  • @dayse if you think you're so much better - im not saying you are'nt, i just dont know you - then make a youtube video of you doing improvisation. ive been playing piano for 10 years (im 14) and cant do improv like that. ill subscribe ps. you kinda are talking out of your ass.

  • @XxXTueurDuGarconsXxX Improvisation is a gift, ither you have it or not, and if you have it you can develop it, developing it depends more on you influences, genres you listen to and pieces you played. So you've been playing for 10 years and you can't improvise ==> You don't have that gift,so just focus on playing and that's it. To improvise is to compose instantly, big composers like Beethoven and Chopin, when composing, they start with something improvised then they develop it and arrange it.

  • Beautiful and Amazing :)

  • AMAZING!!

  • she looks like shes in college

  • Pretty good, but check out Jordan Rudess from Dream Theatre

  • It's practically the same song she did on Oprah. It's not real improv. She's like a "freestyle" rapper who spits written lyrics. Don't get me wrong, she's a good pianist, but to deceive people into thinking that she's creating this as she goes along is thoroughly unscrupulous.

  • Gotta love the key of C ;)

  • @PianoChick36 haha yeah key C is the best

  • This one is great but the one she did on Oprah was amazing!! Unfortunately, it's been taken down. Maybe now that the Oprah show has ended, it will be allowed to be re-posted.

  • @jamaelrabba fuck off.. are you perfect then?

  • This is great, but i'd rather hear the Oprah one.

  • When she started to play I knew she was an angel because I felt her in my heart.

  • Great, but it's almost the same pattern she made for Oprah...

  • all i can say is wow!

  • I wanna see the one she did on Oprah but Youtube took it down :[

  • "I would like to try something I call 'Improvisation,"' Hey! That's what I call it to! Wow small world.

  • At such a young age she is very talented especially having to do it in front of millions of people live. My wife can improvise also (there's a video of her improvising on our channel), and I can definitely spot that the styles are different between Jennifer Lin and Julie Huang.

  • I wish I could find the Oprah performance; I loved that. She may be inserting the notes into formulas to some extent, but the result still sound great.

  • @Fuliginosus Just type in piano improv, and the title will be "piano improv." Yeah I had the same trouble, I actually found it by accident... cuz it doesnt say, "Oprah improv bla bla" lol! Hope you find it

  • @JUSTINMILL3R Got it---thanks!

  • eh...it's some what the same as her next performance

  • dang,and i thought i was good at improvising,she's amazing!!

  • D and F...too familiar!

  • I must say, I love this piece but it is a bit misleading. It's the EXACT SAME MELODY that she played on Oprah when she did this "Improvise".

    Check it here youtube.com/watch?v=M0QTZFUrG3Q

Changing the notes or chord, doesn't make it a new song.

But it is pretty, I liked the one on Oprah better.

  • @efh7557 if you think it's the same melody you need to get your ears checked... What this girl does may not be exceptional, espacially among older professional pianists... but you can't deny she's great!! God stop being jealous or publish something as good as this!!

  • she uses an F! lol. how is that fair?

  • This ia a great piano improvisation. She definitely has a great sense of technical skills. People on here are just hating on someone with an exceptional talent. To be able to improvise like that is amazing.

  • glad all u rocket scientists no so much about piano lol

  • she was 14 then fools what did you do when you were 14?

  • i don't get this rule of her. she doesn't play only the notes chosen. anyone explain to me?

  • @leekaiwei she said she would use the notes chosen in the melody not necessarily the rhythm of the song. that's why it's not just the notes she said.

  • @uberdethkil i didn't say anything about the rhythm. what?

  • @leekaiwei you asked why she didn't use only the note she specified. In the video, she said that she write a melody using those notes. The Melody and rhythm of a song are different entities. She did what she said she was going to do by using those notes in the melody, but to give it that full bodied sound that it has, she used other chords in the same key that she was playing in to make it sound better.

  • @uberdethkil hmm...i'm still slightly confused. then what is the point of saying anything at all if she is to incorporate other notes? i don't mind her using chords which are different to the notes she chosen. i'm not picky about her rhythm. i am just confused about her melody since it contains other notes than the ones chosen.

  • 3:28 ~ 3:31 a little tempo mistake

  • Is it me, or do all of her improvs have EXACTLY the same tempo and style? And pretty much the same chord progressions? And the same phrasing? They 're barely improvisations at all...

  • "I am commenting on this video to say that I have been playing piano for _____ years and this girl is not that good. She has no paschun and it is obvious she should have done ____ and _____ to make it five hundred times better, like I would have done! I could post videos and/or say something relevant, I just choose not to, it has nothing to do with the fact I'm just talking out of my ass."

  • @dayse Learn how to spell before you trash someone.

  • all of her improvs have the same melody. she only switches some of the keys

  • @tiger10puss That is what STYLE is

  • I wish that were a real song

  • @Chazzputtiv123 I really do too!!! I have the video clip saved on my ipod. Though, I like the one she did on Oprah's better. It is the EXACT same song, just a different chord.

  • I wish that were a real song

  • my gosh she looks dam old ><

  • yall just jealous.. haters

  • IS THAT GOLDY HAWN?

    OMGGGGGG

    SHES SOOO LUCKY

  • Not to diss on her or anything, but the C major scale is easy to improvise with. It gets tricky when you have to use sharps and flats. If you were to do that, you would have a hell of a time with improv. But this is still good because she is doing it without mistakes. 5/5

  • @heartachingpain How are you telling her it is easy to improvise with when your 2 year work does not sound anywhere close to as good as her on the spot improv? Maybe musically speaking it is not the most difficult key to improv or compose in but technically and mentally....most definitely....improv is far from easy...even with somewhat forumulaic improv....but hers is not formulaic the pattern she uses helps her to develop each bar.

  • @xHuntedGunzPCGx ummm.....that was my first song...i have gotten a lot better since then. If you really wanna see something i'll post it up on youtube...as soon as i get a camera with recording capabilities....

  • another example of woman fail.

  • Wow you're amazing. I wish I could play as well as you. I suck.

  • awesome!!!

  • This is how I play. I can't think about playing, though; I have to just let the conduit between my subconscious, where my ability to play is, and my fingers remain open without letting thought interfere. It's more a case of feeling where the notes are taking you than where you are taking the notes. I'd be willing to bet that she's really not thinking much about what she's doing, but just allowing it to happen. Just a very powerful hunch.

  • K not only is she an unbelievably brilliant artist but she's also the sweetest girl in the world. This is just beyond impressive.

  • she's 14? wow she's so mature. at that age i couldn't even bow properly at my piano recitals loll

  • this chick is amazing at improv

  • you guys are just jealous, she's awesome

  • normalement c do sol ré la mi et elle a fait do sol la mi ré bisarrre !!

  • Well, she did use flats and sharps. Though didn't shift from the C scale to another (Eb which should've been common).

  • amazing

  • Why doesn't she have any sharps or flats. Everytime she improvs it is in the key of C. She not good enough to be so confident. She is just coming off like she thinks she is a genius

  • your all just hating because you didn't get notice for playing the piano lol... same goes to every little fucker that said the same thing like you Surfwtw. don't matter if you play in an easy key or scale, as long as it's good. fool isn't that what improvise all about, is pulling shit our your ass at random. im sure you at her age can't even do that so don't talk shit. took you more years to get to her level.

  • Comment removed

  • (I don't care what other people think of my following comment, but:) I totaly agree with you Surfwtw!

  • She did use sharps and flats. Most of the song is in C major, but there are bits in between with the black keys. I'd like to see you improvise something better.

  • I am not trying to be competative but before you say "I'd like to see you improvise something better" Check the videos of the person you are talking to. I have videos up, I am a pianist and I can improvise. I don't actually have some of my better work up on Youtube yet but what she has up is not as impressive as I thought it was going to be with all the hype. There are pianist all over the worl who are not on Opera who could easily do this. It isn't bad, just not good enough for the hype.

  • She is very good for her age. She was only 14 when she did this, and I don't think many people can do that. Do I sense jealousy because she's getting all this attention?

  • I didn't know she was 14, she looks like she is 25. There is no jealousy, I really don't care, I am just a musician who was watching videos and I made a comment because I didn't understand why people were so amazed by this. That is all. I am not downing her or trying to comete with her. For people who don't play the piano they may be impressed with this. For people who do, I am sure most really are not impressed. People are acting like this is a miracle and it just isn't. Just my opinion.

  • You got it just right, she is very good, but not a prodigy. The show comes off a little arrogant for the music that is produced. Im not talking about skill, I am talking about the feeling involved. What she is playing lacks the technique of a prodigy and the melody and progression is boring. Elton John is not a technical pianist but I would be more impressed with his chord structure and melodies (as simple as they are) than I would with what she plays. This is my opinion.

  • truely talented amazing never heard anything like it and i listen to alot of piano

  • For those who are not familiar with her, she is a JOC student of Yamaha. Only talented kids got chosen to be part of this group. Her improvisation skill is really way below typical JOC kids whom I had heard over the last 31 years. Normal people can do what she did. It was totally just a memorization of chord progression. That is why her improvisation always sounds similar, the one here and the one in Oprah.

  • Yeah, I noticed that her improvisation in this video was very similar to the on she did one Oprah, but still, I think she's great.

  • im sure she used similar patterns, especially in the left hand however she still has to think about filling out the chords that is improv, is it not? And changing keys as she did towards the end.

  • This song she claims is "improv" sounds incredibly similar to her "improv" song on the Oprah Winfrey Show that Oprah called "a miracle". Not knocking her talent - just questioning her legitimacy when it comes to improvising. Check out her appearance on Oprah and see for yourself. They are not the same song, but there are parts of the two songs that are identical.

  • Some people are concentrating on the gimmick in her act, when she's still a fantastic pianist. Ignore the show business. She did compose that nice piece, even if earlier, and she's still a prodigy.

  • Sure she's a good pianist. But if she truly is a prodigy then every pianist is a prodigy. This isn't special. I sound jealous, but I really have nothing to be jealous of. It sounds nice though.

  • how old is she?

  • she needs more cards, some with flats and some with sharps. >:D jk.

  • @chocobosROK

Well to be honust, that would impress me more, 'cuz to improvise over C Major isnt hard at all when u dont use flats, plus the thing is that she uses the actually C,G,B,A,E is only 20% of the song, rest is side-themes that is just picked out of HER head, like when some1 is asking a question u answer it partly, and then u run into a side-track and shows some skillz that hasnt anything with the question to do in the first place!

  • @chocobosROK before the jk i had this gay nerd rage like BITCH YOU KNOW SHE TALENTED YOU SO JELLY then i was like oh wait there is a jk

  • @ninja122334

haha. Now that I'm watching this again. I really wish I could perform something on the spot. That's just pure musical gift.

  • She is 14 years old, and already a great concert pianist.

And, she does improvise that quite well. The patterns are later weaved. It is probably true she used some patterns she knows, but nonetheless, she has to come up with the rhythm to fit that, and decide what chord progressions to play, and when to rise and fall. She's well versed in music theory. For a 25 year old musician, this would be impressive. For a 14 years old, it's almost unbelievable.

  • SHE IS 14 YEARS OLD OMG she loks much older BUT SHE PLAYS GREAT !!!

  • Another Ted fill-in. There is a 6 year old girl that writes beautiful musical pieces in 5 minutes and she has written 140 of them. Yeah, Lin she is talented, but not even close to Ted worthy. Losing respect for the "Ted" speakers unfortunately. Ted isn't even close to the "A" list now.

  • couldnt care less about this. this one sounds exactly like the one she did on oprah. i would be impressed if she had people pick different the FIVE cards every time, and also pick the time signature. she plays the same time signature and always 5 notes. thats easy to make a song out of with the same basic outline every time. like i said, id be really impressed with random time signatures. PLUS random notes.

  • i agree, frankly

  • SHE MEMORIZES A SPECIFIC PATTERN PEOPLE. cmon

  • this sounds almost exactly like the one she played on oprah

  • You want to see some serious improve... look up Eldar Djangirov in the youtube search, if you think his soloing is already thought out, all you have to do is check out 2 different videos of him playing the same tune and you can tell there's nothing the same except for the progression... He even changes that up each tune... he's not the only one either, there are plenty out there that can truly improvise... this is just a clever gimick to impress the novices.

  • A moment to think!?! I'm calling bullshit! What would she do with a jazz or blues piece when they have her solo with 1 bar notice mid-song? Don't get me wrong, it's a nice little piece... The song is written as you can see by her other videos, she just plays with the melody (in whatever order is chosen)... She's in C (the easiest key in the world) and all the white notes are in that key... Just play the white keys in any order with the progression and you're good. No "thinking" needed.

  • I can improvise too, and I'm 15. I mean, she shouldn't make it such a big deal, you see? It's just not right. But the result it cute anyway :D

  • cool improvisation

  • Something I find unfortunately a little scammy about this video is that she's using a really similar right-hand in the Oprah performance.

Also, even if she wasn't using the exact same accompaniment for each song, this is still fairly easy compared to the regular challenge of jazz musicians to improvise to a certain set of "changes", or chord progressions on the spot. In the case of jazz pianists, they have to improvise the solo and the accompaniment at the same time based on the progression.

  • her left hand chords are very, very similar to the ones in the Oprah one...descending notes in the bassline, same/similar broken chords...but i guess thats her style? =D

  • She uses the same exact chord progression in each of her "improves." not hard at all... Good gimick though for those who don't know better.

  • She is good but this is not at all prodigious. I couldn't improvise any better but I know of people who can. For example there is a channel on youtube called Kylelandry. Now he is more of a prodigy. His improvisations are incredible.

  • 100% agreed.

  • Is it just me or does 2:43 remind you of Pokemon.

  • The whole thing reminds me of Final Fantasy!

  • @Yeungster23 O_O Exactly my thoughts.

  • In inspiration of this idea of using cards to randomly determine pitches to use as a basis for a piano improvisation, I did a couple videos of my own like that as well and posted it in my channel =)

  • Oh, this is great! I like to make rules like this when making an improv on piano as well..rules can be such a great inspiration for interesting new improvisational explorations. =)

  • well im not getting mine ready to play in front of national tv otherwise it would be more polished. :) why would you call me a spammer?? stupid. the stuff you hear on my page im just making up out of my head.

She is just using simple tricks in composition to make it sound good. nothing really original at all :)

  • Good for you

  • hahaha this is everyway better than yours so please shut up, u r just jelaous spammer.

  • Hmm you know, I think most blues and jazz musicians would be inclined to disagree with you. This is fairly easy compared to the degree of focused improvisation (based on chord changes) that's expected out of jazz musicians.

  • Loser primadonnas. Her talent is amazing and the piece is amazing. Appreciate it for what it is and keep your criticisms to yourself. Didn't your mothers ever tell you that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?

  • I agree with what you all are saying about how her style is rather narrow when compared with the genius composers we associate with chamber music, but you have to consider this: This girl was improvising this all on the spot. The music isn't comparable to the Greats. But coming up with a melody isn't the same as writing a symphony, and you have to proportion difficulty with time spent. Therefore, this simple piano melody is still impressive when contrasted with Bach or something of the like.

  • ehhh

    not really a prodigy

    a prodigy is like mozart

mozart composed sonatas, symphonies, concertos before he was 13

he also wrote a few operas.

    thats a prodigy

there's many musicians in the world who could do this

  • make no mistake that was really enjoyable. But come on, that was not by any means "prodigious". in fact comparing this vid with the opera one can easily tell she's got a really narrow style. It always begins with both hands playing the same thing. and then there's that rolling chord thing she does over and over again with her left hand. Come on that was nice but nothing worth shouting over :(

  • i agree

  • well improvisation does require a lot of creativity, so by using the same repetitive techniques, its easier to create a song

  • she did this on oprah

  • awesome

  • OMG!!! THATS GREAT!

  • HOLLY moles!

  • I heard her do this gimmick on an Oprah youtube clip and she used the same techniques and progressions. Listen to the greats: Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Keith Jarrett, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Brad Mehldau... real composers, real improvisors.. none of this sissy commercial bs..

  • Good, but if she wanted a real challenge she could have picked 5 from 12! "What about these (D and F)?" "I won't use them", eh, hardly!

  • is that goldie hawn? lol

  • yeah that is her. =)

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know what happened, during her improve i started to cry, something just so emotional about how beautiful the melody was, the fact one human can create something so beautiful from random notes, it really hit me hard lol.

  • i agree. it was nice.

  • she took the 5 notes and stretched them to more then 20 by adding Flats minor 7th major 7th, so the 5 notes C G B A E she could Flat, minor, diminish, major 7th, augment or suspend each note. so she turned 5 major notes into more then 20. i loved it. she is very good well trained. improv was pretty good.

  • this is essentially the same music she played on oprah's show. same sort of intro and very similar chordal progressions. sure the melody is slightly different (actually the one on oprah was better), but it's all diatonic, so with some knowledge of music theory, this is fairly straightforward to pull off. i'm not saying she isn't talented. all i'm saying is that this is very elementary improvisation. if she improvised a fugue or csardas (see victor borge) now that would be cool.

  • i agree with your post. i been a musician & entertainer for many many years. its not that hard but she is very good.

  • Ok I have been playing piano since i was in 2nd grade, and still being a teenager, i have to say I didn't find this difficult sounding. she had the right hand notes picked out for her, and she then played the corresponding left hand broken triads. I only listened to like the beginning of the song though, so tell me if it got any more difficult by the end. otherwise i will be dissapointed that anybody at all thinks this girl is amazing...

  • If you have been playing since second grade where is your piano vid?

  • why would I need to post a video of me playing? Do I seriously need to PROVE my skill level? all I did was point out simple piano "facts".

Somebody literally gave her the right hand notes, and she then played the corresponding left hand broken triad chords. You don't need to be a music major to figure out this is crap.

  • It's alot easier to be a critic when sitting on the sideline...

  • did I not just explain myself? Give me a good reason why this is "improv." I will commend her on the fact that this is done under extreme pressure. However, being a musician, she should enjoy the feeling of performing for others, so I'm still not impressed.

  • Well maybe the fact that you aren't impressed doesn't mean she isn't amazing at what she does. So your comment about being disappointed if anyone finds her amazing was unnecessary. If you were such the talent you would have a video as well. Oh and anything you haven't prepared for and do is improv.

  • I still disagree with your "need" for me to post a video. I have a life and it doesn' t revolve around what you think is necessary. However I might try posting a vid now that you suggest it. I'll let you know when its up. That is if I decide to do it.

although I'm still completely unimpressed, you put out a good argument, and I respect you for that. I'm not a stubborn person, and I can admit when I'm wrong, so here it is- this isn't complete crap, and she does have more talent than most people.

  • i have been a pro musician comedian entertainer for years. i followed her chord changes & although for US musicians we all can improv but at what degree. she is good. she took the C to E minor rather then E and the A to A minor. also C can be changed to Cmaj 7th which was giving her improv more color. since there are only 7 notes(ABCDEFG) should be easy for a PRO musician to do this. but she used 5 but you can take the 5 notes and make them Flat, sharp, 7th maj 7th minor 7th. but she is great.

  • She is brilliant, enough said.

  • because then it is almost a given that the chord will clash, you cant just have some random sharps and flats and actually make it in a whole song, accidentals only work sparingly. This way she has a key to work in.

  • this is good but im wondering why she didn't put in the 5 accidentals to make it 12 cards?

  • its not the same song. she uses the same technique you could say.

but the notes picked were different so she couldnt play the same song. she just plays broken chords with her left hand in a different key tone but the same way thats what makes it sound the same

  • no its not the same as on the oprah show. the notes are completely different. the key changes are different.

  • Actually the chord changes are identical, at least in the main theme, which is mostly why it sounds so similar (incidentally, they are also pretty much the changes from canon in D... except in C). That, and she has some similar motifs that she uses to resolve back to the tonic. It might not even be intentional; that chord pattern is so sticky that it's hard to get away from once you get into it.

  • Jennifer was only 14 years old when she performed here

  • it is you idiot

  • that woman looks like goldie hawn

  • okay im an idiot it says it in the into

  • well she doesn't really did the whole number of things you can do with a melody when making like this improvised variations.. I think she has the talent to do that anyway!

  • If I had half the talent of this woman I would be happy. Seriously. Amazing.

  • LOL she ten times better than my friend... RIGHT MICHAEL?!?!?!?!

  • She does the same thing everytimee though, and always start with (C G C G E G)

  • And all of the songs are in C...with a few accidentals here and there...

  • Actually she's been playing since she was 4. She came to my school today and played three songs for the choir and orchestra class.

  • are there flats and sharps in the selection too? I guess not: this makes everything basicly 'in tone' somewhat...

improvising balladstyle is pretty straightforward without flats and sharps...

  • There were some accidentals.

  • i thought she was 30. pft.

  • it's fucking boring, always same arpèg. ZzZzZz

  • does she have a website?

  • OMG haters just shut up and accept the fact that she's awesome. XD

  • she's 19 now not 16, hahaha =]

  • that was beautiful....and yes she's probably not the only one out there who can improv so well, but honestly stop criticizing. she's what, 16? She has amazing technique and ability and it was a beautiful melody. Don't expect her to go up there and bang out a concerto or something jeez she is AMAZING and just accept it

  • Not a single of the negative posters here can probably even read a note.

I've played the piano both classical and flat fingered for 23 years, seriously know my stuff musically, and can say that this girl wows me at 16.

Ignorance will say that she's doing the same thing as she 'did on oprah', but improv actually has some form and function. This is her style of play and it suits her and her talent to a tee.

Absolutely phenomenal. I would love to have her passion for playing again.

  • Thats a lie, IS NOT a commom thing inprovise in c in Jennifer´s way. The common thing is to use the scales, but has to be done without mistakes and with taste.

  • I don't understand why some people have to be so hard on her. I mean, come on, you cannot deny she surely wows you. Give her a break. She's truly talented after all.

  • ah, too much conflict here. i'd just like to say that she is broadcasted and has gained an audience because she has incredible musical talent (you can't disagree to that). the mere fact that she can compose is good enough for at least some appreciation, don't you think? it doesn't matter whether she uses the same progression with most of her improvs or not, 'cause the results are all amazing pieces of music, which is what composing is! my goodness, people, we need to open up our minds!

  • i agree 1000% with frostythesnowman! i'm a magician and i'm totally blown away by her gift. i wish her much success because she can hear what many have tuned out.

  • You know what, I bet half of you people couldnt improv or even play half as good as she does at age "14" yea thats what i thought! ;) HA

  • IMPROVING IN C IS HARD DUH

  • I would like to see you try. If someone can play an improv like i
