I hadn't realised this version existed - it's got a less produced feel to it that the Osmonds' version and I think I prefer it, but either way it's a good song.
Also i prefere The Osmonds version. I got to learn to know that song by The Osmonds. It is a complete different version. It's like With a little help from my friends by The Beatles and the version of Joe Cocker. Both great but what a difference.
Back in '68, in the eighth grade graduation school book, I wrote Favorite song: The Proud One! I listened to this song for weeks and sang along with Frankie as I had a High Voice (choir)!. I thought the Background voices were the Best!
I remember hearing the Osmonds version when it came out in 1975. I was glad that this beautiful song had its chance to chart here in the UK, as the Osmonds were very popular here in the 70s. As a cover version I dont think it is too bad, I am just glad we have the chance to hear the original here. I think it is the best version, it does take me back to my early teen years, I loved the Four Seasons.
Thanks so much for sharing this, I always loved this song, it was not a big hit in the UK. I listen to an oldies station here in the UK called Gold, I think you can get it on the internet, and the listeners always ask for the Osmonds version, I dont know if they realise this version was the first one. Shall we say I am a little disappointed when the Osmonds one is played....
@janettwinkle Although I like the Osmonds version, this is the one I prefer as I was in my formative years when this version came out. I don't know why it didn't chart higher, but chart competition was pretty tough in the mid-60's before the generated playlists came along.
@heine71 Actually, the label credit on the 45 rpm single release was given to Frankie Valli (solo, without credit to the Four Seasons) and it peaked on Billboard's Hot 100 chart at #68.

This is what I refer to as one of Valli's Peaks...the very best of Frankie and the Four Seasons. Why this wasn't a top 10 smash defies explanation.

This would later be covered by the Osmonds in 1975 IThe Osmonds version is better).

Fine underrated gem--just as great as the Osmonds' top 40 remake.

@djdavemick Did the Four Seasons version of "The Proud One" make Billboard's Hot 100 chart?
