  • Hahaha wow... Gedda may look like a goofy old man, but still has legato, consistent support and an easy bright sound that today's tenors could take a lesson from.

  • ALL OF 'EM VS CORELLI ON HIS PRIME,

CORELLI IS GONNA KICK THEIR AZZZZZZ !!!!!!!

  • bizzarre ending for a corelli tribute, leaving him staring at a page of notes...

  • RIP Franco..

  • Franco is so sweet ! One can tell by his humble demeanor ! I love him !!!

  • did they change the words? why are they looking so closely at the paper? it's a super famous song for these people.

  • Dear piasecznik ---Thank you for taking the time to clarify.

  • Who is the singer to Gedda's righr? He looks familkiar, but I can"t place him.TY if u know.

  • @MsRuthes That's Miroslav Dvorsky. To his left is Peter Seiffert.

  • Vaya desastre! jajajaja

  • Nice. Thanks.

  • Gedda is 72 years old in this clip. For an operatic tenor that is quite an achievment to gain the technique to have this control at that age. Not for everyone!

  • So sorely missed!!!

  • "Opcel1" thousands of thanks for this important video, is an important document for us fans of the Grand Master Franco Corelli also very exciting for this tribute to the greatest tenor of the 20th century and the date is not exceeded, even equaled. all interpretations are very beautiful, wonderful, great actor also in operas, sober and elegant at the concerts, just like you could do it, add to it's magnificent and manly picture.

  • EL GRAN MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI. Feel many emotions IMPORTANT FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE E, a quite deserves all the homage, which SHOULD RECEIVE RECEIVED AND FOREVER for its beautiful and powerful voice, APPLIED WITH EXPERTISE IN THEIR INTERPRETATIONS. Her beautiful and powerful high notes perfect, just like making the perfect diminuendos and beautiful, never a false note, nor the voice shivers also great actor in the operas. Simple and elegant at the concerts.

  • Gedda and Corelli... all the others simply "singers"... and the conductor is terrible too...

  • Wow, hadn't seen Gedda in a long time. Great to hear him and see the others, especially the great Corelli. I read somewhere that Gedda sang in more languages than any other tenor, so his repertoire was quite large.

  • Che tristezza!!!!!!!! Povero grande, immenso Corelli......

  • Yes.. I love and respect so much too, Maestro Corelli and Gedda... but the ohters.........hm......

  • There are musicians and there are singers... Some great voices, but oh dear!

  • Wow, singing in german. Amazing.

  • Soo lovely graceful and moving this upload! THx opcel1!

  • emouvant

  • I met Corelli in his house because I studied sing with him in 1992 for some months, fantastic experience! He was a special person I remember him very humble an he was very kind with me. I have many audio recording of our lessons and also an old unpublished recording where he studied Ernani himself with piano (very intresting!) Corelli is the best tenor and a very notable person! I thank heartily him!!!

  • wow, would you share these recordings ?

  • oh, these are only audio recordings and very long where Corelli speak in italian.. I must cut and take highlits of trese recording.. but I have also a private recording where Corelli study at home playing the piano himself an singing Ernani, very intresting! maybe I'd can share part of this recording..

  • Yes please....

  • Jose Cura the Clown as always.

  • Yes well said Kiwihans and i Might add tucker to the mix! powerful and emotional.

  • Franco Corelli never sang in German so I don't know why anyone expected him to do so. Now, if this was one of the wonderful Italian arias, he wuld have shown the rest of them how it's done. He was a genius!

  • A very wise old man once said, "God

does not give everything to one person!"

    There is no "best"...only personal

    preference. Viva la difference!!

  • tusepagliacco - agree with the Cura comment, however as i understand it, operatic tenors with impecable musicianship are very hard to come across and i think this has helped him to get where he is today.

  • Maestro Corelli was quite old here... and sick too, I guess... is a pity to see a wonderful singer like he was in a stage... just moving the mouth... :(

Anyway, is funny to see the Tenors singing all of them with different tempo... Nicolai Gedda sings great!! Young voice for his age!!

  • why all the bickering? Who can truly say which tenor is 'better' than another! Caruso had great power and control, Gigli had amazing quality of tone , Franco Corelli was dynamic and emotional, Richard Tauber could sing Motzart to Gershwin..we could go on .They had their own wonderful style and appeal to us as individuals. Dont argue about music it one of the great means of uniting us as humans. Just enjoy the music! Peter (music therapist)

  • I agree whole heartedly. Very wise comment!

  • I love Corelli immensely, but it was also great to see Gedda, who is equally wonderful in his own right.

  • das ist lächerlich!

  • Allerdings! Eine peinliche Veranstaltung...

  • Jose Cura sucks. I really don't know how he became successful.

  • maybe that's why?

  • WHERES PAVAROTTI, DOMINGO

  • Video molto interessante ! W Corelli !

  • What the fuck is Jose Cura doing there??

He should be polishing Corelli's shoes, not honoring him.

  • Thanks manrico. Corelli desreved more respect than was shown in this clip. A lot

of singers weren't worthy of standing on the same stage as the GREAT Franco

Corelli. He will live forever in our hearts.

    Bravo to you manrico!

  • is he still alive???

  • No he is not.But his voice will live forever.

  • perhaps the greatest tenor of the 20th century is on that stage, but his brief exposure in this lyric operetta piece is misleading. Maestro Gedda's slide up to the A at the end is true tribute to Franco , the king of the slide; i can't find the italian term for that vocal malfeasance.

  • portamento

  • Thanks you gdawg - yes- portamento- I had the pleasure of seeing Franco at the met in the early 70's as Don Carlo, Rhadames, with Gilda Cruz Romo- Werther with Christa Ludwig- very exciting performer and a great Tenor , but not a linguist and not true to composers as written- his finale duet in Chenier with Tebaldi is electrifying-

  • I agree, what is Cura doing among good singers? maybe it's because at that time he could produce notes. he is unfortunately singing still a lot here in Vienna, and contaminating many operas. It is a long time I can't go to Tosca as he is in the cast constantly! I would feel pity for him if he wouldn't be so arrogant...

  • I think I can hear corelli on the last note of this song, one ofthe darker voices coming through the mix, don't you agree?

    Maybe I'm wrong.

  • Bravo Franco Corelli!!! Bravo Nicolai Gedda!!! but jose cura... aff...

  • Thus kind of videos is for what youtube was made. GREAT!

  • I think the reason corelli's mouth shape is different is because he was lip singing in italian.

  • Agreed.

  • I think they chose to sing german because of the lyric and it's done in Vienna.

  • At least Vienna did something for him! Vergogna La Scala!

  • Yes, I agree completely.

  • D'accord. C'est un commentaire tres juste.

  • Merci Minnie!!!

  • ¡¡¡BARVOS POR SIEMPRE MAESTROS FRANCO CORELLI Y NICOLAI GEDDA!!! Es Hermoso verlos Juntos!!!

  • Commovente documento del nostro amato tenore,

cantata in suo onore, questa bella canzone

    viennese. Grazie .Walter.

  • Whomever organized this sure does not know how to pay tribute to someone like Franco. He put him in a stupid position.

Why not a soft, no HIGH notes ITALIAN canzone. Why German?, Why so many tenors. By the way they all sounded HORRIBLE together. This song, is a standard in repertoire, that none of these tenors have to read, it's embarrasing.

Just, Gedda, who was about 73, I can excuse, no problem.

Could they not make MORE COPIES OF THE WORDS!!!

Why is Jose Cura not giving his to FRANCO!!!

  • I agree that it was badly organized. Why him in a stupid position? They are the ones who look stupid. First, they sing very badly. Second, they don't know the song.

But it was good to do something as different as possible from the Italian rep, so no one would compare them with Franco! If they had had any sense, they should have sung only things that Franco never sang, and in a different style, like German. Although their inferior (to Franco's) technique would have been obvious in any rep!

  • The only thing that I don't understand? why they didn't sing a famous ITLIAN song, in what Corelli could go with them. It would be much more difficoult him to refuse it! But it is also great to see Corelli on stage without hearing him.

  • This is VIENNA of all places: the land of wonderful orchestras, only having a handful of serious rivals on this earth. But here they have to do it with this shrill Europa Orchestra, or whatever! If they could not get the Vienna Philharmonic, they could have done it with the Staatsoper orchestra, or even the Volksoper orchestra, which is not the best, but still sounds impressively beautiful. Or even so-called "lesser" ones, which perform in museums, any of them would have been better than this!

  • Where exactly in Vienna was this, what theater or concert hall? Also, do you know the exact date?

  • The date of the concert was December 18, 1997.

The location was the Austria Center in Vienna. I believe this is more of a convention center than concert hall.

  • Thank you. I had to look it up on the map. It's out of the way, pretty far from the center! I have traveled to Vienna many times, but I never even knew this place existed. VIENNA was running out of concert halls!!!... I can imagine the "acoustics" in this congress hall! They must have used mikes! I wonder whose bright idea it was, instead of doing it at the Staatsoper, where Corelli had sung many times! I hope they stayed away from Franco's rep, poor devils!

  • Unfortunately, they were not that wise and ventured full force into Corelli's rep. Peter Seiffert: Flower Song from "Carmen". The rest of the evening was devoted to Lehar and operetta and they joined forces for the finale as is shown here. If you want any posted let me know. I warn you the performances are uneven.

  • Thanks no. NO, not for me, I am NOT interested in any of those guys signing, much less so Franco's rep. If other users want them, fine. But don't bother for me!

How come they did not die of heart attacks caused by stage fright? I suppose some people are "fortunate" not to realize what they are up against!

  • Minnie, will you just allow them to honor Corelli without overly criticizing their efforts? It is the thought that counts!! My God, I wish you some happiness in your life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for your kind wishes. But you bet I am unhappy when I see the decadence in art in today's world exemplified by such performances.

  • CORELLI!What a voice,and what a great singing history.

A unique timbre known to millions.

  • What can I say?

i'm crying...with all my love...with all the inmense love i ever feel for him..for his unbelievable art..and beauty....Master..how I miss you!!!!

    ankhsnammon

  • Thank you for this video.

  • I don't agree with you. I like Corelli, but here you don't see anything of his singing and his technique. The reason he is opening his mouth differently from others is probably because he didn't know the text and was opening the mouth randomly (especially as you yourself said that he never sang in German).

  • Sorry, but I don't understand what you wanted to say. That they should all only open their mouths and not singing? Why should they do it?

  • That beautiful! It's good to see greats musicians together. And Franco Corelli, he was wonderful.

    Thanks to share it.
