Depending on the lamp presure and weave of the mantle if you try and light a lantern without preburning the mantle the presure and shock might make the rupture. If you get a hole in your mantle you a small jet of flame will liely burn and crack the globe so its beter to preburn and slowly light up with the new mantle so it will mantle expand properly and give you the best light.
New modern mantles are Thorium free. The don't take the abuse of the old,last as long or provide as much light
just turn the fuel on then burn the mantles

BTW; did you clean it at all? If you have some Mr.Clean magic erasers use them.
