I agree :( I'm very gifted, and my school could care less. no gifted programs whatsoever, and at other schools with gifted programs, they just make the work harder, but don't customize it for gifted students.

Did you know that if a learning disabled child is in an 8th grade classroom and can only function on a 4th grade level that they STILL have to take the 8th grade tests and pass them.....it is TRUE! If they don't, according to NCLB, it is the TEACHER'S fault....wake up America!!!!!

We teachers work hard because we love kids and want to see them learn. But we can't do that if we're required to give tests constantly and must teach facts for the tests instead of concepts and critical thinking.

all the national holidays( martin luther king etc) 3 months of summer vacation.

Teachers are overpaid for the small amount of work they do in a year, If the kids are not learning ,maybe they should be in school 12 months of the year! instead of getting all this leisure time.

I agree, for example in Europe or South America, kids go 12 month to school from 8:00am to 3:00pm. They take 12 subject per semester, each semester is 6 months. You can tell the difference btw them. A kid from 2nd grade from S.A is already in multiplications while a kid in USA is still managing the size of his letters. A kid from Europe, at the same age is speaking 3 languajes....is the education in USA good?

Do you really believe this, or are you being facetious? The average number of work days for Americans is 242 days out of the year. My number of days at work last year EXCLUDING the summer and spring break was 245...and many of those were 16 hour days. We spend, on average, two evenings each week chaperoning events and attending meetings, seminars, and conferences.

They have a job where they take their work home - and they are not just a teacher in the classroom - they are a teacher at home and on the street.

Think about it that way.

What we need to do - is identify the best teachers and pay them a hell of lot more to keep them around - as teaching is hard to make money in - from the beggining - yet these teachers can leave and make more in private sec

I'm a teacher and I don't make "lots of dollars", I can guarantee that. I can also tell you that as a teacher, I work very hard. I put in more hours than your average full-time employee. Under NCLB teachers are just following orders. They are doing what they have been told to do in order to keep their jobs. Teaching might not pay very well, but it does pay, and many of us are passionate about it and couldn't imagine doing anything else.

we need higher paid teachers we dont have enough people who are good at it because the pay for a teacher who works at least 7 hour days is nothing you cant make a school better by not funding it thats like trying to get a person to stop starving by takign away the food.

@davidesposito1 How do you propose that they determine that I am a higher performing teacher than others? Here is a cross-section of just one of the classes I had in another state: one girl who was picking up the pieces at home since her dad died one month before the test, a boy from a family that had been visited many times by child/family services who never found the cause of his bruises, and a girl with a baby sister in the hospital. Yep, they have nothing to worry about but the test.

I know teach for america has had a lot of reasearch into what makes the best teachers and it can ussually be seen from their accomplishments in the past.

Also, everytime somebody brings up an issue about how their are exceptions - honestly all data should be looked at in context - context is key in analyzing any educational data.

I see no reason we wont be able to understand more and more of the context understand

NCLB is a disaster, but the answer isn't more funding and more laws. The answer is getting the Federal government out of education. There's a reason that private schools and home schoolers have been growing at a tremendous rate for the last few decades.
