistle to keep your kit in a stealth status. Very well thought out and executed my friend. Thumbs up...and a new subscriber. ~Wolf

  • @FatDaddy4Fun ......"I really appreciate your strategy using a whistle to keep your kit in a stealth status. Very well thought out and executed my friend. Thumbs up...and a new subscriber....."

    I second this comment!

  • awesome !

  • Fantastic small kit.

  • Very nice presentation.Great job. Thank you.

  • Dave that's an awesome set-up! Very comprehensive and very well thought out! 5/5

    Brian

  • Dave, fine kit 5/5*. carried neck lite

but nrver thought of putting on that way. thanks much for info.----JC

  • Very well done. I have swaped out candles for TRICK candles- they don't go out in the wind.

    I enjoy your descriptive style.

  • hi colhane.

very nice neck knife kit you have and its small i am hoping that the kit i am working on will be that small. but i can not get the bsa fire starter here in wales uk.

there is a scout store in usa that sell them for $2.99 but they want $25 postage

so i wont be getting one there.

keep the videos comming and best wishes to you from wales uk

  • Very well thought out. As a suggestion: carry it cross body. Not around your neck. Prevents you from being strangled. Personally I prefer to carry Ferro rod, compass and light on a separate lanyard. Means that I don't have all my eggs in one basket. It's worth adding a AMK signal mirror to the back of the knife scabbard. Also may I suggest MP1 tablets rather than Pot permang?

  • In normal use this is my back up system. It is very rare that I have to dig into the contents of this kit for my normal needs. In the bush I carry other gear on my person as well - Recta DP-2, Clor-in 1 tablets, ferro rod & treated cotton, Starflash signal mirror etc. This kit is my redundant gear.

  • @leighrate If he's being strangled, he has a knife to cut the cord. :) hahah.

  • is there any place i can find this knife online?

  • I don't think Newt Livesay is making therm anymore but you can still find them secondhand occasionally. If I was to make a new one I'd look at the Becker Necker or the RAT Izula. You might have to have a straight sided kydex sheath made.

  • not legal in cali

  • Knife laws vary the world over. Big Boy rules, you have to decide if carrying something that might save your life is worth the risk of having someone decide it was a weapon. Here in the bush this is the smallest knife I carry. If someone thinks this is a weapon they will really have a problem with the 16 inch machete.

  • Thanks for the reply and just to be clear, I enjoy your reviews. Just letting the people in CA know about our rules. Best of luck to you and keep truckin

  • @koky5150 Smaller than the plam of your hand, is legal in CA for concealed carry. Larger, it must be in plain sight.

  • Its so perfect having a neck knife in combat or survival ... so easy to pull out

  • i just made a new sheath for my buck 119 made of leather orange duct tape and copper to put on the tip and to go over the blade to keep it from slashing through i also aded a sealed pack of matches

  • Great kit ! .I fixed a space blanket on the back of mine and a coupe of condoms. They weigh nothing and are great to for carrying water.Keep up the good work :D

  • hopefully you use no spermicidal ones

  • of course - if its good enough for the sas then its good enough for me.

  • Asa married man (of the cloth), living in Brazil... there is no way I want to explain why I carry a condom in my kit. "To carry water....right..."

Here I normally carry a five liter bag they sell for carrying gasoline. That always struck me as a dangerous idea, but they make great emergency water carriers. They roll down to about the size of a 35mm film canister, too large for the neck knife but easily fit in other kits.

  • Mr Colhane - Sir...I was in no way advocating for you to carry the same item on your neck kit.If you are a man of the cloth - married or both-(I do understand) it does not enable you to carry such items..The topic after all is neck knife kits.Condoms make great water carriers - fact. Many soldiers carry said water carriers as a survival back up because they do work.I will continue to carry my kit and if it saves my life or someone elses then so be it.God bless you sir.

    Regards Jango2020.

  • I was only commenting on why I don't include a condom in my kit as a water carrier. It is a workable option, just not for me for personal reasons.

  • where can you purchase that knife?

  • I don't know if Newt is making these anymore. You would have to do a search.

  • I like the 'Adjustable paracord" at 0:58

yet I cant see how you have it rigged up. If you already have not done a video on it. Could you possibly show us how your was done.

I have mine adjustable aswell but its with the use of a pushbutton stopper.

    Thx Dave.

    Rob.

  • Rob,

Stop the video at about 4 min 10 seconds. The cord is looped through the holes on the sheath and doubles back to the back side and under the upper rubber sleeve, poking our between the upper and lower. It runs between the two water bags. To adjust it I just grab the knot and pull to make it shorter.

  • Cool.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave.

  • This Neck Knife Kit is awsome!! Great video!!!

  • Cool, Survivorman 2 :)

You should do an internet show, or do you? I just found this vid

  • How much does this weigh, and what would you consider the maximum weight of a comfortable neck kit? Thanks.

  • I really don't know how much it weighs. It is very comfortable, especially with the double loop of paracord to spread out the weight. The key to a kit like this, if you want to wear it concealed is keeping it thin.

  • Those milk bags are a great addition to my kit. Tested out a couple and they really hold up. Thanks for the idea.

  • I think I picked that tip up on Bladeforums, it's not mine.

  • nice kit.

  • I got a RAT 3 and Izula, It's too short of handle and the 1095 isn't as strong on the RC3-did you say that was a Becker Necker?

  • The knife in the video is a Newt Livesay NRGS. It's made of 1095.

  • stay away from RAT IZULA!

  • Why do you say that?

  • Why whats wrong with RAT?

  • RC3 is kewl, Izula is too small and the blade isn't all the great for anything!

  • thanks for the video colhane. I ordered the knife and received my NRGS knife about a week ago and I'm having a hard time finding the #4 polyester waxed line. Thanks for the idea I've been wearing this thing everywhere and no one knows I have it on.

  • Glad to hear you got your NRGS, its a great knife.

The line is something I buy here in Brazil in shoe repair and saddle maker shops. A few rolls last a lifetime.

  • what kinda tubes do you store the cotton in?

  • They're just straws with the ends melted shut. Sometimes I fold them over and tape.

  • Thanks for the great Ideas. Your video helped me decide to get the becker necker over the Izula because of the sheath design (square vs triangular). I put my kit together and love it. Thanks again.

  • the bicycle tire tube is a smart idea, thanks

  • u should brade your paracord neclace so u have more to work with

  • Also, I really like this kit, and the video. Thanks!

  • the LED will not be broken.

  • You're probably right. I didn't like the way the bare bulb poked out and was exposed

I have since switched the Photon for an Inova that gives me a one touch on-off switch that also has high beam, low beam, and blink features. I like that the new light stays on hands free. The blink feature makes a really good night signal.

  • That's a great kit. Ever think about adding a couple fish hooks? You could always bloodknot the inner paracord strands into at least 20ft of line.

  • The place I had been using this kit primarily over the past few years was in Brazil at higher altitudes where there are no fish. I have fishing gear in my other kits. I see this kit as resolving shorter term problems, turned around on a dayhike, out past dark, maybe spend the night.

  • I see, thanks for the video. It's very thorough and well done.

  • Hey man great video and i love ur kit. Just a little info iv tested several flint rods and the scout one you have i have broken twice and have only bin able to start one fire with. If it is your last resort i guess its fine but there are way better fire steels.

  • I've been using those little BSA Hotsparks for years and never had a problem with them. They are small and sometimes have trouble lighting natural materials but I've never broken one.

  • Well mybe u just have more luck with them than me i guess i just like the bigger ones better. thanks again for the video

  • 6:16 - "No problem for the sheeple."

    Exactly.

I constantly get asked why I carry a knife into the woods with me. Even if it's a little RAT IZULA.

    O.o

  • You should sell these

  • great kit. thanks for the ideas

  • Great video. Any chance you can tell me how you tied the cordage?
