I didn't see Bill Nighy's character as being the least bit of a dirty old man. As for the anti-American theme? I think that this was more anti-bureaucricy than anti-American. This is one of my favorite movies of all time...perhaps because I lived in Iceland for four years....and did business in Reykjavik for three years after that...
